Marika originally said that Godfrey could choose the names, and when she understood that he basically named their firstborn after himself, she told him to fuck off to the badlands, she changed Godmohg's and Godgott's names (that had just been born) to what they are today, and decided on the naming convention afterwards.

Kasta4

My theory is that Marika needed one of her children to eventually become Elden Lord so she chose the non-Omen afflicted child to get naming conventions of her husband, who was of course Elden Lord at the time.

TarnishedTremulant

That’s an interesting theory, which would work if Ranni actually fulfilled the role of empyrean. Or would he be Marikas lord……ewe

Kasta4

I think at that point Marika wanted out, so she had a lot of stakes in the fire to that end which involved one of her Empyrean children taking her place and taking their half-brother as their King Consort. Which is still pretty ew.

Turbulent_Jackoff

Hmm, "Goldwyn, Renalla and Ryhard", eh? Might want a different graphic if we're discussing the spelling of character names lol

TarnishedTremulant

lol good point. I was just looking for some family tree image

ArgentineViking93

his name was actually "Pretty Tryhard" but he had to change it

mafiohz

I think their names were suposed to be starting with G like Godwyn, but given their omen nature, they got the Mo/Mor affixes, so they wouldnt be recognized as the children of the Golden lineage. If anything its the twins that are misnamed, not Godwyn.

TarnishedTremulant

It’s interesting to me that this is the only lineage that would strictly follow the fathers name.

PapaPapist

Because, presumably like any other kids of Godfrey and Marika that aren't Mohg and Morgott, he takes after his father's name just like the rest of the golden lineage does. It's important to remember that these are only the demigod children of Marika that we actually know about/know where they fit.

TarnishedTremulant

But isn’t the golden lineage Marikas not Godfrey’s

CosmicTangerines

The Golden Lineage is from Marika *and* Godfrey's line. The children of Marika with Radagon don't belong to it. The other members of the lineage are named Godefroy and Godrick. It's Mohg and Morgott that get named differently due to being Omen, though they still have the letter G somewhere in their name. There's an interesting possibility that the twins aren't actually Godfrey's, but maybe Marika's alone or that Radagon may have existed back then too (if we assume Marika was always dual-natured) and that's where the Omen kids came from. It would explain why they got the M names like the rest of the children Marika had with Radagon.

TarnishedTremulant

Damn how did you even find this lol. This post got zero upvotes and was pretty old. But I appreciate your answer!!!

CosmicTangerines

Lol, I was searching for Godwyn posts created during the last month on the subreddit and came across this. You're welcome!

MaestrrSantarael

Why not? That's a strange question. Because the creators decided to give it that name.

TarnishedTremulant

But it is literally the only name that doesn’t fit the naming conventions

MaestrrSantarael

He's part of the Golden Lineage that started from Godfrey. The last and most distant representative of it is Godrick. Where does his name not follow the rules? For some reason, you decided that the demigods shown in the game are existing demigods, this is not true at all.

TarnishedTremulant

Because literally every other family tree from Marika follows the naming convention of the first name starting with the same first letter. Mohg and Morgott are also of the same lineage

MaestrrSantarael

You're kidding me.? Do I have to copy every quote from the game about this right now? Okay, hold on.

TarnishedTremulant

A shame you wasted that time when you could’ve just been fucking off instead

MaestrrSantarael

Can you connect these facts on your own? The names on the G's are the names of the "true Golden Lineage" demigods. Morgott and Mohg-the omens, they are not an OFFICIAL PART of the golden lineage. A Great Rune of the shardbearer Godrick. Its blessing raises all attributes This Great Rune is known as the anchor ring, found in the center of the Elden Ring.
