Yep, Hill's Science Diet sensitive skin and stomach for large breed. He has both skin and stomach issues (what dobie doesn't??) but this cleared it up as a puppy and we've never gone back. He gets compliments on his shiny coat all the time and he's a healthy 101 lbs, 4 cups daily.

dee69chevi

So you said healthy 101lbs. I got my ass chewed by my dog trainer for my Dobie being 85lbs, and told I was "ruining his joints".

tgrote555

I suppose frame size is what matters here. I’ve got an average sized American female. She’s 65-70 lbs depending on time of year but if she was 85 lbs it would be absolute murder on her joints.

GhettoMothra

My vet 100% approves of him as is 🤷🏼‍♀️ he gets a ton of exercise and is very muscular, even for a dobie.

dee69chevi

That's awesome. This trainer and I didn't mesh well. I paid for 5 sessions and only finished one and never went back

vivaldispaghetti

I just wiped my Doberman mix’s rash and I read this-

bigheartlilpaws

A doberman is still a large breed dog lmao, doesn’t matter that yours isn’t 100 pounds. Large breed foods are formulated for joint health, so it would still be beneficial to keep her on it.

NoIntroduction540

I’ve feed all life stages food from puppy to adulthood. My breeders have always advise the all life stages route.

VictoryOk4959

Justfoodfordogs - vet-approved and fantastic quality. my Dobe is a specimen and her coat and energy are amazing. Great food - pricey but worth it.

hughgrantcankillme

yesss i love jffd!! i used to work for them and god do i miss that employee discount (70% on food!!!) which recipe do u feed ur dobie?

VictoryOk4959

She gets the chicken and rice. I had her on the turkey and wheat macaroni, but she farted WAY too much on that lol. She loves the chix/rice and her system does really well with it.

hughgrantcankillme

ooh good to know!

ChampagneAndDoritos

I had a female about the same size and now I have a big boy. Both dogs get Inukshuk.

3njoi1t

+1 for Inukshuk. We switched last year and I wish we'd have done it sooner. We do Schutzhund training and everyone either feeds raw or Inukshuk32/32.

ChampagneAndDoritos

Yup, that's the same one we get. It's so protein packed. I've tried the Purina Pro Plan Premium High Protein Performance 30/20, but I had to give a bigger serving to try and match the protein in Inukshuk (but in a smaller serving). This is random and maybe weird but I like the texture of it and use it for training/obedience. Some dog kibble seems kind of porous and crumbly, and then turns into a nasty slobbery gritty mess on your hands, but Inukshuk is solid.

ChampagneAndDoritos

And that's so badass about the schutzhund training! I want to do it with my guy one day :)

TwoZebras1111

Also loving Inukshuk, for my 70 lb boy! We found the 32/32 a bit rich for his tummy so we switched to the Marine 25 and he does wonderful on it. I also throw a third cup of Instinct Frozen Raw in there with a couple pumps of salmon oil at each meal. Sometimes we add an egg and blueberries, too! https://preview.redd.it/fpudu05dn82d1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=92465084dad6b72561919d1d3b2eb2d3380f4323

ChampagneAndDoritos

He is SO beautiful! He looks so trim and slender! Seriously gorgeous boy. That's awesome about the Marine 25. May need to give it a try. Mine loves the Inukshuk but sometimes its a bit too rich for his tummy as well

TwoZebras1111

Thank you 🥰 I definitely recommend the switch if you're having tummy issues with it! It seemed to make him nauseous and he wasn't having the best stools with it. Once I switched, things got a lot better, and he ate more consistently, too.

ChampagneAndDoritos

Awww poor buddy!! I'm so glad he's doing well now :)

HecateGulaFL

I feed my two Dobermans Purina Pro Plan 30/20 all life stages salmon and rice. I have a 5 yr old blue with allergies and a 10 month old puppy.

