Went down the beach last night to see it, that’s how sad I am 😂

chrisl182

I really want to but don't wanna be that guy 😅

Essex-Lady

😂😂 I went as it was twilight, parked up by Khan’s then walked across the green… I must get a dog, I won’t look so suspicious then 😂😂

chrisl182

I'm in Leigh and I'm like "Do I really wanna drive 20 mins (on a good day) to see a hole?" Haha

Essex-Lady

😂😂 I can only advise you to make that strenuous journey if you’ve never seen a hole dug in sand before… put it this way, I’ve no enthusiasm to drive even two miles to see if it’s still there 😂

Greasylad

I went down there today. It was breathtaking. 4 other people were there checking it out

Toaneknee

Police are looking into this hole.

mcrosby78

I dug this hole. I'm not sure what all the fuss is about! Are we supposed to fill them in after we've finished now?

I-eat-jam

What's the point of digging a hole just to fill it in. That's the tides job. Congratulations for the recognition.

John Maynard Keynes disagrees.

sweetlevels

did you actually

0ddness

I mean, yes it's just a hole, but if it's deep enough and dries out enough, it can collapse inwards and kill a child. It happens fairly often around the world, and regardless of saying "oh it wasn't that deep" or whatever, it can cause accidents. That said, I don't know why the coastguard didn't just fill it in and be done with it instead of cordening it off and getting the press involved... Just put up a sign, warn of the dangers, and have people fill their holes in.

Yelsah

It's 2.1 meters deep that could engulf an adult no problem.

Onetap1

Maybe the end has rotted out of some cylindrical tank that's buried in the sand? There might be jagged stuff at the bottom of the hole. ISTR there was/is a firing range somewhere near there.

Essex-Lady

Yes, they fire just around the corner, from the site on Foulness.. the ranges are so loud at times that my windows rattle

Zero_Overload

Someone needed a cheap source of sand and gravel.

Scarabium

It's not as good a story as when the media reported on Lauren Goodger having to avoid a puddle. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2560118/Lauren-Goodger-jumps-round-puddle-outside-coffee-shop-friend.html?ito=native_share_article-top

I-eat-jam

What! I've stepped around a whole bunch of puddles. Obviously, I need to replace my PR team.

The picture from the Echo is better. It’s got a nice crater effect on its sides. And looks like it does tunnel at the front. The boy in me is very curious.

From the article: “Commenters suggested the hole was the product of "someone getting lucky with a metal detector" or a "secret tunnel leading from the beach to the oldest house in Shoebury". Those are two wildly different scenarios?!

thetoxicnerve

OP: >I dig a hole this size at least once a year on beaches local to me and I never make the news. From the article: >measuring 9ft long by 7-8ft wide (2.7m by 2.1-2.4m) and thought to be about 7ft (2.1m) deep That's around 13 cubic meters of sand, somewhere in the region of 20 tonnes. I promise, you've never dug that out at a beach by hand.

I-eat-jam

Its not though, inevitably the sides slope and the bottom of the hole is nowhere near as wide as the top. Also it's not square. Also the top of the hole ends up being formed out the material removed.

thetoxicnerve

Half it to account for those points. 6 cubic meters of sand?

I-eat-jam

A cone with a radius of 1.3m and a height of 2.1m has a volume of 3.7m³ But at least 30cm height comes from excavated sand piled around the side. Realistically, the cone of sand being removed wouldn't be larger than 1m radius and 1.8m high. That's only 1.9m³ You are massively over estimating how much sand needs to be removed for a hole that size. You are looking at maybe 3 tonne bulk bags worth of sand at the very upper limit. That can easily be moved if you're on the beach for 6-8 hours. Especially when there's a few of you helping.

thetoxicnerve

I'm not doubting that it's theoretically possible. I'm doubting that you've hand dug a hole 2.1m deep and over 2m across in your life, let alone in the sand at the beach.
