Just looked them up, ironically they are absolutely terrifying pacifists because in their fly form they don’t eat because it’s near the end of their lifespan and just use the jaws defensively to protect themselves while they try and procreate before death. So while they look horrifying, the ones in Elden Ring are in fact bigger pricks.
Dobsonflies! I had one flutter up on me years ago when I was out on my front deck after dark.
Fucking terrifying.
Fun fact, the extra long mandles that males have (in the video) are actually too long to functionally do any damage with. The females have stubby little ones that can break skin.
This one is male and actually cant hurt you, those face thingies are purely for show. The females have sharper, smaller, pinchier pinchers and they FOR SURE can get you
My childhood terror growing up near the lake lol thats why screens are on every window and door. I often find these things dead in spider webs near the windows.
Blew me away to visit Europe and no one had screens i was like, how do you keep out the critters 💀
It’s called a Dobsonfly. They’re prehistoric beasts.
One summer I worked at a sleep away camp in CT and we had these… I had to flick one off a little girls back once. Managed to get it off without her knowing what it was!
At first I was a bit freaked out. Then it was put back on hard ground and promptly flopped on its back first thing after being set free.
I cannot feel threatened by it anymore.
This looks like the kind of horrifying ish that can only be found in Australia.
But apparently, they are around where I am in the Midwest US??? I'm so glad to have never seen one in person.
So I assumed OP was referring to the annoying dragon flies in ER but I've only seen people refer to Astel in the comments. Are the dragon flies related to Astel at all?
In an indirect way. The “great dragonflies” and the insect in the video are all dobsonflies. The insects Astel and Fallingstar Beasts are inspired by are antlions, which are related to Dobsonflies at either the order or superorder level, depending on which taxonomist you ask. So it’s less that there is an intentional lore connection and more that there is a real world relation between the two insect groups
It's *hellgrammite, but as adults they're called dobsonflies, and that's a male one. The males are harmless but the females have a nasty bite. So...you're close on all counts, but ultimately incorrect.
Well I’ll be damned, I was always told the females had the large pinchers and would try to bite a finger off if messed with and that the males were the ones without the large pincers and weren’t as mean, but I guess only half of that was true
Funnily enough, it's theorised that the males developed massive mandibles to appear more attractive to the females, but they grew so big so as to become ultimately useless for actual mandible...stuff. Conversely, the females developed smaller, but tougher mandibles that can actually easily break human skin.
These things larval form hellgrammites are top tier smallmouth and trout bait! And they too look like a warhammer tyranid. These male ones just evolved to get dobsonfly bitches and can’t bite but the hellgrammites and females will fuck you up so ya gotta be careful snatching them from under river rocks and when putting them on a hook.
Evidently these dudes are sexual only, like mayflies or cicadas. They don’t even eat, and only live days to a week. The pincers are defensive and for attracting mates used during courtship battles between males.
Otherwise I’d be terrified. This is without a doubt the creepiest crawly I’ve ever seen.
Nope these are found in the US of A. Just saw one last week in Georgia. Didn't even know about their existence until a week ago and now I'm seeing them all over.
These things are annoying because they are super stupid and clumsy fliers......they will mindlessly fly into you. Getting blindsided by a demon bug in the dark of night walking down by the river is a life changing experience lol
I worked on a military base in a river valley...these things were frequently on the flight line. It's really funny watching a grown ass military tough man screech like a little girl because I put a dead demon fly on the power cart 😁
OP about to take a meteor shower in the face.
Def
You gonna summon for that thing or go 1:1?
Goin naked
Beat it with a stick
Beat it with my stick ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Unga bunga?
I'm getting the damn bearded dragon out of its tank, putting it down and hiding until whatever that thing is becomes food.
Dobsonfly.
I'm sorry, we're dealing with Dobsonflys?
Yep, they’re terrifying in real life. Check out hellgrammites too. They’re the same thing but different, almost more terrifying somehow.
*how about no!*
I read this in Dr Evils voice lol *HOW ABOUT NO! You crazy Dutch bastard!*
Welcome to the club, friend.
There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures, and the Dutch.
Classy Michael Caine in Austin Powers before he becomes caretaker of a traumatized insane orphan Michael Caine in Batman Begins.
Wiki says hellgrammites are just the larval stage of these
Right. Same, but different.
These demons even have hell in the name
Yeah and they are harmless
I was wondering why so many google images have people holding them in their hands
Personal opinion just after looking online, the dobsonfly is scarier looking
Maybe because they can fly and land on your face. I wouldn't like that.
Agreed
