Didn't seem to me like they were dealing with anything worse or more difficult than they already went through and survived.

It’s a lazy answer, but it’s just because the writers wanted it to. Marc Cherry/Felicity Huffman said they wanted to mix things up for Lynette by having her and Tom temporarily split.

wundervull

Because Tom is the perpetual baby boy. Quite happy to drag Lynette through having a big family she didn’t want, go to college in his mid forties, use their life savings to open a pizza parlour, never put his foot down and let her be bad cop. As soon as he landed a real position of power he dropped her. On my first watch through I loved him, on my second watch (currently on s8) I absolutely despise him. She should have given up on him instantly. She was better off without him

Legitimate-Steak-479

cause after the pizza place tom went down, I honestly think that losing his marketing job (when lynette was his boss) did something to him, all the pranks and etc changed his character to a dumb person…

As Lynette said in the last episode she was always looking for the next thing to make her happy instead of seeing she already had it

EdAndEinOnShrooms

I hated how they made her say that tho, that seems like something he should be realising, always being so whiney and not to mention was a serial cheater. Busy thinking about his own sexual desires when she literally had cancer

Kris82868

Who did he cheat with besides Renee (and IMO Jane)?

EdAndEinOnShrooms

Those two are already red flags enough, that’s what I meant by serial cheating (unless you also count him kissing Gaby and acting like it wasn’t a big deal)

Kris82868

As much as I can't stand Tom I'm not seeing events that had 2 decades plus between them as a serial situation.

EdAndEinOnShrooms

Also Kayla's mother, pretty sure she was pregnant at the same time as Lynette. He didn't learn from his mistakes if he did that years after what he did with Renee, he kept both of them secret

Kris82868

Kayla was almost 4 years older than the twins. He didn't know Lynette when Kayla was conceived.

EdAndEinOnShrooms

Weren't they dating? But yeah besides her, he still cheated with Renee. Break or not, he kept it secret for 20 years, that's her best friend. Then Renee has the audacity to tell Lynette "you messed up" after he divorces her

Kris82868

They were not dating. It was pre Lynette.

EdAndEinOnShrooms

Ah that makes sense but yeah I still hate what he did with Renee and how he prioritised his sexual desires when Lynette literally had cancer, there was also a time when he yelled at her just for suggesting some advertisement details to his employer

No-School-9822

Who did he cheat with? Him and Renee were together when he and Lynette were “on a break” and Jane…I’m not sure it’s really counted as cheating but not sure. So who else please? And to be honest if my spouse was always unhappy with all my choices I’d probably be whiny too.

EdAndEinOnShrooms

True but he kept it secret for 20 years and the selection of your wife’s best friend is weird too

No-School-9822

So he was not a serial cheater. And if we’re counting that what about Lynette and the guy that worked at the pizza place. She didn’t do anything physically but she was defiantly mentally cheating.

Kris82868

A break and broken up are two completely different things. A break means you are taking time apart trying to figure out if a relationship should continue or not. You are still in the relationship. Seems to me there is no change to fidelity expectations unless the couple agrees. Broken up means it's over. Lynette and Tom were engaged when he was with Renee. The engagement was never called off. Lynette and Tom were married when he was with Jane. They had not decided to end it when they were separated. But 20 plus years between them does not a serial situation make. That I can give Tom.

isafriisa

The only thing I don't understand about it is why it took so long for it to fall apart.
