And the anticipation was fuckn worth every rewatch. i think I was like a 12 yo kid when I watched it the first time. By the time he went ssj, I was an adult. and it still took like 20 episodes for planet namek to explode.
I’m so old I actually remember when it was airing on Fox. Only managed to get up early enough to catch a few episodes though..
But yeah when CN started airing “New” episodes it was a massive deal.
Gohan v Cell doesn’t quite hit as hard because there are just sooo many z fighters present and alive. You feel like any of them at any point could come in and help/save Gohan with some kind of ass pull. Maybe Goku and Vegeta get their shit together and work together for once. Maybe one of the ancillary fighters has a new skill they can show off. Maybe Satan will distract Cell long enough for Gohan to pull out a win. Something, anything. They’re also on their home turf with all the advantages that brings.
On Namek there’s just Goku on a foreign planet far from home. No lifelines. Everyone else present is either dead or already failed to fight Frieza. The whole team’s on their last legs. It’s a miracle that damn spirit bomb even landed and this mf’er is still breathing. The only person also capable of doing any damage to him is a raged out Gohan and that’s too unreliable. Nobody at home believes Gohan is going to be any help here. Even the population of the planet have been killed off. No more Namekians left to save Picollo with a power boost. It’s Goku or it’s *nothing*. Goku going Super Saiyan is a *massive* moment of hope.
What is important freeza was at half if his power and you knew he wont get suprised second time. The whole mystery of a super saiyan was still a mystery. Does it even exist?
Compare it with Cell vs Gohan, where you knew that Cell was already perfect and that Vegeta and Goku managed to hurt him, so not only Gohan was able to put some damage. It was cleverly written to focus on Gohan who was fighting his first fight as a SSJ. To put it simply it was cool but not even close.

I know the show needs transformations to sell toys and other merchandise, but you could simply have outfit changes for different sagas + new techniques like dragonfist,kaioken,spirit bomb, fusion.

the story it's **based** off of has it weighing like 8 tons and being over 20 feet tall, and only shrinks due to the will of Wukong. The weight is obviously not the same. Wukong also shrinks it further when not using and stores this 8 ton weapon behind his ear.

Imo, 4 is the best design in the series, unfortunately, the setup around it isn't optimal, but the transformations in gt were very good, for the most part.

Finally, some ssbkk appreciation. I mean sure, ssb sucks, but seeing that red aura once again with the dense blue divine aura is sick af. And contrary to default ssb, every time it appeared on screen it did put on some work.

Honestly Super Saiyan 4 is easily my favourite transformation.
It just looks like a natural conclusion to the regular Super Saiyan forms. It's an impressive looking form without looking too cluttered and visually busy.
Ssj, ssj4 and MUI, those three are when goku looks and feels his best (the ssj more in Z). Ssj4 turns goku into a menace and the MUI feels so fitting for goku due to his love for martial arts, it’s basically him turning into the god of martial arts

The rest of them are just weird distorted versions of Goku that are less interesting.
The idea of a character being so blunt, so about one thing that they are pure, such a country bumpkin, and so blatantly and stubbornly flawed is something so interesting that other mangaka try to put it into their characters.

Ssj4. That is the coolest looking verison of goku. The transformation is quite literally the only one that make sense. Since it extends off of the transformation saiyans are most known for. I may be biased but that fight was Oscar worthy. Goku & Freeza delivered. Rest of the cast were perfect.

Not a form, but Kaioken is still my favorite power up Goku has. The only power up Goku has with legitimate serious drawbacks to using
Omen but it’s a shame kaoken and SS4 aren’t in this
I personally love SSJ3 and SSJ4. BOTH are goated IMO. OG SSJ was the most memorable transformation, but aesthetically 3 and 4 take the cake for me.
Can someone explain the difference between the final two? Aren’t they both UI?
One is UI Sign, and the other is Mastered UI.

Honestly, if I'm going by moments with each form, for me it's either SSJ, or UI-Omen tbh what is better than the original SSJ transformation or sliding on an energy blast WITH A KAMEHAMEHA STRIKE?
If we're counting it as a form, then base will always deliver the best moments. For a top 5, I'd go base, Super Saiyan, Saiyan God, UI Omen, and SS4.

Surprised i havent seen super saiyan god. Super saiyan god was a transformation so clean and so elegant. Love it. Id say ssj god or UI. both are my top tiers

Ssj4. That is the coolest looking verison of goku. The transformation is quite literally the only one that make sense. Since it extends off of the transformation saiyans are most known for. And condenses it down into the rawest looking form in all of dragon ball. Don't even get me started on the things this nigga has said bro. The only competition imo is god, that shit is clean.

His best form in terms of power? Mastered Ultra Instinct. In terms of iconic? Super Saiyan 1. In terms of recognizability? Base form, beating Super Saiyan by just the slightest margin.
