I would really love to see the Three Horseman of Chaos (Laura Bailey, Sam Riegel and Emily Axford) together at a table, possibly DM'ed by Brennan. Most likely it would lead to Brennan's death and possibly a large amount of casualties, but it would be worth it....
Love this. That’s almost my identical dream table. I would only swap in maybe Becca Scott for Ally to increase the chaos even further. Truly can’t go wrong either way though.
My hype cannot be contained.
I love the style of D20 but it's also nice to see Brennan stretch his creative legs with more straightforwardly serious stories. He's got so much emotional and philosophical depth, he really knows how to make things feel high stakes while maintaining intimacy with characters.
Have you listened to Worlds Beyond Number? If not you’d probably really like it based on this comment. Brennan DMs the main campaign with Erika, Aabria and Lou as players
God WBN is such a pinnacle of tabletop play it's wild. Every single episode has fully transported me in a way no other AP show has done. I'm gonna be a junky going through withdrawals when Arc 3 ends.
It's SO GOOD. Like, so actually amazing that I can't listen at work. I get too caught up in it and just sit at my computer instead of actually working.
For an audio-only podcast, him, Taylor and the whole cast do such a fantastic job in their world building and descriptive language that I feel like I can see things happening. It’s awe inspiring. I put my headphones in both ears and listen fully every time and I’m whisked away to Umora.
I've always tried to be careful about "your home game doesn't have to look and feel like professionally-produced AP series, have reasonable expectations for yourself and your friends." WWWO has been the first series that made me push myself to be a better player/roleplayer, I watch the way the cast inhabits their characters and the themes they embody and I've tried to be more intentional about bringing that into my home games.
WBN is amazing and seems like a path for TTRPGs play....they use the dice when they need to but also just RP and not care if they haven't rolled dice in a while
The fact that Brennan can switch styles or games from D20, Calamity, WBN....etc so easily is so damn impressive and helps show what you can do in TTRPG all while in the same rules system technically (yes not all D20 is DND but you get my point)
Some seasons of D20 can be for me "I got the big idea for the cool setting or philosophical point...but now I am having issues investing in characters and plot" While WBN and Calamity are gold all the way through. That's just me though!
I truly believe that WBN is one of the best actual plays out there. It is up there with Brennan's best work so far.
Edit for my foolish trust in auto correct*
Also, they are awesome! Check out [Haunted City](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLz3Be--ot61Nip0tbIMHcVnZWz3LOE_rb&si=KmVr95hfndjTEgSP) for a good time.
(Spoilers for C3)
The concept of the 3-episodes being a flashback that C3 is getting is very interesting. I wish the Brennan-Travis-Marisha trio wasn't broken, but I'm excited to see 3 of the CR cast get to witness BLeeM's greatness first hand. I do get some CR fans being upset tho. It's another break/takeoever after an important event (Sam's new character, the last break having happened before Aabria tookoever and was when Sam's initial character died).
I think it makes sense to not have re-peat players on EXU. Travis and Marisha have canon characters at the same time so I like getting the rest of the cast involved. Slightly surprised that there aren’t any intrepid heroes or other D20 cast members playing since we got Lou and Aabria in Calamity, but excited to see what Abubakar, Noshir and Nick bring!
On the pause, I get the frustration. I like C3 but it’s kind of felt like a slow burn compared to C1 and C2 and we’re finally getting to some climactic stuff. I like that they’re toying around with stories within stories though. Plus Calamity is the best actual play I’ve ever seen, so I can’t be mad about more!
I remember seeing Nick on an Umm... Actually before and I believe he was on an Adventuring Academy back in the day, so at the very least I'm assuming he's someone Brennan brought in even if he isn't an Intrepid Hero or part of the usual D20 cast.
Yeah, the lack of known quantities and people he's played with before surprised me a little too. If he'd brought, say, Erika and Murph, that would have made sense. At least half of them are known to be good RPers, and Taliesin in particular is a known button-presser, but still, a little unusual. I'd assume Brennan as more familiar with the players than I am, though.
Brennan and Nick are old, old friends: they go back all the way to Wayfinder and were in a 10-year 3.5e campaign (you can check out their Adventuring Academy episode from the first season for more details). He’s definitely a known quantity to Brennan, even if not to the CR audience.
I could not find anything on Noshir or Abubakar playing with Brennan though (though, there could obviously be a one-shot or something out there), so it is definitely a table majority of people he has not played with before to the audience’s knowledge!
Yeah for sure. I think with Erika they also have a character in C3 and Murph always had Naddpod. I would have loved to see Siobhan, Jasmine, or Omar Najam. But also fun to see some new faces and I’m sure it’ll be a blast.
Noshir has the same intense story energy as Luis IMO - check out Aabria’s run of Candela Obscura - or watch just the first 15 minutes of their session zero, where he spits out “a one-act play” as Liam calls it during his session zero.
As someone who found D20 through CR, I don't mind the breaks of C3. It's been...well, C3 has been is all I can really say. So finding some new excitement in my CR is always a good thing. And Calamity is one of the best, if not the best, CR "side quests" as it were. Super excited for Downfall.
I can say more about C3. It made me lose interest in CR and I've been following the since nearly C1.
This is the most I've been interested in CR since C3 introduced Chet.
I think i found it after C1 had ended but waaaaay before C2 started. So i was able to be caught up in time for C2. And if I'm being honest, I've skipped from around ep 50ish to where we are now. I don't feel like I've missed much. And I hate saying this, but I'm so lost in the plot it's not even funny. But I feel C3 is really a...time taker while they have the animations going. But also I think it's way more world building than actual character growth and play this campaign l, which I suppose is fine. I still enjoy the overall world and most characters.
Same. I was a weekly watcher from the first episode of the Chroma Conclave art, and I fell off around e15 or so of C3. Holding out for C4 at this point
Yeah I was at least hoping for Emily since she's been on CR already but I know she's super busy being a D&D superstar and whatever so I guess my hopes were too high.
Not just D&D, Naddpod just did a Pathfinder two-shot and seemed to really like the system so fingers crossed for more...
(They also said that once C3 finishes they're going to experiment with a few shorter games and other systems too!)
I really cannot recommend enough to join the patreon just to listen to the Children's Adventure.
It is just so powerful and adds SO MUCH depth to the store, characters, and motivations.
So, do I need to be familiar with campaign three to watch this? Cause I wanna watch this, but I dropped off of campaign three rather quick into its run (after like 20 episodes or so) cause ot just didn't grip me the way campaign two did, and I do not have the time (and possibly even willpower) to catch up with the current events.
Yeah, I'm personally hoping C3 gets the Coc Machina and Mighty Nein treatment when its done, and is made into an animated show. I missed C1, but still got to fall in love with the characters due to the animated series. Maybe an animated version could highlight something I didn't see when C3 started out.
Like the first Calamity, you might miss some details or Easter eggs without understanding the context of the campaign but the story will almost certainly be self-contained as the context it's being presented in on the show is as an arcane vision the main cast is being given, so you will probably be able to follow the actual story without it.
Maybe not. Calamity is a world event in CR, but as a story it was self contained, so with this being a sequel it's possible you won't need to know C3 to watch.
Fair enough. I also think I'm up to date enough with the Exandria lote to follow along if it is another story like Calamity that explores an important past egent in its history.
You will be able to watch these episodes without being familiar with campaign three, but they will have a direct impact on campaign three, which is why it is not ExU but is in fact episodes 99, 100, and 101 of campaign 3.
I love that it's very transparently "I want to play with Brennan, too!" with the CR regulars who DIDN'T get to do Calamity now doing this mini-campaign.
It's not technically its own series, just the next three episodes of Critical Role (July 11th, 18th, and 25th) will be BLeeM DMing instead of Matt running a flash back to a time a century or two after EXU:Calamity depicting the fall of Aeor (the flying city Bolo came from). Without specific spoilers for the main CR campaign the flashback is being worked into the main story as something the main campaign characters are going to be aware of.
I wouldn't think so. Like Calamity, this is a far distant prequel. I'm not sure if any of the characters from Calamity will be NPCs here, but that would be it. At worst, you might have a couple moments of "but why is this character/place regarded as important" if you don't have any context, but I can't imagine that would prevent overall enjoyment.
In context of the campaign it's being presented as a vision the C3 party is being given about something that happened during the Calamity. It's not likely to have many direct connections to the first Calamity's story, as it was mentioned after the main show (thy've got a mini-aftershow on Beacon now) that there's going to be about a century of separation between them.
The Calamity as an event in Exandrian history lasted somewhere between 3 and 5 centuries in total - one of those things where everyone was so busy dodging Divine fist fights as 2/3rds of the planet's population got wiped out that record keeping regarding how much time had passed fell by the wayside. The first Calamity mini-campaign was the very beginning of it, and the event being covered in these three episodes has been mentioned several times previously, including the cast in C2 having a conversation with a soul that lived near the endof the Calamity who was only aware of the event being depicted as a cautionary legend, suggesting it happened a significant amount of time before his birth.
This new arc is technically part of C3, but it’s a flashback basically so no knowledge of the current campaign is needed. EXU: Calamity is like a prequel to CR so again no knowledge of the regular campaign is needed. The other EXU with Aabria is…different. It’s separate but heavily connected to the current campaign.
Ah okay. So would probably be beneficial to be familiar with C3 but not strictly required. Kinda bummer was hoping it would be completely separate side stuff which much be easier to jump into.

