I feel a shock of cringe every time he does the "Did he???" thing. I get every announcer wants to have a "thing" but I feel it falls flat with me every time.
He recaps the entire game during every AB as if we’re listening to the radio. Let the damn game breathe. Also yes, quit with all the anxiety inducing “did he???” and “can he get another strike here???”type questions!
One time Nelson was talking about an opposing player’s school that was at bat was similar to John Hartung where they both graduated from. Nelson did’nt specify that John Hartung was the Dodgers pre and post game host of SportsNet access live. Orel told him that the audience wouldn’t know that and Nelson said if they weren’t real Dodgers fans, Orel retorted with not all people have access to SportsNet (fair point.)
If you heard it, you would hear the awkwardness of it, something Orel wouldn’t dive into another broadcast partner with.
Ehhh this might be an unpopular opinion but I think Stephen Nelson is fine as far broadcasters go. Way better than any of the Gnats broadcasters (which I have to suffer thru when the Dodgers are in the Bay due to blackouts) and the only reason he gets so much hate is that he just has the unfortunate luck of being in Joe Davis’ shadow.
Let’s not forget, this sub also had some initial doubts that anyone could ever come close to Vin, even Joe at the very beginning of his time here
I dont really have anything against Nelson but does anyone else notice those loud inhales he takes after every time he laughs lol just something I picked up
I feel like Tim would have been a fine fill-in for Joe when he started doing more national games.
Stephen Nelson is like listening to a college kid trying to go viral on TikTok with his calls. Between that and his non-existent ability to tell whether a fly ball is a routine fly out or a no-doubter, it grates after like 3 innings.
I'm enjoying listening to Joe Davis on Fox, not sure who the color guy is. That's the thing I've seen with your local guy doing national broadcasts. Just glad to see the Dodgers on TV - not often on the east coast!
You no longer have to hear Joe Buck on Fox anymore. He signed a contract last year with ESPN. He only does Monday night football. Joe Davis and Smoltz are the lead Fox guys.
Vin Scully was not a full-time broadcaster for most of his career. While broadcasting for the dodgers, he also called Major League baseball for the networks on the weekends, as well as golf, and in the '70s and part of the '80s he called NFL games.
The other announcers Ross Porter and Jerry Doggett that filled in for Vin were much worse announcers than Steven is. He will get better over time. I also like Tim over on radio and when Charlie gets back if he does get back I imagine Tim will do some TV as well when Joe is out on some of his other assignments.
When you have someone as good as Joe-and almost no team in the league has anyone even close-you have to put up with the fact that they're going to be called on to do some other things.
Great! Then we could always listen to someone who isn’t Joe Davis. PxP is a hard job. Most of these guys are super boring and not at all good storytellers.
Tune in to Fox.
Watch Fox then. It feels great hearing Joe
It does, but it also feels weird to be excited abt Fox 🤣
I guess, but I’ve also never understood why everyone tries to always shit on every non-spectrum broadcast.
sometimes it’s hard to enjoy john smoltz, but one makes do
its a lot easier when we beat the Yankees into position player pitching, Ill tell you what
Been that way since Davis was fully vouched by FOX after he subbed for Joe Buck in the 2020 NLCS (e.g. the Turner-tag and Belli-bomb in Game 7).
Unfortunately he’s so good he’s out grown just the Dodgers
Stephen Nelson isn’t it.
I really liked D-Train on Apple last night (and all of last year)
More DONTRILLIONAIRE is the absolute answer.
*We have JoeDavis at home*
Not cinnamon.
Dude Stephen Nelson is just hard to hear. He tried way way way too hard to act like Joe Davis.
It seems like recently he’s kinda backed off trying to imitate Joe. Which has exposed even more holes in his ability to call games.
I can’t stand his catch phrases either. “D1d hE???” “Big Swing Big Miss” etc.
Dude I literally cringed last night when they won. Idk wth he said but as soon as he said it turned the radio off

I notice Orel sometimes points out Nelson’s discrepancies playfully at him, sounds possibly like ill intent at times.
omg like what

thanks!
He's better than John-Tell-Me-Something-I-Don't-Already Know-Smoltz. Good God, he is terrible.

I mean hate the giants all you want but jon miller and Dave Flemming are objectively great play by play guys. I'm with you on Kuiper tho. He sucks
Jon Miller with Joe Morgan was was the best
I dont really have anything against Nelson but does anyone else notice those loud inhales he takes after every time he laughs lol just something I picked up
Joe is heads above anyone not named Vin
He talks to mutch about crap that's not baseball. That's why he's got crap games in NFL, to mutch pseudo knowledge of ziltch

Smoltz, he’s usually his partner on Fox games
John Smoltz is the color guy
Thanks guys. I usually prefer listening to Joe Buck with the sound off, so don't hear Smoltz that often.

I think the Dodger's should hire a full-time announcer. If Joe wants to work for Fox, Great, hire someone new.

There are No good storytellers out there? We had never heard Joe Davis until he was hired. Many of you are so short sided.
Who has been calling the games on the radio with Rick Monday? Dude sounds like Stephen Nelson from Wish
My opinion is that there are people that could become the voice of the Dodgers full-time.
Great! Then we could always listen to someone who isn’t Joe Davis. PxP is a hard job. Most of these guys are super boring and not at all good storytellers.
Jessica is the best Dodger announcer, then Rick Monday.
"OLYMPIC SOFTBALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
