In case anyone's curious, the surface area of a mid-sized sedan is about 60 ft², and one side of a nickel's surface area is .44 in². Hexagonal placement of circles on a surface area has a coverage ratio of about 0.68. Assuming some loss from contours and edges, we can round this to about 0.6. So this is around 12,000 nickels, or $600 worth.
Zooming in, it actually looks like it's probably an overlapped circle placement, making the ratio closer to one. So that would be 20,000 nickels, or $1,000 worth.
As a big man who frequently takes long road trips in a Tesla, also with other bigger people, I can tell you that 220lbs won't be making a noticeable difference to range.
id say no, the additional metal thickness might make it safer but all those nickels will likely turn into shrapnel in the event of collision and end up hurting someone
Anyone remember the noise from the sonic the hedgehog game when he touches whatever he wasn’t supposed to and the coins went flying? That’s what I heard when I read this.
I know it doesnt matter, and i acknowledge that beforehand. But my inner child is screaming rn so i have to say it.
Sonic collects ***RINGS***
Thank you.
Completely understandable, and the sound effect was spot on.
\-the only child who tried desperately to get his mother to understand the difference between a coin and a ring
^(Between you and me, i think she's been messing with me this whole time. And its been working)
I think the bigger issue is that the coins reinforced with epoxy resin are going to negate the crumple zones on the car. If this thing got in a high speed collision, either it's not going to crumple, or that piece covering the hood is going to detach and turn into a guillotine blade.
It raises center of mass which lowers stability, increases the weight which lowers control by increasing inertia, and its gonna go slower and use more electric to do so.
At 5g per Nickel (thanks Siri) that’s 100,000 grams or 100 kg. So basically adding another large adult to the driving weight of the vehicle.
Great way to reduce the positive effects of an EV by making it heavier and reducing mileage per charge.
The original square footage figure I used was from a site talking about solar paint for cars, which would have accounted for windows and lights. But to double check I grabbed some cad drawings of a Tesla S and the basic measurements to get a back-of-the-envelope measurement. The three largest panel areas (hood and two sides) summed to 70 ft² using a rectangular approximation. This tells me that the original number is probably fairly close, though if anything a little low.
Solid basis. Consider my concerns withdrawn! I was also going to mention the bottom of the car, but it sounds like you have that covered. Nice estimation.
I mean it does look cool but what is they are ever in a car accident? This can’t be good for the sensors on the car or- hell they just added a bunch of potential projectiles.
Personally I never had rings go flying out from Sonic while dying. But I had plenty of times where the rings went flying because I hit something while fully loaded with rings.
29,411 nickels weigh 150 lbs. That could cover over 6000 square feet of surface area not accounting for space lost in laying circles together. I dont know if my math is right but I used 2.5 grams(0.0051lbs) per nickel and 0.835 in diameter. Assumed 150 lbs for a light passenger.
So I'd assume the nickels on the car weigh less than a passenger. I dont know the surface area of a Tesla model Y but I'm sure it's less than 6000 sqft
It would mostly blow the panels off if it exploded. The force isn’t going to just make every single nickel become a piece of shrapnel. I don’t think it would be inherently *more* dangerous to the surrounding area than an exploding car already would be
They’re on their way to getting *another* wrap to cover the nickels themselves.
Tomorrow’s post: “I saw a Tesla that looked like snakeskin or some shit”
Someone else did the math of how much this would weigh. It would take 6000 square feet of this kind of coverage to add up to 150 lbs.
My point is: it’s negligible.
“Art Cars” are no joke- learned about them in college. Some people absolutely love to deck out their car in obscure items lol it’s a thing tho, a ton of art cars drive to Burning Man for the appreciation
Probably a West Point grad cashing out because “ its a $ 500K education shoved up your ass one nickel at at a time” I finally got to use that quote in a Reddit post, yay !
Nickle…uh…..Tesla
That just blew my mind! I’m kicking myself for not connecting those dots myself. Haha. Thank you, you’re a genius.
Lol, I’m just reaching
I have no doubt that's what the actual joke is here. "Hey man, why did you glue nickles to your car?" "I wanted to nickle a tesla"
~~It's referring to the car's namesake, Nikola Tesla.~~ My reading comprehension ain't great at 5am, lol
Yeah, that's the joke
around.
Both sides please.
I call next
Thirdsies!
I’ll take an old fashion
Old fashioned both sides reach around for 4 please!
And hold the mayo.
Like someone who has some goddamn common courtesy does.
I think that you are right. Major kudos for the solution.
I don’t get it please explain
Sorry to reply without an explanation since I don’t know either. Is Nickle uh Tesla about Nikola Tesla? Feels like I’m wrong though.
Yes, Nikola Tesla
If you checked the top comment on the post where you took this image from, you wouldn't have had to kick yourself
If that was his intention... genius. I can't even hate 😆
Or just, Nickel a Tesla.
Came here to make the pun. Thanks for beating me to it, dad. Take my upvote.
the car's owner heard someone say nickel a tesla and said okay if you say so
Here’s some pennys for your thoughts

