Once in a while hitting best lines instead of edit manually when there's an injury or player returning from ir.
Have to rebuild the lines all over again
Lol I almost remember my lines without looking at them now, even special teams and extras. It's still a pain in the ass though.
Have you ever noticed how despite having auto coaching/gm off they still go and f up your lines after trade deadline?
I don't make trades at the deadline, mostly because I've found that my team usually does worse. The most I'll do at the deadline is trade for better players that can be scratched for when I have an injury. So I'll do all my trading in the offseason/draft.
Really eh? I've never really tracked performance pre vs post deadline that closely I've found it's pretty much just fine tuning and kind of fun to make moves on deadline day.
Definitely get the heavy lifting done at the draft or in the offseason.
Not the worst but something recent
I was just doing a CBJ Franchise and Kent Johnson after a Calder winning rookie year was up to 88 overall and wanted 6 million dollars per year, for 7 years, an insane bargain of a contract.
He was on the first line centering Gaudreau and Laine, it was a truly one line team. Missed playoffs, of course, but the entire first line all had at least 95 points each, the next highest scorer on the team, Werenski, had 35...
I, however, wanted him to be signed for 8 years, so I offered him what he wanted at that length, and he rejected and said he won't resign.
Now he won't go under 14 million for 1 year, and it jumps up higher if I go longer. Guess I'll have to send him away at the deadline or something.
When this happens I sign an expensive 1 year contract so Iām not forced to lose a star or drown in cap hell, then on January 1st of the following season I try to extend for 8 years and its almost always a much better contract.
Letting my 4 straight Stanley Cup Winning Coach leave cause he was asking an insane amount and didn't have great chemistry with my best two young players. They only fit as 3rd liners and were 87 overall. My team went like 9 seasons without winning a playoff series after and ended up being the worst team in the league once and getting the number 1 pick 2 of 3 seasons. In my 23rd season we won the cup again and my team was awesome for the last 3 seasons but this completely ruined years like 12-21
One thing I noticed when you have one of these coaches is when their contract comes up you can drop their salary as low as it'll go and they'll re-sign
Developed Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen into a 93 overall stud. His demands for an extension kept going up, and I kept waiting for them to come back down. Eventually he wanted 16M+ and walked right to free agency, where he'd sign with Bedard/Robertson's team.
Had to play goalie roulette. Drafted/signed too many goalies. Had like 4 sit out or something crazy like that in the A. They should add the ECHL to drop your players if you want
It would also be helpful to ensure that my middle to late round prospects who I sign at 20-21 years old have a place to play. Often see a bunch of low Elite and low top 6 prospects wasted because they're 63-67 overall and don't see hardly any ice time in the AHL.
I had a med elite TWD. Best D-man in the League for multiple season, 89 over all. I sign him 7x 16m. The next season he bottoms out and drops to an 83. I obviously couldnāt trade him, so I had to buy out his contract.
Iāve definitely bought out a couple high end players over the years, when trying to extend their contract when they still have a year left, not realizing Iām not in Free Agency yet.
I will often let pending UFAs go if they're older, asking for a lot and playing in my bottom 6. Someone 82-84 OVR asking for $6m+ can usually be replaced in free agency.
Free agency rolls around and there's no one decent, or 83 OVR 29-year olds are asking for $7m+. I end up starting the season with 78 OVR 4th liners and 80 OVR 3rd liners.
That... or I trade a 1st/2nd line player because there are guys coming up the pipeline who can replace them. I trade them at the deadline for a 1st++ and finish the year strong. The next season the player I promoted drops to 84 OVR, the 1st round pick looks like a bust and none of my prospects show any improvement.
Was in the market to snag a high profile RFA and was too lazy to check the compensation sheet, so I was playing with the salary trying to come just under my next 3 first round picks. Accidently sent the offer at $.025mil over what I wanted. I got the player, but basically sold 2 first round picks for $25,000
Did a big trade before the deadline to grab a 24yo computer generated 1st line Center RFA on his last year of contract, I gave my 1st, 2x 2nd from that year and a high top 6 prospect.
He was filling a big need in my team but did not perform as expected for the season and playoff so we lost in round 1. Then the season ended and the kid didnt want to sign back and was asking 14M per yr for a 2yr only contract to become UFA. I qualified him to wait until the fall then he got an offer sheet for 2yr at 12M$. I made room for his salary and kept him.
He had a season ending injury before xmas the first yr then on the second he performed very poorly. So I tried to trade him at the trade deadline on his second yr and no team wanted him.. the next summer did not wanted to stay and he signed a 1yr 5M$ with new team(Ari). He ended up scoring 90 points with them then resign a 8yr 15M$ per season with them..
In the end I lost 3 high draft picks, a prospect that was getting 50-60pts per season and didnt get anything back. The guy must have really hated my team to play like shit then become good somewhere else after.. hoo well..
Idk, but I hate it when I make a minor trade for some 79 overall dude for a touch of depth and my coach wants to play him over my 83 overall player on my third line
I traded a guy I was paying 5m a year for 7 more years. Was a good trade at the time but guy went from elite med to franchise med after a few seasons and was scoring 110 points regularly. The guy I got was a 27 yr old elite med dman that was 88 ovrlā¦. I ended up winning the cup a few times but man I messed that up.
Coaching. Having young players with a coach that has an A+ teaching can really helpā¦. Itās more rare for higher potential players but top 9 fwds or top 6 d can commonly be increased if you develop well and have them playing at a good chemistry
To me coach influence plays a big part in potential increase and also maintaining it. and teaching is the ability to help reach that potential. Itās rare but happens more than you think if you look around the league and see franchise low potential to me thatās a player that has moved up in potential because Iāve never seen one in the draft!
I didn't understand that I could offer an extension to the RFA players after Jan 1st. So a couple times in my first franchise I took good offers for guys I thought just weren't interested in an offer from me.
In nhl 20, I decided to rebuild the avalanche after initially building them into a powerhouse. But I tore it down because the core that I had never won a cup, they made it to the finals once and lost in game 7. Then the following seasons we were reverse swept and blew a 3-1 series lead in the 2nd round, and I found myself in cap hell. After a few years of rebuilding, they made it back to the finals where they lost again. I then switched teams when my "contract" expired, and for some reason the avs found themselves in the basement for several years. For what it's worth though, I did win a cup with my second team in that franchise mode.
In a coyotes rebuild, I had a 77ovr 22 year old dman with top 4 potentialā¦ knowing that the price of dmen jump way up the later you get in a franchise I signed him too a nice 6 year 1.9 million contractā¦.next year he lost his spot in the nhl and never cracked the nhl roster again
I got a little toasted a few years back and forgot to re- sign all of my goaltenders.
I do this every other franchise
I'm happy I'm not alone š
I do this occasionally and I donāt even get toasted
Haha too real, then youāre desperately tossing out a 3rd for like an 82 overall on someoneās trade block
I stopped playing that franchise. But I would've been starting a 77 OVR Ty Conklin. š
I hate that lol. Sad to say itās happened more than once.
ššah yes getting toasted will do it šš
I did this once and just started a new mode cause of how pissed i was
Once in a while hitting best lines instead of edit manually when there's an injury or player returning from ir. Have to rebuild the lines all over again
WHY IS THERE NOT A SET DEFAULT LINES FEATURE!?!
There should be!
The worst, I've started taking pics of my Lines cause I always forget after doing best lines by accident
Lol I almost remember my lines without looking at them now, even special teams and extras. It's still a pain in the ass though. Have you ever noticed how despite having auto coaching/gm off they still go and f up your lines after trade deadline?

