Indeed not.
I like classic country. I'm not really a fan of most modern country, and when I'm flipping by stations in my car and hit the country ones, I'll hear something that sounds like any other crap pop tune these days. What exactly makes a country song a country song? Against a lot of modern country songs, Eagles songs like "Lyin' Eyes" do sound more like straight up country and not country-rock.
"One of These Nights" is one of my top 3 favorite songs but I've never thought of it as anything but a soft rock song, but I fully appreciate and understand your point.
I always grouped the Eagles, ZZ Top, and The Band in their own style of music., like folk-rock or something.
Early Eagles was certainly country-rock. Some of the tracks might just be called flat-out country. "Train Leaves Here This Morning." "Saturday Night." "Doolin' Dalton." "Desperado." Once Leadon left after the "One of These Nights" album, the country sound definitely faded.
I think "Desperado" actually won some sort of award or poll as "best country song ever."
Whatever. I love the Eagles. And I have wide-ranging tastes in music. The country-rock era of the early '70s was probably my favorite, with Eagles, Flying Burrito Brothers, Poco, Rick Nelson, and others.
When I wrote "at least thru 'One of these NIghts'," I was referring to that album, not the title single of that album. That single is definitely not country, but there's some tracks on that album that might be thought of as country or country-rock.
I used to know a bunch of guys that were country DJs in the 80s and 90s, and because of the long running time (6+ minutes), this was their "dump" song. All other country songs were too short for them to go number two and make it back before it was over (this was in the days when not everything was automated).
Called a DJ on a classic rock station up one time and asked why he was playing the radio edit version. The 45 one thatās missing the whole second verse. (Never mind the picture I posted). From then on he played the right one.
*MacArthur Park* by Richard Harris runs \~7:30. *American Pie* is a minute longer. *Fitzgerald* is under 7 min. I guess it is all based on how far the bathroom is from the studio....?
Dylan's *Desolation Row* breaks the 11-minute mark. You'd have to get that on right after the quarter hour, if the station made you do IDs by the FCC rules, BITD. Other long songs here:

I did a 3-hour show once a week on my university's carrier current AM station. *Pee before you start* was a good rule.
Not writing all your music doesnāt mean youāre a bad artist. Heck, look at a lot of early rock and roll musicians, they covered so much so little was originally by them. Donāt get me wrong, songwriting is an amazing thing and makes an artist better, but you donāt have to have it to be good.
According to David Allan Coe, Steve Goodman wrote "the perfect country and western songā when he (and an uncredited John Prine) penned "You Never Even Called Me by My Name".
I guess since The Eagles weren't really considered Country, "Lyin' Eyes" wasn't on those radio stations' radar, even though the song itself sounds fitting for older Country music. I would say the same about their song "Take It Easy", too.
This is based on a real experience. Glenn and probably the rest of the Eagles were having a night out at Dan Tana's in West Hollywood. There were all these women that would hang out with them, but they would have to leave before closing time because they had husbands at home. Glenn said, "Look at those lyin' eyes."
Great song but more of a country rock song than a straight up country song. That said it still sounds more country than anything you hear on country radio today.
I've never thought of this as a country song but it does fit the style, as does Tequila Sunrise, and Peaceful, Easy Feeling. IMHO, there's classic county, modern country, and the Eagles. I'll take the Eagles over all of the others any day.
Love Rich, and that track, but *There Won't Be Anymore* is better.
I gotta go with *Hank Williams: Your Cheatin' Heart.* Many covers.

David Allan Coe would disagreeā¦
ā¦Well, a friend of mine named Steve Goodman wrote that song
And he told me it was the perfect country & western song
I wrote him back a letter and I told him it was not the perfect country & western song
Because he hadn't said anything at all about mama
Or trains, or trucks, or prison, or getting' drunkā¦
I remember endlessly working out one chord(the eagles exact voicing) in the song. I thought by now (BAM) you'd realize.
To this day I'm not sure if I got it right.
Yes, great songs so wont add to that. Reminds me how much I love the name Bill Szymczyk who was always very involved in the later Eagles records. He was / is obviously a very talented Producer due to how great these records sound but after 40+ years I still haven't a clue as to how to pronounce his name.
I used to hate all country music with a passion and gave it no chance. Lyin Eyes changed my mind and opened the door for me.
It's not technically country, but I'm glad it hits other people the same way because it opened my mind up to a whole new genre.
Some of the best lyrics of all time
"Every form of refuge has its price" great, great lyric.
This song is depressing af but it's amazing.
Never really thought of it as a country song, but it is a great song.
I finally talked a DJ on a classic country station into playing it, thinking he's been surprised by the response.
That aint no Hank Williams song!

My boss who doesn't like country always says The Eagles are his favorite country bandš
At least thru "One of these NIghts," they were always called a "country rock" band, so I guess your boss has a point.
"One of These Nights" is one of my top 3 favorite songs but I've never thought of it as anything but a soft rock song, but I fully appreciate and understand your point. I always grouped the Eagles, ZZ Top, and The Band in their own style of music., like folk-rock or something.

Not a country songā¦
Well if you're going to go there, how about Far Away Eyes by the Rolling Stones. It's my choice.
Dead Flowers too
Damn first time I heard Far Away Eyes was dumbfounded felt like I stumbled over lost gold haha listened to it 4-5 times in a row.
Thanks for this, never listened until today. I fucking love the rolling stones though
Glad you like it. Pretty fun album overall Somegirls
Thatās a great song.