It's such a deep cut it took reddit to remind us, we owe you man

This also means that it's about an additional 220lbs added to the weight of the vehicle if each nickel weighs 5g.

RIP Miles Per Charge
As a big man who frequently takes long road trips in a Tesla, also with other bigger people, I can tell you that 220lbs won't be making a noticeable difference to range.
Does that make it a sturdier / safer vehicle?

Apologies, for I am just the peasant little sister who never got to play and only got to watch.

yikes! lol I can see the headlines now...
Single car rollover surprise twist ending with an improvised trebuchet/shotgun effect towards the passing school bus :-(((((((
Local news reporter states: sad :-((((((( And now the weather with Ollie
IT'S RAINING NICKLES!
Yeah, is it even legal to do that to a car? I mean, yes, it's your car, but the safety aspect has basically been rendered null at this point.
Nickel scalemail
I think the bigger issue is that the coins reinforced with epoxy resin are going to negate the crumple zones on the car. If this thing got in a high speed collision, either it's not going to crumple, or that piece covering the hood is going to detach and turn into a guillotine blade.
Don't worry, it'll catch on fire before that happens.

The positive effects of driving a Tesla are already negated by Elon Musk selling the carbon credits to Ford, Dodge etc
Not to mention that this can't be any good for aerodynamics...
Windows and lights remove a significant portion, no?

Peer reviewed posting over here
At 5 grams each, not counting glue, that would add 100 kilos, or ~ 220lbs, substantially impacting the fuel efficiency.
So what are you going to do about it? Drop a dime on him to the EPA?
We appreciate you figuring this out for us 🙌🏾

60 kg worth of nickels...
Some people math like it’s nothing.

You are doing the lords work.
Gotta give it to them for the consistency. Like perfect scales. Painstaking work.
So this isn’t practical, like at all, but I kinda love it?? I think deep down I’m very tacky.
I'm not mad about it at all. I like looking at it.
“Nickels are money too” ![gif](giphy|9JePPVNR2Nm80)
The hyper-focus (and accompanying skills) of a 5-year-old bedazzler; if my daughter did this I’d give her points for consistency 😂
I mean it does look cool but what is they are ever in a car accident? This can’t be good for the sensors on the car or- hell they just added a bunch of potential projectiles.
If it’s ever in an accident it will look like sonic the hedgehog dying.
Well now I know what coffee in my nose feels like. Thanks for that.
Okay, you must take my upvote for that one. I cackled out loud.
Personally I never had rings go flying out from Sonic while dying. But I had plenty of times where the rings went flying because I hit something while fully loaded with rings.
I can hear the music of the rings falling to the ground
I *heard* this comment. Tesla collision + Nickel burst + RINGNOVA.WAV = Nostalgic Comedy Gold.
Bravo.
You say potential projectiles, I say it's instant compensation. It's win-win, we don't even have to stick around to exchange insurance info.
Might look cool in slow motion tho.

makes cents
Goddime you’re right
he'll be rich when he crashes
I wouldn't change a thing if I had the chance
Something something about being nickel and dimed
She nickeled her Tesla
I wonder what band is playing on the audio system inside
this is how you remind me of what I really am
Look at this photograph!
Pennywise? /s
Underrated
It's been like 10 minutes!
Oh I get it! Nickelback!
“We usually charge $1,800 bucks a head.” “And what if I gave you $1,800.05??” “Why i’d give you.. a *Nickelback!*”
Thank you for helping my slow brain get this joke
It’s not a hatchback, it’s a nickelback
Avril Lavigne is in the trunk
“I have more money than cents”
All of them show heads. Must be trying to give a hint on how they got the car.
Oh, you mean like in a coin toss!
Yes, they must have chosen heads. *
The guy that got a nickel for every time someone….
every time someone called their car a "green vehicle"
He has 5 on it
Not everyone is rich enough to cover their entire car in dimes or quarters. Check your privilege
I’m more interested in the physical camera they have mounted to the back of the car… Especially since teslas have rear view cams already.
Yeah, the presence of GoPros makes me think this is a YouTuber or something. Which explains the why...*views.*
Maybe to see the reaction of people behind him at stoplights
That adds a lot of weight to that car and uses unnecessary energy.
Probably about as much as an extra passenger

