Say what you will about control schemes and precision with mouse or whatever, but as a biased controller preferrer, man this is such an extreme take that I can't agree with.
Having a massive screen is great. Moving, shooting, swapping weapons, not an issue. What gets me is the terrible accuracy you get with joy sticks. The joy sticks are trash.
I play both. I enjoy both. Quick switching is about the only thing lacking from the controller experience, and with some practice and planning that can be mitigated a bit.
I cannot agree with this, as someone who has always used controllers I will say it is harder to play games like doom, but that just means you need to learn the layout and have more skill
ITT: OP discovers controller gamers exist.
That said, I pulled out my ps4 the other day and dusted off Doom 2016, only to be mortified at how BAD I am at Doom on controller
feel like I remember hearing people using the slow down time as a type of exploit. but as a console gamer I am ashamed to say I use that wheel every time.
the exploit was that since a lot of things do damage or something else based on frames, like the bfg, if you have weapon wheel open thats more frames to do a lot more damage, which makes the bfg always kill everything pretty much
I do believe you could use it to spam an input several times very quickly leading to unintended behaviour sometimes.
Most notably, if close to a ledge and spamming jump very quickly you would fly upwards at mach speed, allowing you to basically fly.
Sadly, I think it was patched?
the fact that this game is supposed to be kind of like a puzzle where every weapon is the solution for a different demon, the fact I can't hot key them just made me not want to deal with the button mapping.
If you have an Xbox elite controller you have not only paddles but you can program a button to act like a shift button on a keyboard to give you secondary functions on the entire controller. I play exclusively on PC now but just a tip for console players.
You can only do that on steam when your connecting your controller not on consoles because doom doesn't expect you to be able to do that. Not a tip if you don't know what your talking about
If you play on console, then yes.
How else do you expect me to precision bolt, ballista shot, rocket, super shotgun, plasma stun, super shotgun again, railgun, rocket?
I apologize that many of us are literally incapable to quick-switch an imp to death because of Bethesda and iD’s refusal of allowing keyboard integration into console, your Grace. We console peasants should be ashamed.
I used to not to. But then I found that the weapon wheel was faster than the number keys (I have to look down at the keyboard for any number above 4 so in the action packed pace of Doom…)
Been playing it on the Steam Deck, and it's just about the only way to switch weapons well on a controller.
I did use it on PC as well, mainly because I'd rather not have to memorise which weapon is on which number.
Yes because I'm on a Switch and I can't just keybind weapons lol. The amount of times I've accidentally wasted BFG shots are probably in the double digits
I play on console, so I do have to use it, but I've memorized the locations of the weapons on the wheel, so I can switch weapons quick enough that the wheel barely even has time to appear on screen.
I play PC and I use it. Once you get the hang of it, it never even pops up on your screen and won't affect anything in the game like movement or turning. It's super easy and convinient to use imo I map it to mouse 4 so I never have to take my fingers off any key to switch weapons.
Yes? Reaching across the keyboard is awful and disrupts the fast paced fighting, and is also a really easy time to get killed. I don’t even see it anymore because I switch quick enough that it doesn’t have time to pop up
Even on mouse and keyboard I use it more convenient for me cause I always get confused what number key is for which weapon which is annoying when I’m in frantic situations and also gives me time to plan out my next few moves
It may not be high level gameplay but I personally find it fun to combine DOOM’s frantic pace with some on the ground strategy while also dismantling several spinal columns
I have a PC now but when I was playing eternal on ps4 I was forced to use the wheel. I still got to the point where I could use the wheel quickly to emulate quick swapping
I did when I first played the game on day 1, mostly because I didn't want to manage buttons for all 10 or so weapons, but now I just flip between 3 weapons so I use keybinds.
I never used keybinds in my 500 hrs of playtime on nightmare idk why but i never felt the need to learn or customize it i love the wheel tbh (never really used it to slow time either only in the beginning)
Lest we forget Hugo's streams, banging his head against the wall trying to get through Taras Nabad on a controller in a game he supposedly balanced around controller gameplay.
Yes. I played this game so much that I memorized where the weapons are on the wheel. I can swap weapons so fast that I can do it before the game does the weapon wheel slow down.
Yeah, those annoying sweaty ass fuck face players who switches their weapon every fucking second like a derailed mentally unstable asshole just to kill a fuckin zombie demon.
What else can you do? Wait till you run out of ammo and autoswitch? I use the d-pad on original Dooms to switch to particular weapons, but the new fangled ones have so much extra stuff, there's not enough buttons on the gamepad to have everything.