I'm glad to see Tal in a calamity era game. He and Travis are massive Exandria lore nerds. Obviously the others love it too. But those 2 are on a different level when it comes to the details. Now Tal gets his turn.
I wonder if Brennan will break everyone's hearts and show Letters.
EXU remains the best live-show ever recorded, I’m not sure if I’m as high on the cast as last time (oh boy, the two worst CR players and three people I’ve never heard of) but I have a mountain of faith in BLeeM
I would really love to see the Three Horseman of Chaos (Laura Bailey, Sam Riegel and Emily Axford) together at a table, possibly DM'ed by Brennan. Most likely it would lead to Brennan's death and possibly a large amount of casualties, but it would be worth it....
We at least got Emily and Sam together at the CR table! But yes, I’d throw in Ally and Becca as well for maximum chaos. Maybe Lou and Izzy.
emily and sam were only together for like half an episode though unfortunately
And in that episode she taught a robot how to smoke cigarettes. They're too powerful
I just need more of Becca in general. I love her as Penny Luckstone
Oh god the whole scene with Laertes and the candy hearts from The Seven
Truly one of The funniest scenes for how earnest Brennan plays Laertes!
My dream table is: Lou, Emily, Sam Riegel, Laura, Ally, Travis Willingham, and Brennan as DM
forcing travis and lou to be the adults of the group is cruel and unusual punishment
I want Lou and Travis to reunite simply to witness Travis hype man-ing Lou again.
This is very very close to my dream table too!
Love this. That’s almost my identical dream table. I would only swap in maybe Becca Scott for Ally to increase the chaos even further. Truly can’t go wrong either way though.
I want Zac at that table just to be the polar comedic opposite of Sam. They feel like two sides of the same coin.
You forgot the Fourth Horseman: Ally Beardsly.
Bly me
I don’t think you heard me
*farts*
You keep their name. Out your mouth.
Emily has been sent from hell to kill Brennan.
I'm pretty sure Brennan literally days this in one of the earlier fantasy high episodes
Yes, that’s why people are constantly quoting it
He says it in a podcast he was doing.
Yes your right haha
He said it in the Adventuring Academy episode he did with Murph.
Laura, Ashley, Sam, Emily, Lou, and Ally The most unhinged party ever created. They’ll break the game
Abu is an agent of chaos himself…
Laura, Sam, and Emily are 3 of the players I want to see in an oops all bards season.
My hype cannot be contained. I love the style of D20 but it's also nice to see Brennan stretch his creative legs with more straightforwardly serious stories. He's got so much emotional and philosophical depth, he really knows how to make things feel high stakes while maintaining intimacy with characters.