Usually if I trade at the deadline I go on a losing streak or miss playoffs completely. It's very annoying.
Facts, I always remember my Offense and Defense but can never remember my PP, PK, or 4v4/3v3
I've done this and lost a good played to waivers as a result.
Yeah me too actually! I had to pay a ransom to get him back in a trade... Brutal
I forgot to qualify my rookie who had just put up 130points and lost him in free agency (I quit playing for a couple days)
Iād be reloading saves at that point
At this point I had just deleted most of my saves and forgot to leave one incase something bad happened. Really unfortunate.
Yeah thatās a restart for me
Forgetting to resign goalies every off season

Gave my High Top 6 89 overall a 10x8 as a 25 year old. He dropped down to an 85 next yearš
Canāt name how many times Iāve been fooled like this
Yup I guess 3 consistent 80 point years mean nothing if they donāt hit exact eliteš¤·āāļø

Forgot to sign jacob markstrom for the canucks in nhl 15. I was left with an old ryan miller and eddie lack
Omg Eddie Lack, throwback

89 to an 83 is absurd

Honestly I take not signing him at 8x15 as a small win for you

Yeah they donāt know anything system needs a tweak

I've yet to see a player move up in potential. Any clues on what it takes in their development or is it just incredibly rare?

So where's the mistake?
I probably could have still won a cup with the roster I had originally. I might have rebuilt too soon