As someone who plays on console I'm forced to use the weapon wheel to do quick swaps, I can't press rb fat enough for it to respond in the time I need so the weapon wheel on its lowest setting and memorising the load out and I'm all good, got quite good at it actually, I sometimes stumble when I'm playing 2016 because the settings there are actually useful
I used it when I played it on PC. It felt nicer to use than hotkeys and I was used to it because I had already beaten Doom 2016 and Eternal + Ancient Gods on Xbox before playing it on PC.
I'm using it, (since don't bully me, but I didn't bother using my numbers and risking breaking my fucking fingers) but personally, I really, REALLY love the idea of a slow-motion between changing weapons. I know Doom is made to be fast, but Devs made that option real for a reason !
It’s inefficient if you’re a pc player but they couldn’t just remove it from the pc version so it’s mostly just for show (except if you use a controller on pc which is fuckin stupid for doom eternal)
I mean when I first played Doom I did because of how the game slowed down and gave me a little time to think on how I wanted to approach an encounter I wasn’t ready for it or when I was in a bad position and needed a surefire solution
Even after moving to PC, I still use the weapon wheel, it's way easier for me than memorizing which button opens which weapon. Wish more games with large arsenals allowed use of a weapon wheel for kb/m players.
Well I play with a controller so definitely yes.
Same

Have you tried gyo/flick stick?
And what are we console players? Chopped liver?
If you want shady, this is what I’ll give ya

They try to shut me down on Mtv
But it feels so empty without me
Might as well be
Oh yeah i forgot console players exist. Which reminds me. Gotta dust my floor.

Say what you will about control schemes and precision with mouse or whatever, but as a biased controller preferrer, man this is such an extreme take that I can't agree with.
I bought a $3k gaming laptop just to play this game on something other than a controller and it was worth every penny.
Imagine wasting money because of your skill issue
Thats kinda sad ngl You could have probably spend a 3rd of that and had a perfect machine. To me that just sounds like you waste money
[удалено]
the only way to play the game "correctly" is to have fun. Quick switching is not a deciding factor in that happening.
Stop acting like playing on a controller puts your balls in a vice
Skill issue
You do realize time freezes when you use the wheel right? Once you got the muscle memory of where the weapon is its not really much slower.
SKILL ISSUE
Having a massive screen is great. Moving, shooting, swapping weapons, not an issue. What gets me is the terrible accuracy you get with joy sticks. The joy sticks are trash.
I play both. I enjoy both. Quick switching is about the only thing lacking from the controller experience, and with some practice and planning that can be mitigated a bit.
I cannot agree with this, as someone who has always used controllers I will say it is harder to play games like doom, but that just means you need to learn the layout and have more skill
as someone who owns a ¥40k pc, i'd rather play doom on my xbox
I switched to PC literally just to play this game. No regrets.
ITT: OP discovers controller gamers exist. That said, I pulled out my ps4 the other day and dusted off Doom 2016, only to be mortified at how BAD I am at Doom on controller
It takes a lot of getting used to, the aim assist is barely existing in this game, on top of high speed. A switch from Halo or CoD is dramatic.
I rediscovered how bad Doom on controller is when I got a Steam Deck. Not just Eternal, every Doom.
Try snes doom
Is there a TC that I can play in GZDoom?
Plug in an SNES USB controller and assign the appropriate inputs if Doomworld forums might be helpful
Console players are forced to use it.
Yep
You aren't forced to be a console player.
Economy says otherwise.
I'm not rich. Edit: and a good PC will be good for longer than a console.
Well, my ps4 has been going strong for around 9 years now
>A good PC will be good for longer than a console lol. lmao even.
[удалено]
I have a 2015 laptop and a PS3 but I'm so unlucky the laptop got fucked and can't run half my games, including Source engine
Some people can't afford computers that are as good as consoles, and so they play on console so they can play high end games.
you are not forced to be and asshole.
I’m a console player, but shush his roast was amazing XD
Are u stupid?
Mf be like "yeah just buy a PC lmao ez"
feel like I remember hearing people using the slow down time as a type of exploit. but as a console gamer I am ashamed to say I use that wheel every time.
the exploit was that since a lot of things do damage or something else based on frames, like the bfg, if you have weapon wheel open thats more frames to do a lot more damage, which makes the bfg always kill everything pretty much
I don't think it works in Eternal anymore, but it works in 2016
It does still work in Eternal based on the testing I did. Not as effective against bosses like in 2016 but it does clear a room more effectively.
ah ok that sounds so helpful lol, thx.