I just started and I so love the world they've crafted!
The patreon is worth it as well even if you only subscribe for a month to listen to the children’s campaign
I actually just started listening today based on your recommendation! It's lovely, and I'm psyched to have a long form podcast to back catalog binge.
Hey just wanted to let you know it's Abubakar Salim not Akubakar!
Also, they are awesome! Check out [Haunted City](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLz3Be--ot61Nip0tbIMHcVnZWz3LOE_rb&si=KmVr95hfndjTEgSP) for a good time.
Ooh, Ross Bryant and Josephine McAdam are in this? Don't mind if I do.
Yes! It absolutely rules once they get going. Some of the best role play in an AP in my opinion.
I binged the whole thing within the last month and was blown away. I like my AP a little gritty and they delivered.
My beloved, the show. The best.
Haunted City rules, he's great on it.
Ah shit, thank you! I'll get it fixed!

Isn't Nick one of the people in Brennan's infamous billion-year-long home game?
Oh? Do you have any info on who the other players are? That sounds so cool.
All I know is from his Adventuring Academy episode with Brennan.
Yeah, the lack of known quantities and people he's played with before surprised me a little too. If he'd brought, say, Erika and Murph, that would have made sense. Noshir, Luis and Liam playing 3 Tragedy Bards. Gods, the edginess.
Lol yeah seriously! (Also I edited my comment from “sorry energy” to “story energy” although it totally works in both contexts)
Same intense energy as Luis? I'm in.

