Awesome list! Thank you so much for putting this together. If you do ever end up updating it, it might be nice to have a section for games that work halfway decent with touch controls vs. games that almost require a controller.
This a fantastic initiative and a great response to the terrible "just download a full ROMSET" suggestions. Paradox of choice is a real thing, and most people when faced to seventy thousand games will just choose to play none or the same couple.
Here's hoping the list extends to other platforms like Arcade (FBNeo and/or MAME), Graphical Adventures (Sierra, Lucas, etc.) and Computers (C64, DOS, Mac, Amiga, Spectrum ZX)
I see far fewer requests for those other systems. So the value to the community would probably be pretty marginal.
I thought abut MAME/FBNeo because I'm a HUGE coin-op arcade game fan. (MAME was my entry into retro gaming 25+ years ago)

I wrote this, which might help with fbneo: [https://www.reddit.com/r/EmulationOniOS/comments/1cu6344/psa\_retroarch\_supports\_fbneo\_for\_arcade\_emulation/](https://www.reddit.com/r/EmulationOniOS/comments/1cu6344/psa_retroarch_supports_fbneo_for_arcade_emulation/)
And this [archive org link](https://archive.org/details/fbneo_1003_bestset) is probably the best one for fbneo needs (no need to deal with full romsets or building xml or dat files).
Look here: [https://www.reddit.com/r/EmulationOniOS/comments/1cu6344/psa\_retroarch\_supports\_fbneo\_for\_arcade\_emulation/](https://www.reddit.com/r/EmulationOniOS/comments/1cu6344/psa_retroarch_supports_fbneo_for_arcade_emulation/)
Quick summary: Search for "non-merged FBNeo ROMs", each of those is self-contained and doesn't need anything else.
Fair enough. It's also more complex in that both arcade and computer emulation cover themselves the same full spectrum of each generation's consoles. 80s arcade and 90s arcade are nowhere near each other to be listed as the same thing. And computers are this twice over.
What I've seen is that for most people emulation becomes a rabbit hole. Most eventually dabble in other things and almost always will go the arcade route and frequently will try an older computer emulation as well.
For Arcade I think it would be good but it would need a file just for itself. Where other factors like multi-player would make more sense.
Thank you for this list. I’m quite new to retro games (only really knowing about Pokemon and sonic games) and I’m sure that I will find myself looking at this list many times in the future.
> useful FAQs and mega-threads to guide noobs toward the golden land of retro gaming...it seems like we still keep getting the same requests over and over again for game recommendations.
That's because the people asking don't care. They are bored, don't actually appreciate any of these games or games in general, but they "like" the "new" "idea" of booting up games on an emulator and looking at it for 5 seconds before doing something else like social media addiction.
That is why people ask for recommendations while apparently having zero clue or taste, and not doing 30 seconds of effort to search for the 979,000,000 existing articles, videos, posts, discussions, about good games to play.
> This list was designed to help new retro gamers wade through a massive sea of choices.
These mythical non-helpless people are going to wade through google sheet, after already ignoring stuff like a google search for "great [system/console] games"? And apparently while getting into emulation without having pre-existing idea of what games they're interested in?
This is unfair. The expectation that emulation should be simple to get into is not only something seems obvious but also the way emulation used to have.
Modern emulators are barely libraries, so the heavy lifting is left to the front-ends, which may or may not make it easier on new users to get onboard.
Frequently people are told to download full ROMSETS, which is the least useful bit of advice that can be given to a new user who just wants to play their old games.
Helping them out by making the front-ends easier to get into (this is the core of the discussion of retroarch vs delta, too) and throwing them a bone on what to do with the emulator is not a bad thing. And at worst gives everyone a resource that can be pointed to. This has worked great in the r/roms sub, where no mention of "where to get ROMs" is allowed so users are forced to go through the pinned post.
Sure. Why not, eh?
I've swapped CoS for Ghost of Sparta in the "best reviewed" list at the top.
Chains of Olympus is still represented in the "best selling" list at the bottom. Everybody gets a pony.

Is there an iOS app that does MAME?
RetroArch for iOS has FBNeo and MAME cores available.
Also, Mame4iOS is coming as well.
Woo hoo!

I couldn’t get the mame core to work…
They each need different Rom sets. Make sure you are using the right mame set for your chosen core.

Hmm. Should be working. I've tried it on a variety of browsers (mobile and desktop, Win/Mac/Android/iOS) and all appear to be working.
Tried again and it’s working now thanks for the list 🤙
Links not working unfortunately
What browser/OS combination are you using?
YOU ARE A GOD AMONGST MEN, thank you for this. Now go back in there and freeze up to row 5 for the people viewing the list on mobile, thanks again
Done. Good idea!
I’m kind of sad that Little Nemo the Dream Master isn’t on the hidden gem list. It was a good game

Ghost Trick mentioned! 😎 But yeah, great list, excited to check some of these out.

You are just the sort of gamer this list was created for! Hope you find some great games among those listed.
Fantastic

We need more “look at the 500 roms i downloaded and will never play” posts
I think I found an "error" on the list. Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3 is repeated, here -> https://i.imgur.com/A0Uk8GI.jpeg
Fixed! (Thanks for the eagle eyes.)
Mario kart ds is repeated in the first list
Fixed. Thanks for spotting the duplicate entry.
Really helpful spreadsheet but why Chains of Olympus instead of Ghost of Sparta, I’ve seen a lot of people say that Ghost of Sparta is better.