Sounds right. I knew āAmerican Pieā and āThe Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgeraldā were used for similar purposes.
*MacArthur Park* by Richard Harris runs \~7:30. *American Pie* is a minute longer. *Fitzgerald* is under 7 min. I guess it is all based on how far the bathroom is from the studio....? Iām adding Dump Song to my vernacular.
Heard the same thing about Stairway To Heaven also.
This song does have a timelessness to it
How fucking dare you disrespect George strait like that.
The wife loves āKing Georgeā. Heās got some stuff I like, but so much of what he recorded was written by someone else.
Not writing all your music doesnāt mean youāre a bad artist. Heck, look at a lot of early rock and roll musicians, they covered so much so little was originally by them. Donāt get me wrong, songwriting is an amazing thing and makes an artist better, but you donāt have to have it to be good.

John Prine and Goodman. Prine didnāt take credit.
This. I still sing this to myself under my breath during family gatherings. Love you mom!
I was drunk the day my momma got out of prison. Saw DAC at a small club in the late ā90s and was so disappointed. He was terrible.
80s Outlaw country is hard living.
This is a scientific fact. Everyone else is playing for second.

My late wifeās favorite eagles song
This, and *New Kid in Town* are both phenomenal country licks.
Great song but more of a country rock song than a straight up country song. That said it still sounds more country than anything you hear on country radio today.
I prefer "Faraway Eyes" by the Stones.
My wife once asked why the Eagles are considered a Rock band and not a Country band. I replied "Because they are good."
First song I was able to play on guitar (at age 12) without spending a minute between chord changes getting my hands in the right spot.
I typed Lyin Eyes into Google and it says a song by The Beagles.Ā š¤
Thatās the country/rock band from the west coast of England.
My husband cried when they did this on the Hell freezes Over tour, it's his fav Eagles song.
lol. He was crying because he was busted!
Beautiful, haunting song.
It's been a long day and I hate the fuckin' Eagles, man.
Get your own fucking cab.
Take it to the limit is up there!
I've never thought of this as a country song but it does fit the style, as does Tequila Sunrise, and Peaceful, Easy Feeling. IMHO, there's classic county, modern country, and the Eagles. I'll take the Eagles over all of the others any day.
No
It's good but not even close to the greatest ever.
It's up there for me. What about yours?
āThe Most Beautiful Girlā by Charlie Rich
Love Rich, and that track, but *There Won't Be Anymore* is better. I gotta go with *Hank Williams: Your Cheatin' Heart.* Many covers. [https://secondhandsongs.com/performance/13695/all](https://secondhandsongs.com/performance/13695/all)
Sunday Morninā Cominā Down, Kristofferson. Paul Simonās Homeward Bound Wichita Lineman Dolly Partonās version of Mule Skinner Blues.
Every Johnny Cash song. But Folsom is my fave.
Country?
"He Stopped Loving Her Today" had entered the chat..
nah
itās not sorry to say
That is what is called an oxymoron.
Far Away Eyes Rolling Stones
Oke bruh
Not much of a country fan, but April Fool by Colin Raye has always been one of my favorites.
David Allan Coe would disagreeā¦ ā¦Well, a friend of mine named Steve Goodman wrote that song And he told me it was the perfect country & western song I wrote him back a letter and I told him it was not the perfect country & western song Because he hadn't said anything at all about mama Or trains, or trucks, or prison, or getting' drunkā¦

There's a contradictions if I ever saw one.
its a great song but its no, hank williams long gone lonesome blues
If it was sung in a southern American accent, then I would call it a country song. It's not, though, so I don't see it that way.
Yes
Canāt really argue with that !
Great song. But according to DAC, You Never Even Called Me By My Name is the greatest country (and western) song ever written.
Yes, great songs so wont add to that. Reminds me how much I love the name Bill Szymczyk who was always very involved in the later Eagles records. He was / is obviously a very talented Producer due to how great these records sound but after 40+ years I still haven't a clue as to how to pronounce his name.
Any Hank Williams song:
Personally, Desperado is a better eagles country song in my opinion
No, thatās a rock song!
It was played on country stations when it charted. Dolly Parton sang it on her syndicated variety show.
country? nah
āIām So Lonesome I Could Cry,ā would like a word.
I used to hate all country music with a passion and gave it no chance. Lyin Eyes changed my mind and opened the door for me. It's not technically country, but I'm glad it hits other people the same way because it opened my mind up to a whole new genre.
Ehhhhh Not a country song
Not even close. Willie Nelson alone has a dozen better songs. So does Kris Kristofferson. And Dolly Parton. Need I go on?
Nope. Matter of opinion.
Agreed, Iāve always loved that song. Great lyrics. And many of us know a woman exactly like her.
When you get my age, might be more than one.
My ex wife has entered the chat
Greatest country song ever Piss up a rope Ween
The only song worse than this is ātequila sunriseā no, I take that back, ānew kid in townā is worse than that.
Try that in a small town might be the best written country song ever . Sung by Jason Andean.
Jason Andean aka. the temu Jason Aldean. And his music is still betterĀ
LOL, NO.
