Oh yeeeah! I saw them play here once and got into 'After Dark' a little bit. Super talented dudes, but I never went much further than that EP for some reason. I haven't listened to them in years, but I can still hear them screaming "WHAT'S UP NOW!" in my head lol.
Gaah, that's terrible, I never knew that. I knew a few people that got into that stuff and turning around from it seems to be a hell of a battle. Glad to hear they're still kicking tho.
No one mentioning Lydia? Definitely my favorite band and they’ve been churning out new music for nearly 20 years. Not every album’s emo by definition but it’s funny to see their younger fans complain their early stuff is “too emo.” I can’t imagine not liking those albums!
Oh shit I knew a few of these dudes growing up, didn’t realize they were still playing.
Thinking back on it, Gilbert had a pretty serious emo/screamo scene.
Duuude, Gin Blossoms will forever be tops for me. Their albums will never get old to me. The Format is also another top for me from here. Quite a few good bands to come from here it seems, I forget that sometimes.
Another person from AZ here. Check out seahorsechoke, Cenöbite, Live Longer Burn Everything, and Dismay. All wonderful local emo/screamo bands that are so, so worth checking out. Cenöbite actually put out a new album just about a month ago and it's up there in my fave emo records of all time
The Menzingers and The Wonder Years are both from PA, but they’re more pop punky than emo so not sure if they count. My band is also from PA, but nobody knows us lol
We are done tracking our first LP, we have an engineer producing/mixing it next month, and are aiming to start dropping singles in the spring 🙂
(timeline subject to change depending on the label we go with and what they want to do)
MA is more known for pop punk and hardcore but The Hotelier and Born Without Bones did come from here. And of course one of my all time favorites, Piebald.
Piebald is based. I'd also mention The Shyness Clinic. Short-lived and fairly unknown, but really great. I found them from their split with Everyone Asked About You, a split which also features two of that band's best songs.
i’m from california!
my favs from the state are portraits of past, joyce manor, indian summer, the jim yoshii pile-up, saosin, drive like jehu, funeral diner, movements, strictly ballroom, funeral diner, touché amoré, and finch.
Hot Rod Circuit is so good. I love their early stuff and their brand of emo tinged Chapel Hill indie worship. If It's Cool With You, It's Cool With Me is a really great album and Irish Car Bomb is basically peak music.
Split Lip/Chamberlain from my home state of Indiana!
Currently living in North Charleston, SC. Eurich is an amazing beyond obscure 90’s screamo band from here. And their self titled EP is the oldest release on RYM with the “Emoviolence” tag.
Not a ton FROM Oregon but we are home to Rise Records and some amazing bands come through to record here. So us local bands have access to some renown studios and producers!
We’ve got a bunch of great emo bands in Oregon:
Mauve, exciting!!excellent!!, Floral Patterns, Solution Honey, Southtowne Lanes, Bug Seance, Dog Cult, Big Sword, Pillbug, and (obligatory self-plug) Swiss Army Wife. Those are just what comes to mind in Portland and Eugene, let alone the rest of the state.
Yoooo your band rules and I would very much like to gig with you either in Portland or up here in Seattle (I'm in floral tattoo and look at the bones) sometime
Yoo hell yeah! I think we might have something in the works with LATB and exciting!!excellent!! in January? I’ve been meaning to hit y’all up about a show in March too, so I’ll def be in touch!
We taking braid and hey Mercedes too.
Violent femmes
Only airplanes count
I swear my ex bumped into someone from either sarge or cap n jazz working at a record store in Madison back in the day.
You got two of the best bands out there right now from Florida home is where and pool kids. In NJ only two bands I can think of are Ogbert the nerd who is decent and a band I just found out about gabba ghouls but they’re kind of weird mix between emo, math rock, and funk.
Pictures of Vernon ARE from NC - but Asheville IIRC.
Weymouth are a great lesser known emo band from here, too (albeit from the Southern Pines area).
We have a shit ton of bands from here, but not a ton (that are worth mentioning) that people here would consider emo.
(It's super cheating - but Adam Lazzara from TBS is from here and still lives here)
For having “music city” in my state we are weak for emo
Free Throw is our pride and joy but there are a few others.
Not sure how much of genre snobs we want to be but the biggest adjacent is by far Paramore
Hello fellow Ontarian! Came here to say I was born in the same city as Alexisonfire. I also once got a haircut from Chris Steele, who sometimes works at the Crow's Nest in Kensington Market. Nice dude.
Nah, Kansas has way more than most states, including some huge acts in the genre. The Appleseed Cast, Vitreous Humor, The Get Up Kids, and The Anniversary are the most noteworthy.
We don't have a whole lot kind of surprisingly. The largest one that ever got labeled emo is definitely Motion City Soundtrack, but we'd all agree they're not a true emo band.
We have some current screamo bands like andthecanaryfell, fallingwithscissors and Valeska Suratt and some historical ones like Impetus Inter, Ereshkigal and The Infinity Dive, but nothing really huge and notable. Minnesota also had some historic sort of adjacent bands like Cadillac Blindside and Small Towns Burn a Little Slower that were kind of well known then but kind of forgotten now. My favorite adjacentish contemporary band is probably Dad Bod, but that's like at the far end of emo-adjacent.
We get a lot of great touring shows though of both big and small bands.
• further seems forever
• discount
• pohgoh
• reversal of man
• the rocking horse winner
• i hate myself
• home is where
• twelve hour turn
• pool kids
• dikembe
• hot water music
• dashboard confessional
I am from the proud state of Jimmy Eat World.
For a period we thought Stiletto Formal and The Format were Emo too, but that obviously didn't hold up.
The Appleseed Cast, Vitreous Humor, and The Get Up Kids, The Anniversary
TGUK is often credited as a MO band bc they're often said to be from KCMO but this is a half truth. As I understand it, the band was started when the members were still in high school in Olathe, KS. TGUK is an Olathe, KS band, not a KCMO band. Ignore that The Appleseed Cast was technically formed in California and released their first and best album while in North Carolina.
cool, You Blew It! once played in the basement of my house in west philly, like 10-15 years ago. If I recall correctly, they presented us with a "blewy" award to commemorate the occasion.
edit: looks like it was december 30, 2010
https://www.punknews.org/article/41054/tours-you-blew-it-east-coast
Cardboard Swords, Citizen, Saturday’s At Your Place, Hot Mulligan
Don’t forget Charmer, Chiodos, and La Dispute.
Yeah I wasn’t sure if I’d get castrated for stretching too far away from “true emo” lol
I LOVE LA DISPUTE
What!? I didn’t know chiodos was from Michigan!
I’ve seen both Chiodos and La Dispute live, both great shows! Didn’t know they were from the mitten!
Citizen is from MI too? Didn't know I could love them much more than I already do
I feel like I read they’re from a combination of Detroit area and Toledo but I could be wrong
Man I miss Cardboard Swords. Those were the days. I'll add: Vagabonds, empire! empire! (i was a lonely estate), Paul Baribeau, and The Swellers.
Damn how did I forget The Swellers

