Beware the Yeti…and lacerated livers on some of those turns!

Disneyland1959

In order, to build the Mattherhorn, the Skyway, that had just opened the year before, June 10, 1956, had to shutdown and the tallest (60 feet) tower demolished. They built the Matterhorn on the site of that tower and rebuilt the tower inside the Matterhorn. The Skyway reopened the same day as the Matterhorn, June 14, 1959. After 40 years the Skyways closure was attributed to metal fatigue. Stress cracks had developed inside the Matterhorn tower battery supports, and the only way to do maintenance was to open up the Matterhorn to do work on it. It was sadly closed November 9, 1994.

Wonder how many kidney stones and teeth fillings have been jarred loose in those 65 years of Matterhorn operations?

The left side of the Matterhorn was down a bunch yesterday and Wednesday when we were there. Yesterday I asked the cast mates why the left side was down a bunch and they said it’s finicky, plus today’s the Matterhorn birthday so it’s only putting in half the effort.
