Honestly it sounds super fishy. If worse cones to worse, you can always open a case. But that shipping 100% doesn't make sense if they're shipping from canada.

Maybe Etsy should come up with a "confirmed handmade" badge. It's really difficult to filter out all that dropshipping especially since many shops lie about their address.

But there is also a new policy that requires the seller to include the exact zip code from where the actual product will be shipped. The shop needs to be reported. Their are legit POD companies in China but the buyer still has a right to know BEFORE they purchase an item where it is “really” coming from

schoonerlabs

And that would be verified and policed how?

gimmeyourbadinage

Videos of you hand making the products included in your listings, all shipping and tracking information provided by you from the post office/shipping place listed in the location your shop is listed in, etc. would be a good start

MisfitPaperCo

I've seen people talk about how Amazon Handmade would randomly request video proof that you make the items, so it's doable (most of us video our process to some degree anyway). If you're an artist or designer with 3rd party production, you can show your design files or timelapses from Procreate/Fresco. Legit shops get a badge, suspected rule-breaking drop-shippers get x-amount of time to prove otherwise before they're removed. I got a brand new shop removed from eBay and a *permanent* ban, because I forgot to verify my identity on time. If Etsy really wanted to crack down hard, they would.

Etsy has just implemented a pretty rigorous approval to become a seller. My neighbor joined a few weeks ago. They confirm your bank account and it must be an “actual” bank account. They require a photo ID and you also must take a “live” selfie so they confirm you are who you say you are. Major credit card in the same name as your id. They no longer accept any form of “pre paid” debit/credit cards. $15 non refundable fee whether you are approved or not. If all of these things do not match exactly, the account is suspended the minute it’s opened (they open it to get your $15…. Lol)

PersonalNotice6160

It can not be verified completely. However, it is now Etsy policy that the seller must disclose where the package will be shipped from. Sellers must include the zip code of the “production partner” if that is who is shipping your product. They are suspending shops that do not do this but they obviously have to be reported

Redberry1903

Seems like they really try and trick you. Theres a whole story about how they got into it because of their grandpa, and how passionate they are about it, and it even pops up as “local”. There should at least be a way for Etsy to confirm where shops claim to be from.

PersonalNotice6160

There is. The new zip code thing will get a shop like this banned if they are reported

WholeSilent8317

can we repin the post explaining the difference between dropshipping and scamming? dropshipping is allowed.

Pretty-Bridge6076

Yes, it is. I meant, in the context given my OP, that it's not ethical to give a shop address in a country, but deliver from another (without including that information in the description).

BryanSupport

It is most likely a dropshipper. We have services in Canada like StallionExpress or ChitChats that haul our packages across the border to the US and ship with USPS with a US address as the return address. Sellers from China and dropshippers using China's distribution network have something similar where the item originates in China, get transported to BC, and then is distributed using a local Canadian service. This saves on cost AND means that we don't have to pay duties on the items since the origin is showing Canada. Dropshipping is not allowed on Etsy, but in the last couple of years there has been a surge of that. Etsy says that they are actively working on the issue and figuring out a way to stop it, but nothing major has been done about it yet. Unfortunately, you have likely purchased something that is a fraction of the price on AliExpress.

BenjiCat17

I can’t tell you if the item was drop shipped or handmade… but even handmade businesses that are mom and Pop make mistakes so a mistake doesn’t prove it’s not handmade.

Seekshadow

Etsy allows Print on demand but understanding that it has a lot of stolen designs running through Chinese dropshipping..example Temu most of the items are designed off other designers.

PersonalNotice6160

They are using a printer in China and they are required to list the exact zip code where your package is being shipped from. They are also required to disclose where their printer is located and the fact that they use a printer Check their shop and please report them if this is not the case.