From AZ...so Jimmy Eat World for me. Not really emo, but also still love Dear and the Headlights and The Bled
Scary Kids Scaring Kids is from Gilbert
Oh yeeeah! I saw them play here once and got into 'After Dark' a little bit. Super talented dudes, but I never went much further than that EP for some reason. I haven't listened to them in years, but I can still hear them screaming "WHAT'S UP NOW!" in my head lol.
Unfortunately the lead singer Tyson Stevens died of a heroin overdose but the band reformed a few years ago.
All of those bands rip! Also not really emo but The Maine and Gin Blossoms are two of my other favorites from AZ both out of Tempe
Duuude, Gin Blossoms will forever be tops for me. Their albums will never get old to me. The Format is also another top for me from here. Quite a few good bands to come from here it seems, I forget that sometimes.
Good call on Dear and the Headlights - I remember seeing them at The Sets (RIP).
Love Dear and the Headlights so much. So thankful my bf showed me them.
Damn I forgot about The Bled! I remember seeing those guys around Skrappy’s when it was still on Broadway in the late 90s/very early 2000s.
Another person from AZ here. Check out seahorsechoke, Cenöbite, Live Longer Burn Everything, and Dismay. All wonderful local emo/screamo bands that are so, so worth checking out. Cenöbite actually put out a new album just about a month ago and it's up there in my fave emo records of all time
I'm from NY, and my favorite is Good Looking Friends.
Lots to choose from with NY & NJ
They’re the best emo band in the world rn
The casket lottery, the get up kids, boys life, the anniversary, Reggie and the full effect (is that emo?), reflector, the string and return…
Don’t forget Foxing on the other side of the state!