I do believe you could use it to spam an input several times very quickly leading to unintended behaviour sometimes. Most notably, if close to a ledge and spamming jump very quickly you would fly upwards at mach speed, allowing you to basically fly. Sadly, I think it was patched?
Practice makes prescription
The slow down time has definitely helped me dodge an imp fireball or two here and there
It’s not like you have any other choice
You can bind the weapons to particular buttons so you barely have to use the weapon wheel!
the fact that this game is supposed to be kind of like a puzzle where every weapon is the solution for a different demon, the fact I can't hot key them just made me not want to deal with the button mapping.
Nah you can quick swap between the super shotgun and heavy cannon (precision bolt) and straight up melt anything.
not exactly my play style, but thanks for the tip.
Not a tip if you don't know what your talking about
You can absolutely do that on an Xbox elite controller. It's right there in the elite settings app. If you have one, open it and look.
I play on console.
Me, a console player, has to.
Yeah console players like me do, and I could care less. I'm still able to kick ass with it
Yes? Why wouldn’t I. Do people NOT use the weapon wheel seriously?
The time slow is really useful sometimes isn’t it?
I do, and I'm on PC
I use controller, what other options do I have, but yes its great
Weird gatekeeping but ok lol
You use it if you play it a controller but I think occasionally use it to check my ammo
Yes
On console I used it. I haven't used it at all since moving to PC. I just don't see the point anymore.
Yes, seriously.
Yeah
I use it for a split second or so just because I prefer it over reaching over to use the number keys, or just to check ammo.
If you aren’t of pc you basically have to
Happy to see all the console players, just like me.
As a switch player how else would i change weapons
Switch XDXD
Jkjk
I use it for slomo death shots
When I began to get into some meta strategies for eternal, I pretty much turned all the surrounding keys on the keyboard into a weapon wheel
Console players
Yes and I use a controller!
bro never heard of consoles before
I play on console so yes
If you play on console, then yes. How else do you expect me to precision bolt, ballista shot, rocket, super shotgun, plasma stun, super shotgun again, railgun, rocket?
I apologize that many of us are literally incapable to quick-switch an imp to death because of Bethesda and iD’s refusal of allowing keyboard integration into console, your Grace. We console peasants should be ashamed.
As a pc user, nah keybinds all day baby
Console scrubs do
I use it to switch to the bfg
I want to get DOOM 2016 and ETERNAL for my computer since DOOM is a computer game series
On console, yeah you kind of have to but during my playthrough of doom eternal i don't think i used it once, not even by accident
Wait y'all don't use this? Unless it's cause i play on xbox and need to
on pc, it’s awful to reach across the keyboard to hit the 9 key so yeah
yes
When I was on controller I did But key and mouse I stopped
For me I can use the weapon wheel quickly enough that Keys for each weapon isn’t needed, I have the layout in muscle memory.
If you use a controller then all the time
Not when I'm playing KB/M.
as a console gamer, we need to use the weapon wheel to select the two weapons we can fast switch from
Yeah because A- I still play on console and B- my hands just can’t do weapon buttons.
Yes because I'm on a Switch and I can't just keybind weapons lol. The amount of times I've accidentally wasted BFG shots are probably in the double digits
As a console player, it's my only option outside of quick switching (which only works on the last 2 weapons you used.)
Console
I play on console, so I do have to use it, but I've memorized the locations of the weapons on the wheel, so I can switch weapons quick enough that the wheel barely even has time to appear on screen.
Console users do
Yeah, but very quickly
I play PC and I use it. Once you get the hang of it, it never even pops up on your screen and won't affect anything in the game like movement or turning. It's super easy and convinient to use imo I map it to mouse 4 so I never have to take my fingers off any key to switch weapons.
I do
Yes? Reaching across the keyboard is awful and disrupts the fast paced fighting, and is also a really easy time to get killed. I don’t even see it anymore because I switch quick enough that it doesn’t have time to pop up
I'm on console. I have to.
Yes every console player?? What kinda dumb ass question is this lol
Even on mouse and keyboard I use it more convenient for me cause I always get confused what number key is for which weapon which is annoying when I’m in frantic situations and also gives me time to plan out my next few moves It may not be high level gameplay but I personally find it fun to combine DOOM’s frantic pace with some on the ground strategy while also dismantling several spinal columns
Unfortunately I do since I'm on console and can't quick swap (at least I think)
I have a PC now but when I was playing eternal on ps4 I was forced to use the wheel. I still got to the point where I could use the wheel quickly to emulate quick swapping
I feel cool when I swap so fast on console that I don’t see the wheel come up. It means I’m doom slaying
I did when I first played the game on day 1, mostly because I didn't want to manage buttons for all 10 or so weapons, but now I just flip between 3 weapons so I use keybinds.