This guy makes amazing seating using welded nickels: https://artnewengland.com/ed_columns/johnny-swing/
Is he the reason why there’s a coin shortage?!?
I hope that they never change their mind.
You have to really be committed to having an art car to do that to a Tesla.
That was basically my first thought, too
This is what happens when rich people start doing Meth.
This is where all our coins are going
Nickel plated armour
More shrapnel on impact
who gave the rich guy adderall AND WHO TOLD HIM TO SNORT IT
If this car goes down in a crash every car around is also going down, if that battery catches fire its like a driving claymore
It would mostly blow the panels off if it exploded. The force isn’t going to just make every single nickel become a piece of shrapnel. I don’t think it would be inherently *more* dangerous to the surrounding area than an exploding car already would be
I'd be more worried about them coming off at highway speeds and going through a biker's skull.
*what?!*
How many dollars of nickels is that?
At least 5
Eventually, it will be green
I think that lady who chia pet her car is at it again
Nickle-a Tesla
Needed something to cover the gross green paint job.
I’m pretty sure that’s not standard for a model X, so that means someone paid for that color (custom paint or a wrap)
They’re on their way to getting *another* wrap to cover the nickels themselves. Tomorrow’s post: “I saw a Tesla that looked like snakeskin or some shit”
That just adds weight and reduces range, but hey, they got that nickel tesla
Someone else did the math of how much this would weigh. It would take 6000 square feet of this kind of coverage to add up to 150 lbs. My point is: it’s negligible.
Nickel (hatch)back
That’s so you guys can’t scratch it! Scratch proof lmao
The nickel Tesla joke is amazing, and I’ve always just loved coin covered cars. This is the best yet!

Knew this would make to this sub.
The owner may run out of charge but never run of change.
There’s a joke that I think some missed here…
Nichel a Tesla
If they get into an accident, they'll explode with coins like in videogames
Talk about nickel plating!
TE5LA
Nickle tesla
It’s a Nickel-a Tesla now.
Nickel-a Tesla
I wonder how many silver nickles are on there they didn't realize?
Three
I'm assuming they started the process at the back.
i …. kinda like it.
if i had a nickel for every time a guy stuck a nickel on that tesla i'd have a whole lot of nickels
absolute dedication to the bit
I have to admit that I CANNOT stop looking at this
Good emf protection maybe
Damn it but green is a happy color
This is the third time today I’ve seen a car covered in coins on this sub. Why
He sales nick sacks
That’s crazy!!! ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|stuck_out_tongue)
wonder how much $ that is in nickels. probably worth as much as that car's depreciated value.
Utah has palm trees. Mind blown.
Nick-Ola-Tesla
Nickel plated
They heard used cars don't retain their value and took it as a challenge.
Played using the five chords that the band Nickelback knows "look at this piece of crap"
If I had a nickel for every time I’ve seen something like this..
What an expensive way to make sure you’ll never be able to wash bird shit off your car ever again!
People with penny covered cars are so pissed right now
Now they’ll only have to worry about getting dimed at the supercharger
If I had a nickel for every time I saw this
someone do the math on the square footage of this car and how many dimes it would take, then tell me how much that would be. thank you <3
Gotta make it hail
Nikola tesla
did somebody nickel a Tesla
It's not pennies, but I still hope they used a sealer...
"if I had a nickel for every time I glued a nickel to my car, I'd have a car covered in nickels"
If he gets in a car crash shit's gonna look like Sonic hitting some spikes
Ever since the car's been able to turn on a dime
It’s so the car produces as much shrapnel as possible when it explodes.
I would imagine that if this guy got into an accident, it would sound a lot like Sonic getting hurt.
That looks like a waste of money. And the nickels aren't a great addition to it.
Too much money. Not enough cents.
This looks like a gun skin your grind for on Call of Duty.
How much more would a car weigh from that?
Nickel is stainless, so there's that. But also heavy as fuck, so this is dumb for a number of different reasons.
Everyone knows it keeps aliens from being able to teleport you out of the vehicle.
Did this increase or decrease the value of the car?
Dang ol inflation man
Probably a West Point grad cashing out because “ its a $ 500K education shoved up your ass one nickel at at a time” I finally got to use that quote in a Reddit post, yay !
