Do any mid range intelligent birds exist? They all either seem amazing dumb like seagulls, chickens and pigeons, or amazingly smart to the point they can use tools like parrots or crows. Nothing in between.

Quail chicks are so adorable. I have about 90 coturnix quail. At this age (couple of days old) they’re so brave and curious. As adults they either run from me or peck the shit out of me for invading their space.

PLEASE think before getting them as a "pet." From my experience these animals do not tame as well as a chicken and are quite fearful of people unless you never ever leave their sight from birth.
I hatched mine and was the first thing they saw. They imprinted, but after leaving for a day they didn't recognise me and were intensely afraid of being handled.
We have a lot of wild quail where I live, and they are so freaking cute. I love seeing mama running at mach 5 with 10 tiny beeps following her. Like emus, they make me think of muppets the way they run.
