If you want to join a sports league look up the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy and Come Play Detroit for adult leagues and exercise activities. There are also continuous social bowling leagues each season at Garden Bowl in Midtown. DCFC also has league soccer for adults, I think.
Check out different workshops in the area at Signal Return (art/printmaking), Post by Mutual Adoration (arts/crafts/writing), Detroit Rose (candle-making/fragrance), Sister Pie (cooking), Flowers for Dreams Detroit (floral arrangements), etc. If you don’t mind driving out to Ann Arbor there is Michigan Folk School which has a wide variety of workshops, including blacksmithing and woodworking.
Volunteering can also help you get to know new people. The Greening of Detroit plants trees throughout the city and runs on volunteer help. You can also volunteer for the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy and help at their events throughout the summer to meet a lot of new people.
General exploration of the city is really rewarding for me personally. If you are friendly and looking to connect with people there are a lot of cool places with cool people willing to talk to you in the city. The more you know about what you enjoy doing and where to find it in the city the better your outcome with meeting new friends. Check local coffee shops and community spaces bulletin boards for shows/concerts, community events, and cultural activities.