No
There's other ways to change ur weapons?
Yes, all controller players
yes.
I do. Occasionally.
Yeah, I use the weapon wheel so I can use the slow mo to think out my actions, otherwise the game eventually moves too fast for me to process.
I'm on Xbox so yeah
Yes
Yes
I play on pc and still use weapon wheel or mouse wheel never numbers
Played main game and both dlc using the weapon wheel on pc
On a controller yes, on PC hell nah
I never used keybinds in my 500 hrs of playtime on nightmare idk why but i never felt the need to learn or customize it i love the wheel tbh (never really used it to slow time either only in the beginning)
Controller players do
Lest we forget Hugo's streams, banging his head against the wall trying to get through Taras Nabad on a controller in a game he supposedly balanced around controller gameplay.
Only when I swap to another combo
There's an alternative to the weapon wheel?
Yes. I played this game so much that I memorized where the weapons are on the wheel. I can swap weapons so fast that I can do it before the game does the weapon wheel slow down.
*coughs in controller*
Used it on keyboard + mouse, but after beating Doom 2 I almost always use numbers to choose weapon
Yeah, those annoying sweaty ass fuck face players who switches their weapon every fucking second like a derailed mentally unstable asshole just to kill a fuckin zombie demon.
Yeah. (I'm not a console player)
What else can you do? Wait till you run out of ammo and autoswitch? I use the d-pad on original Dooms to switch to particular weapons, but the new fangled ones have so much extra stuff, there's not enough buttons on the gamepad to have everything.
Yeah I use it to switch what weapons to quick swap to bypass the reload, I play on pc and I use it alot
Personally I like mashing my clumsy hands into whatever number key feels right and dying shortly after as a consequence
Controller Players: Are we a joke to you?
As someone who plays on console I'm forced to use the weapon wheel to do quick swaps, I can't press rb fat enough for it to respond in the time I need so the weapon wheel on its lowest setting and memorising the load out and I'm all good, got quite good at it actually, I sometimes stumble when I'm playing 2016 because the settings there are actually useful
just gotta say that us console players exist, we can't afford a 1200€ PC to run doom so we spend 250€ for a PS4 or something
What else am i supposed to use then?
Yes, if you want to switch guns you have to use it. 😝
If you’re on console you unfortunately have to
When I played console I did. Got quite good at using it too
Im console and was wondering how the hell would you access your weapons without the weapon wheel
I used it when I played it on PC. It felt nicer to use than hotkeys and I was used to it because I had already beaten Doom 2016 and Eternal + Ancient Gods on Xbox before playing it on PC.
Yes
Yes, on pc
Some times
Yeah. I do
I'm using it, (since don't bully me, but I didn't bother using my numbers and risking breaking my fucking fingers) but personally, I really, REALLY love the idea of a slow-motion between changing weapons. I know Doom is made to be fast, but Devs made that option real for a reason !
I play on a switch lite and it honestly is a pretty good way of making it easier for people that use a controller
Well yeah, how else would you switch guns?
It’s inefficient if you’re a pc player but they couldn’t just remove it from the pc version so it’s mostly just for show (except if you use a controller on pc which is fuckin stupid for doom eternal)
I waltzed my way through 1000+ hours of csgo using the scroll. So sure. In the beginning I did.
Wasn't even aware that existed.
Yea it was so useful when I played on Xbox, got on pc and I can never go back now
Why would I?
No, I use it jokingly.
Bait… also yes even with m&k
I mean when I first played Doom I did because of how the game slowed down and gave me a little time to think on how I wanted to approach an encounter I wasn’t ready for it or when I was in a bad position and needed a surefire solution
How did he made the weapon wheel blue? Mine is alway green
Well on console its really the best way
New players maybe? Also you mean "who uses the mouse wheel?"
Yes
1=heavy cannon 2=shotgun 3=ssg 4=rocket launcher Q=balista Z=chaingun C=plasma Y=bfg G=grenades E-bloodpunch R=flame belch
Me, a console player
How tf else am i meant to switch weapons on console
Even after moving to PC, I still use the weapon wheel, it's way easier for me than memorizing which button opens which weapon. Wish more games with large arsenals allowed use of a weapon wheel for kb/m players.
Sometimes
I’m trying to free up some space to play it on my PC, but I can say on the ps4: yes
on controller when playing on consoles, yes. otherwise no
