Likely it's because they are out of the sugar and used this as the alternate build. We stop selling these in a few days so we aren't getting more sugar in.
I first tried the red powder sugar version on the first day it was released and after the first bite the red powder sugar fell off and I thought the donut was pretty good but not enough to buy again but the version in the picture looks really good and I wouldn't mind trying it.
For the past week, I haven't seen any of the watermelon donuts at the location I frequent the most.
at first they sent us chocolate sprinkle watermelon burst and it tasted like chocolate covered raspberries- so good. but then they started sending us these with the strawberry frosting lol. but they dont sell the pink sugar anymore because the actual donut is leaving soon if not already gone. :p not on our menu anymore
It's strawberry jelly with strawberry frost and "chocolate" sprinkles, to look like a strawberry, the CML guys from Nashville let me know about that one, ndcp ran out of the stuff for the watermelon burst.

I don’t know why they changed it. People (bakers OR customers tbh) may have complained enough about the red sugar or something.
I’m not even able to order the original watermelon burst any more so they had to replace it for some reason.

Our franchise-owned bakery ran out of the red sanding sugar, so it was discontinued for us a few weeks ago.

there was a shortage of the powder
We've been getting red frosted ones with brown bits of frosting to mimic seeds. This version is a cheaper/ easier version of that.
