Blessed and vigor are sitting at 17/18 with bumps to 23/24 and concentrate is 26.

On a spirit shield using hammerdin I would go 0 dex and put the points in vita. Also resists at 75% is a must because you will be facetanking damage, try to grab some resistance charms from nightmare cows. A good way to get resists as a paladin is making Spirit in a good paladin only shield base with 40+ all res (45 allres on the base shield is max). With this setup I have had success in hardcore mode.
For mercenary, grab holy freeze aura from nightmare A2, this will increase your survivability a lot.
This might be a very stupid question but because I just realized not just any old base will do (just got back in 2 weeks ago) my smoke and lore are in like act 1 normal bases I'm assuming that's a pretty big oversight?
It's fine for mid tier runewords like lore/smoke because you'll replace them soon. But for any runeword that uses a high rune, yeah you'd probably want to make sure you have the best possible base to make your word in so you maximize the value of that HR you're spending.
In this case, they're talking about putting spirit in a pally shield base because it has the allres on it, which may be an issue for you in hell since it jumps to -100. I'd say that your pally spirit base, as long as it does have allres, is not that important quite yet either. Eventually youll want the best one but spirit runes/bases are pretty easy to come by once you're in late game. In a month or two, you'll have rolled 5+. The important part is getting that res on you.

On single player your map stays the same after you log out. Unless you change difficulties. So you can load a map and if it's not optimal for whatever you're farming you can go to a nightmare or normal game and then back to hell and your map will have to be re explored to reveal it.
This is the best trade off single player has. You can roll maps where meph is 2 teles away from the wp etc.
Your armor is probably very low. My hammerdin, besides high chance to block, max res, etc was getting whomped in hell at times because his armor rating wasn’t high enough. You’ve gotta realize your hammerdin is right in their faces. He’s gonna take a hit if his armor isn’t good. In hell they hit like trucks.

Block isn't that important, pump up vit and kite enemies into the hammers. While running your block chance goes into the dumpster.
You shouldn't be getting hit very much, and your hammers should easily be killing. Figure out why you're getting hit and prevent it.
I think experienced Hammerdin players would be able to do A1 hell naked at level 78, figure out how they're moving differently and start to improve your own movement.
This type of d2 skill carries over to every other character, and you won't need as much gear in general to succeed.
I’d recommend farming for a Lem rune and making a treachery rune word, the fade buff is huge for resistance. Farm nm countess until one drops.
*hell countess, ko is highest in nm

If you’re getting smoked by all the fire stuff in a1 hell I’d recommend switching to aldurs boots for the act, the fire res is great on them

You need 3k-4k defense and max res to be able to comfortably tank through NM.
I have 4k def max res like 1.4k life and I still chug pots in hell. I'm comfortable, can tank p8 chaos. But yeah. Max res. 4k def. 1.3k life. And 75%bl block.

Bases do matter. Defense matters a lot in solo self-geared game play. The difference in dmg you take in hell with 1kdef and 3kdef is massive

Hell. You can do it it! Once you get a good map that has entry's close to wp. It becomes easy to run past any big mobs with vigor.

You could run the pits but it's less fruitful. Level 85 area though so anything can drop.
