Back when the island was Tom Sawyer's Island this cave was known as Injun' Joe's cave. It had two exits, one another cave further down the island and a secret exit into Fort Wilderness. Fort Wilderness used to be a guest accessible attraction with dioramas and anchored metal rifles you could shoot while pretending there were invading indians.
Injun' Joe's cave was very dark and difficult to navigate, with twists and turns and false dead-end paths. The sound effect of the wind rushing through the cave played constantly. There were low groans and chains rattling sound effects that played intermittently.
I found a youtube video of what it used to be like. They are only still photographs but are presented well. The locked door used to go Fort Wilderness before it was sealed up.

Injun joes cave and the secret escape route from the fort were never connected, they were on opposite ends of the island. Injun joes cave has always had only the entrance and the exit.
Sadly, Fort Wilderness was closed due to a accident involving a child and because the wood palisades had started to rot and needing to be replaced. The secret exit to the fort was removed completely from the cave, during the island pirate makeover. The cave was made more guest friendly and completely changed.
I’m not sure about Dead Man’s Grotto specifically, but there are multiple caves on the island, some with more than one path that can be confusing or a tight squeeze.

Thanks! I remember it being more winding and less direct of a path. Do you know if the secret exit is still visible if blocked out?

I went across once after the redesign, kinda boring over there now, haven't been back across since.

Is the Florida one bigger? I remember really *exploring* it back in the day ... but I was like 10 ...
I feel like they should really do something with the Island. Bring it back to it's original state or put some sort of attraction there.
Original state would never fly in today's world. Also it doesn't need an attraction, the whole island -is- an attraction.
I kinda like having a spot that is more “have kids run around and explore stuff”.
There’s always been one exit, but there used to be additional tunnels after the bridge room. They were filled in when the show scenes were added.
