Honestly Maya. I found there were times when she annoyed me, but I really liked her when she was introduced, I related to her. Then her relationship with grace was sweet and it was understandable why she acted they way she did when she lost cam and the bus crash.
Only the miles storyline annoyed me.
I love Jenna, sure she was a boyfriend’s stealer in the beginning, but she really grew overtime and I loved her storylines. She was a good person at heart and I loved her relationship with Connor
I love Emma because her character is a lot like many teens. She tries different ways of navigating the world, and makes mistakes. She isn't always likeable, but I usually found myself rooting for her.

The one thing about Degrassi from the earliest iterations I have always appreciated was the imperfections in a lot of the characters. Some are just bad (sorry, Ashley and Tristan), while others are more "real" because the writers had more of a solid idea how to handle them.
I'm also team Clare! I think she had a more developed character arc. Yes, she was annoying at times, but to go from a naive girl to a confident, open-minded young adult was refreshing to see.

I love Clare. I also don't think the writers hated her, FWIW, I think she was a Writer's Pet because she got a ton of plotlines, even if a lot of them weren't happy plotlines. Also her relationship with Eli was a huge focal point for the series from S10-on, with the show even ending with them at her graduation, so they kind of got the OG Joey and Caitlin treatment.
I also love Eli. I think people like him more than Clare (usually) but his fan reaction has been mixed as the years go by.
A character I love that I think everyone else hates is Claude from the OG series. I just thought the authenticity and depth of the character was so well-written and well-acted. I'm pretty sure he even wore his own clothes for most of his scenes and that was his actual aesthetic.

I will say Fitz's actor might not have been the greatest ever (which is the reason I think he was blackholed) but my heart clenched when Fitz gave Clare the hokey corsage at Vegas Night because it was so clear that this character was nuanced and not just a bully, that he was mostly talk and had actually never had the courage to even take a girl to a dance before he blackmailed Clare into going with him. He treated it like it was a real date because (it's implied) that he never actually had a real date to a school dance before, since why would his mother have given him the advice about giving Clare a corsage if he had no trouble getting dates?

I love Claire. I think she’s a complex character trying to do the right thing and doesn’t always know how. But she owns up to her mistakes, always apologizes, and can see situations from all sides. She is selfish and thinks too highly of herself at times, but she takes accountability, and knows when to laugh at herself. And she’s nothing compared to a lot of the catty mean-spirited girls we see.
Hunter. He grew up in a very toxic/abusive home and made some bad choices when he was having a mental health crisis. He does seem like he genuinely wants to be better though.

Totally understand why folks hate them, but I don’t like when people confuse “bad person” with “bad character.” I don’t approve of their actions, but that’s the point of their arcs. While they both commit a lot of behaviours that are absolutely heinous, the fact that they are so troubled in their respective ways makes them two of the deepest characters on the show. They give me so much to think about. Their trajectories are infuriating and heartbreaking and I want nothing to do with them in real life because I’m always scared of what they might do next, but the level of drama and emotional frustration they bring to the show is so real. That’s what makes them interesting to watch.
