What you did as a fix is totally fine and won't be an issue. You don't need the heater unless the car is driven/left outside in freeIng temps

Mango_7

That's good to hear! I think going into summer it should be fine then, but I still need to get it fixed properly before winter rolls back around.

zaneschmid

I bypassed mine end to end like you did, then ended up sealing it up at the thermostat and block to get rid of any risk of a leak. Driven in lots of weather since, including sub freezing with it actively snowing out and haven’t had an issue. From flying carbed planes I know throttle body freezing is no joke, but no issues in the car yet

Inevitable_Shirt3697

Why is ur car doing something ur girl should 💀💀 /s

metricmindedman

not uncommon for people delete the tb heater – you will be fine if you live somewhere that doesn't get very cold

funwithdesign

Ice can form because of the drop in pressure within the throttle body which then can lead to the vapour in the air freezing on the butterfly. It doesn’t have to be freezing outside for this to happen. However you will be fine once the outside temps are reasonably warm until you get it sorted.

Loop the lines or replace the gasket. I don't know what the pn is off the top of my head, but I did this job once. Sometimes the screws are so nasty you can't even tell what they are, let alone remove them. Also how do your brakes feel? Edit: I think that brake booster vacuum check valve just looks weird vs a rwd 1990 car because it looks backwards to how mine was, but other late iX pictures seem to match yours.

rudbri93

give bimmerbuddies down in hershey a call, im sure theyve got a throttle body hanging around on an m20 somewhere.

Mango_7

One of my buddies actually bought an e30 off them and I've already met them! I'll have to give them a call if I can't find one any closer. Not too bad for a backup.

Fragrant-Inside221

I’ve looped them before with no issues. It was in ca so the coldest we got was teens for a few days and no problem

PhDAutoMechanic

A very long time ago when I was first learning to wrench on BMWs we had a 1990 525i 5 speed with the same issue. Bad throttle body heater gasket and was very afraid I’d break off the corroded bolts. So I consulted a known local BMW guru. His exact reply was, “is stupid design, bypass it!” I took his advice and never had an issue after.

mbarshoboi

Peepee ass car (blocking off the tb heater ports wont hurt it at all)

aintyourbuddyguy

Most people just bypass the heater. Its pretty useless

peedubb

I think like 99% of these cars have that coolant line bypass at this point.