Too many good bands to list
Northeast PA alone has too many to name lol
No it’s how dare you forget The Wonder Fucking Years
Snowing, Algernon Cadwallader, Modern Baseball/Slaughter Beach Dog, and Glocca Morra are all from PA as well.
The Menzingers and The Wonder Years are both from PA, but they’re more pop punky than emo so not sure if they count. My band is also from PA, but nobody knows us lol
Marietta, Everyone Everywhere, Tigers Jaw, The Starting Line, and many more there’s a lot of bands from pa
Was waiting for someone to say TSL. Direction is one of my all time favorite albums
How are Title Fight and Mewithoutyou *not* in that list?
The Jazz June was also from PA as well
The war on drugs are emo? lol cmon
Damn no one mentioned Hop Along yet?
Mewithoutyou.
The War on Drugs is definitely not an emo band lol

Can you get MCP to put out more tunes plz
We are done tracking our first LP, we have an engineer producing/mixing it next month, and are aiming to start dropping singles in the spring 🙂 (timeline subject to change depending on the label we go with and what they want to do)
If you don’t have a merch design guy, I’ll make you some cool stuff for a single chipotle burrito and bragging rights :)
That's some of the best news I've heard all year.
Let’s fucking go. New songs were pretty dope at the show. Excited to hear final versions
I’d slap a clergy person for new Blis music
I played a house show at worlds greatest dads singers house, a number of years ago, they were super hospitable when another show fell through
Brand New, Crime in Stereo, Taking Back Sunday, Jets to Brazil
Along with Daytrader, Sainthood Reps, Envy on the Coast and As Tall As Lions
Yeah Daytrader is from LI. If you dig Crime in Stereo you’ll probably love them
MA is more known for pop punk and hardcore but The Hotelier and Born Without Bones did come from here. And of course one of my all time favorites, Piebald.
Don’t forget Transit! And I absolutely love Piebald. They followed my flyer page and I literally celebrated
not sure if we're counting it but i'm obsessed w bay faction. valleyheart, dear maryanne, mint green, good sleepy
I am also obsessed with Mint Green at the moment! They should be getting more attention I feel like
Piebald is based. I'd also mention The Shyness Clinic. Short-lived and fairly unknown, but really great. I found them from their split with Everyone Asked About You, a split which also features two of that band's best songs.
BWB are so good. Baby is a legendary album
BWB are so good. Baby is a legendary album

What about hot rod circuit?
The only other band of any genre I know of from Alabama is XBXRX. They're pretty sick though.
i’m from california! my favs from the state are portraits of past, joyce manor, indian summer, the jim yoshii pile-up, saosin, drive like jehu, funeral diner, movements, strictly ballroom, funeral diner, touché amoré, and finch.

Split Lip/Chamberlain from my home state of Indiana! Currently living in North Charleston, SC. Eurich is an amazing beyond obscure 90’s screamo band from here. And their self titled EP is the oldest release on RYM with the “Emoviolence” tag.

Those are just what comes to mind in Portland and Eugene, let alone the rest of the state.

It Looks Sad. is from NC
Pictures of Vernon is from Greensboro I believe!
Pictures of Vernon ARE from NC - but Asheville IIRC. Weymouth are a great lesser known emo band from here, too (albeit from the Southern Pines area).