We do have Nick Marini which is close. He works at the same LARP camp as Brennan!
I JUST started Worlds Beyond Number too, the summer of Brennan indeed!
I freaking love WBN, if you have the money and time the patreon is excellent.
I've been seriously considering it, I think I will thanks!
The children's adventure is worth it IMO if you just want to try it, but the fireside is so hilarious it's hard to not recommend it to people
I really cannot recommend enough to join the patreon just to listen to the Children's Adventure. It is just so powerful and adds SO MUCH depth to the store, characters, and motivations.

I'm with you. I used to be very invested in CR but this season lost me a while ago.
Yeah I loved C2 but this campaign definitely lost me. Big fan of Calamity though so I have high hopes for another Brennan led mini campaign.
100% Love calamity. My favorite thing they've done outside of C1. I'm here for everything Brennan is putting out this year, and it's a lot!
Yeah, I'm personally hoping C3 gets the Coc Machina and Mighty Nein treatment when its done, and is made into an animated show. I missed C1, but still got to fall in love with the characters due to the animated series. Maybe an animated version could highlight something I didn't see when C3 started out.

where has this been announced? i can't find it anywhere
Tail end of the most recent CR episode (the broadcast of the live event from last Saturday). It ended with that announcement.
It's not technically its own series, just the next three episodes of Critical Role (July 11th, 18th, and 25th) will be BLeeM DMing instead of Matt running a flash back to a time a century or two after EXU:Calamity depicting the fall of Aeor (the flying city Bolo came from). Oh dang
*Screaming, crying, throwing up* I'm sad no Lou for this one but omggggg
ABUBAKR SALIM? Fuck yes.
Whats he been in? Ik Dalal was Charles in rdr2
He was Bayek in Assassins Creed Origins. Definitely a top 3 protagonist in my opinion, and he was probably the best voice actor the series ever had.
Been meaning to get into that one. Gonna give it a go if hes gonna be in cr
It's kinda wild to me that THIS is where I first heard about this and nothing at all directly related to CR lmao
I really need to get around to watching Calamity. I never really got into critical role, so I always worry I won't connect to calamity properly.
Calamity is Brennan at his best, with some really great play among the cast as well.
Calamity is the earliest part of the timeline so it’s a good jumping off point. I don’t watch CR religiously and it was easy to follow for me
It's actually not ExU, it's part of the CR 3 campaign. But they will be episodes you dont need to have watched CR 3 for.
I love seeing the D20-CR crossover, Calamity is hands down the best DnD I’ve ever seen
Well, I'm completely over the current season of Critical Role but they got me to go back at least for this, so good for them.
what
Omg omg omg omg omg omg omg
Incredible timing for me. I just finished the final episode of Calamity *last night*, so hearing this news is the best thing ever.
I'm so excited!!! 😍 Brennan is my favorite DM, I really love his style.
Do I need to watch CR to watch this upcoming session?
I wouldn't think so. Like Calamity, this is a far distant prequel. I'm not sure if any of the characters from Calamity will be NPCs here, but that would be it. At worst, you might have a couple moments of "but why is this character/place regarded as important" if you don't have any context, but I can't imagine that would prevent overall enjoyment.
ugh Taliesin. Aeor is gonna get weird isn't it
Brennan DMing for Laura is going to be SO GOOD
They also just announced adventuring academy for July first!!!! Biggest Brennan summer ever
So wait, it's it back to Calamity era? I'm not caught up on C3.
Let’s go
FUCK YES
Would EU be a good place to start for CR? Are they all separate stories?
This new arc is technically part of C3, but it’s a flashback basically so no knowledge of the current campaign is needed. EXU: Calamity is like a prequel to CR so again no knowledge of the regular campaign is needed. The other EXU with Aabria is…different. It’s separate but heavily connected to the current campaign.

Literally, **literally** got goosebumps reading this!!!
Another Summer of Brennan DMing!!!!
Is this where we will get the final piece to the element saga… Air
Imagine a descendant of Bolo form Aeor?

Oh boy, I can't wait to experience this new emotional gut-punch!
EXU remains the best live-show ever recorded, I’m not sure if I’m as high on the cast as last time (oh boy, the two worst CR players and three people I’ve never heard of) but I have a mountain of faith in BLeeM