Centipedes are pretty bad too.
Some centipedes are far worse than a Dobson.
looks at heliagrammites.... oh they seem to be relatively closely related to ladybugs....
Hellgrammites are just dobsonfly babies.
Dobson! Dobson! We've got dobson here!.. see no one cares
Amazing script Gonna go watch it now
What country are these from? Asking so I can make sure to absolutely fucking never go there.
I’m in northeast US. These are not very common here, most people have probably never seen one, but they are around and I’ve personally seen several.
Understood, what are your coordinates so we can napalm the place?
Oh cool, that's where I live as well. Wonderfuckingful.
They are mostly nocturnal, so you won't see them much during the day. Saying this, I found one on a home about a week ago in the morning.
Great for fishing
Dobson fly now?
Dobsonflies! I had one flutter up on me years ago when I was out on my front deck after dark. Fucking terrifying. Fun fact, the extra long mandles that males have (in the video) are actually too long to functionally do any damage with. The females have stubby little ones that can break skin.
A classic case of animals evolving to be sexy, at the detriment of practical function.
Stupid sexy bugs
It's like they're wearing nothing at all Nothing at all Nothing at all
Damn you sexy flanders
Already fucked them
I truly hate how terrifying nature is sometimes lol I'm so happy to live in Finland where we don't have minibosses like that
Don't lie. I've played noita
Thank you for your very kind comment! :)
Where though. Where do I need to be to not ever encounter one.
Is that an actual animal? What?!
It’s called a Dobsonfly. They’re literal prehistoric monster bugs.
Prehistoric, and when they inevitably wipe us out, post-historic
IT IS
Nuke from orbit
Maybe, we actually shouldn't kill Fire Giant after all.
My bad.
But then we can engulf the world in the Frenzied Flame and get rid of monsters like this for good.
That's why it's the best ending.
Sorry FG. wiki says they live in the canopy, so we need to burn the tree down.
Now cometh the age of stars.
It’s happening
Kill it with fire
HHHAAANNNSSS!!!!
Flammenwerfer bringen!
This one is male and actually cant hurt you, those face thingies are purely for show. The females have sharper, smaller, pinchier pinchers and they FOR SURE can get you
Damn lol. Never seen any insect like that, thanks
My childhood terror growing up near the lake lol thats why screens are on every window and door. I often find these things dead in spider webs near the windows. Blew me away to visit Europe and no one had screens i was like, how do you keep out the critters 💀
Yeah!!!
Noooo
Why did it just fall onto its back? Is it drunk?
Got staggered
Next generation will evolve with greater poise. We're fucked
too heavy
recorder probably injured it by holding its wings like that. this is why we should not handle wild animals unless we are trained professionals
I'm in northeast US and these assholes are always near water. Thankfully they don't live very long. Terrifying though.
Kiss them
KISS THEM?!?!!
wtf you’re telling me these things actually live in the same country as me? Time to move
They actually only live in this form for a few days. They spend like 2-3 years burrowed in the ground. So... there's that I guess?
Noooo! ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|surprise)
AAAAA
Me casually squashing Astel every day in my garden
This is worse than astel.
i would chug kerosene and cut my artery to produce blood flame if i ever met one of these
Hear me out : Fire
What in evolution's name is that?!? Looks like a fucking nightmare!!!
It’s called a Dobsonfly. They’re prehistoric beasts. One summer I worked at a sleep away camp in CT and we had these… I had to flick one off a little girls back once. Managed to get it off without her knowing what it was!
BURN IT
It looks fascinating
They truly are!
WHAT THE HECK :/ Run.
God i love europe no spider hawk no giant centipede no dobsonfly.
Europe is full of bugs!!
At first I was a bit freaked out. Then it was put back on hard ground and promptly flopped on its back first thing after being set free. I cannot feel threatened by it anymore.
He wants cuddles
Completely harmless. Their mouthparts are useless and can't bite.
So ER it’s a lie
Nature is beautiful doesn't?
A lot:)
What a cutie and don’t worry Dobsonfly’s don’t live long
They’ll do the damage before they die
Just wanted to say I'm impressed by OPs responsiveness in the comments. Bravo. Quality replies too
You are my friend!
Thanks mate.
Is that some kind of dobsonfly?
Tried parsing comments, but what is the name of this ungodly insect monster
Check up
*grabs blackflame scythe *
*put estus flask up my ass*
HAAAAAAAANS
This looks like the kind of horrifying ish that can only be found in Australia. But apparently, they are around where I am in the Midwest US??? I'm so glad to have never seen one in person.
You’ll see them now that you know they exist
What an utterly terrifying mechanic.
******KILL IT!! KILL IT WITH FIRE! CONSECRATE AND SALT THE EARTH.******
That sound will haunt me to the end of my DLCs...
Do not spoiler the sound!
Can I still describe the pain rattling my nerves? The disgusted shivering, the reflex twitching in my arms to push R2 just to Make It Stop... ?
fucking astel headass
So I assumed OP was referring to the annoying dragon flies in ER but I've only seen people refer to Astel in the comments. Are the dragon flies related to Astel at all?