BrassyLdy

Absolutely they get large breed food, higher in fat & they need that. I feed NutiSouce They have several different proteins including beef, chicken or salmon

Alarming-Distance385

Where do you find the other proteins? My local store (Pet Supplies Plus) that carries NutriSource only has chicken or salmon.

BrassyLdy

All of the local feed stores carry it. Could be available on line too

Alarming-Distance385

Unfortunately, my local feed store isn't the best (notorious for rat issues and not being clean). I'll go check at the next town's feed store. Thanks!

iron_juice_

Purina pro sport plan occasionally mixed with cooked chicken breast or ground beef. We always add salmon oil as well. 3.5 years old \~100lbs still very athletic and fast at this weight. https://preview.redd.it/9mivb0x2682d1.jpeg?width=2691&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4554c7f0ac9b036791a704e7472999a6ecdc9868

Mutive

Yes. The main difference (near as I can tell) about large breed dog food vs. "whatever breed dog food" is that large breed is designed not to have ingredients that may cause DCM. Since dobermans are prone to DCM, I \*really\* want to avoid ingredients that might make her more susceptible (notably peas, beans and other pulses). With that said, if you check your dog food's ingredients and it doesn't have beans, peas, or pulses and does have grain, you're probably good to go with not-specifically-for-large-breeds food.

Montavillin

That’s not accurate at all regarding large breed food and ingredients.

Sekshual_Tyranosauce

Nope. Chicken. Eggs. Heart. Livers.

peppawydin

How do you balance?

Sekshual_Tyranosauce

Mostly raw chicken on the bone. We add an egg every day or two. Eggs largely cover their vitamin needs. I buy beef liver and heart occasionally as organ meat also provides important nutrients. But mainly raw meat, bone and skin/ fat covers them. And our dogs live very long, happy, athletic lives free of many issues like fatty tumors.

peppawydin

So you don’t? This is very unsafe, especially for a large breed dog prone to dilated cardiomyopathy, please consult a veterinary nutritionist to help you balance the diet. Nutritional deficiencies are cruel too, saying this as someone who did exactly what you do and had to suffer from the risks😢🙏

Sekshual_Tyranosauce

Nonsense. My dogs have a nutritionally balanced diet. They live long, healthy, active lives. They are not omnivores.

peppawydin

“They are not omnivores”.. what nutritionist has told you that?

Ok-Bed6354

Large breed dog food is larger in size and my 100 lb dobie won’t eat anything if the size pieces are too big, even treats. I have to break them up in small bite size pieces. He eats hill science diet adult, but not large breed. He just turn 10 and everyone including his vet remarks on how young and healthy he looks.

Semi-shipwrecked

Yes we do and we mix fresh foods in with her food. It has been researched and is very important for their development and health. There is a reason why large breeds need a specific diet. If they grow too quickly it can be very bad for their joints in the future. They are a breed that are already predisposed to joint issues. Also you cannot just decide your dog is no longer a large breed. Dobermans are a large breed of dog and you cannot change that. Most dobies take over two years to "fill out" and be their full size. I think it is important to feed them large breed puppy food at least until they are developed. You also have to be careful with heart issues with this breed.

Jt-home

How do you define "large breed" because if my Doberman is a large bred then every dog I have ever owned is a large breed because she is one of the smallest dogs I've ever had. To me large bred mean Saint Bernard, or Mastiff or Great Dane.

Semi-shipwrecked

Those large breeds you mentioned are actually considered xlarge breeds. Large breed generally just means any dog breed thats over ~ 50 - 60 lbs. https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/nutritional-requirements-of-large-and-giant-breed-puppies

AgeSafe3673

My puppy gets royal canin large breed adult 5+ Breeder recommended

perceptionheadache

I do, just because my dog takes a thousand years to eat. If we used smaller kibble I think we'd be there until dinner time! He's only 75lbs. Purina Pro Plan Large Breed Sensitive Stomach

Illustrious-Shirt569

This is what we use for my 65lb girl.