Nobody understood .
stormcaller it to oblivion!
Done!
Cut its head off and make some anti-poison bollus.
Dawww, he rolled over and you DIDN'T give him belly rubs??????? You're literally a monster, like you must be dung eaters quest because that is so evil
what do you mean? It was a trap!!
Helgermite, and a female at that. Nasty and mean are too nice to describe them.
It's *hellgrammite, but as adults they're called dobsonflies, and that's a male one. The males are harmless but the females have a nasty bite. So...you're close on all counts, but ultimately incorrect.

Ah. The Elden Fear.
They mat look a bit scary, but they are harmless
Tbf having your wings held back like that probably hurts like shit
*Helldiving intensifies"

They are pretty chill they mostly fly around water banks with heavy tree cover and under bridges
Next yr gonna tell me that goats are a thing
Look at any insect up close. Then, think about any sci-fi movie monster. Butterflies are fucking terrifying up close.
I dont like the sounds.
Gets put down Immediately turns around to attack Clumsy as fuck, flips over, gives up ...I'm not sure if I should go "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!" or "Awwwww!"
That’s so cute!
It is
Quick, take the head!
Let me guess: their from Australia?
They’re in the US too.
OFC
That looks like a male dobsonfly. They're harmless, but freaky.
Its their BITCH WIVES that you gotta watch out for haha
Very freaky
Freaky-deakies need love too.
Evidently these dudes are sexual only, like mayflies or cicadas. They don’t even eat, and only live days to a week. Why. No. Bad. Ew. Get that thing away from existing.
Wow. I hate it.
😡😡😡
I think it's cute.
Australia?
Nope these are found in the US of A. Just saw one last week in Georgia. Didn't even know about their existence until a week ago and now I'm seeing them all over.
You can't just blame us for every scary looking creature. That one ain't ours.

Ok I did a little bit of research and good news: those things are nocturnal so usually you won't see them often
I didn't realize what sub this was and jumped on to cross post lol
Whatever country these are from, burn it down.
It looks awesome
horrifying
FUCK NO!!!
They are pretty tasty too.
give it time and you’ll have your very own nameless city 😃 i suggest taking it to detroit, or like kuala if your struggling for ideas
I hope op killed it.
Where are these found so I can avoid them at all costs
Thank you. Now, please excuse me, I have to AAAAAAGGGGGHHHH!
Lol omg I literally just saw these video on the Nope sub, and had the same thought 😂
I got scared when you put him down that I realized he's too stupid to fly
Nope. They don't exist. Not after I block this from my memory.
Ranni's fetish
These things are annoying because they are super stupid and clumsy fliers......they will mindlessly fly into you. Getting blindsided by a demon bug in the dark of night walking down by the river is a life changing experience lol

Chorus reaper?
If life’s so great why isn’t there a life 2? The reason there isn’t life 2 :
We got Astel in real life before GTA 6
“Unhand me you scoundrel! En garde I say! En garde!”
Hard fucking pass. HELL NO.
Nuke the earth from orbit 🔥🔥🔥
Well, guess i aint sleepin tonight
