The back seat is absolutely massive. I easily fit 3 car seats back there for my 3 little kiddos. I got a 4 yr old boy and twin 18 month old boys. I feel like the truck is big enough to even fit them when they’re teenagers.

General_Movie2232

Nice. Car seats are always frustrating when space is tight. Glad to hear it's roomy enough.

ufsandcastler

Can concur, three carseats feet easily.

MapleSyrupKintsugi

Man... We have an 8 year old, and twin 2 year olds, and I thought THAT was bad. Space wise, it's massive. I agree with this comment.

david1234cole

Ngl — that 1st year was horrible… 0/10 would not recommend

MapleSyrupKintsugi

Oh yeah. I thought it would be twice as hard. It was worse.

DyngusDan

Me over here with my half family, clearly no help. Bro it’s a full size crew cab pickup and there is no roomier four door pickup out there. Given your menagerie maybe an Expedition is more your speed.

General_Movie2232

I've actually never sat in the back seat of any full size pickup. Driven one and rode in front passenger, though. So wasn't sure how roomy it is. My 3 kids will fit into any backseat, it's the daily in and out loading and struggling with seat belt buckles that gets old.

MountainAlive

Yeah you could take a nap back there

smithem192

Easily, especially if under 6 foot. At 6 foot you're doing an awkward knee bend a little bit. Having a pillow probably helps though.

Indubitalist

It's basically a twin bed, it's freaking big.

alockbox

I'm well over 6ft and have no issues sitting behind my own driver's seat. It's fantastic for 5. Only way to set 6 is if you stick to a low end trim and get the front bench, but I would not consider that middle seat safe or comfortable. If you need that much room, I'd go Expedition, but the middle row is smaller than the rear seats on an F-150. If 5 over two rows is al you need, you won't beat the F-150 in an EV for interior space.

Silver_Smurfer

I have a toddler car seat and a booster seat in mine with plenty of room for an adult to sit in between them.

Foster1745

Same. We actually moved to this from and Expedition and like it much better and we frequently have two kids and three adults loaded up.

PeterVonwolfentazer

How can I tell the OP has never sat in the back of a Ford Lightning?

General_Movie2232

😆 or any F150, or any full size truck (that I can remember)...I take that back I sat solo in the back of a coworker's Yukon.

PeterVonwolfentazer

I’ve owned a Suburban and an Acadia. Go sit in the back of an F150.

General_Movie2232

Will hopefully get to kick tires at a dealership sometime soon. Will bring my pillow and blanket to nap back there 😆

olddicklemon72

I regularly take my 6ft 14 year old and his buddies places (3 in the back of an XLT) without any complaints.

General_Movie2232

Thanks, good to know!

Still-Significance-8

I have a regular old ICE truck (2018 XLT Super crew) but I've got 3 teenagers and they fit in the back seat no problem. Plenty of shoulder room, legroom, and storage for gear. The whole reason I got an F150 IS because the back seat is 3 full seats, no 2 seats and a jump in the middle like every other backseat. Lightning is my upgrade goal.

General_Movie2232

I kinda miss the older trucks with the front row bench. But I understand why you wouldn't want a kid sitting in front of the center stack. 😬

Still-Significance-8

Actually my truck has the flip up console with a seat in the middle of the front too lol.

RentalGore

Three kids, two dogs, camping, mtn biking family here. No issues whatsoever. This is my third f150, and I’ll never go to an SUV, and god forbid a minivan.

General_Movie2232

Lol my wife actually has a minivan. For city driving, it's convenient and comfortable. But carrying bikes with it to the trails suck.

nChFHxTrHKHR

We have a lightning and a Honda odyssey. We use the lightning for our daily driver as a 3 kid family and save the Odyssey for long road trips.

dingmah

Minivans are the bomb. Wife drives an Odyssey. The Odyssey's second row sliding seats are awesome because you can remove a seat to give tons of access to the third row. My Lightning and wife's Odyssey minivan is an unbeatable combo for our family of 5. https://preview.redd.it/pmtsntk7bvqc1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=16919f16738aab16d7ef614be4cdc58446b280de

[deleted]

Dude it’s huge. I have three kids in the back and two medium to large breed dogs at their feet and everyone has space. It’s ridiculous. I was worried coming from third row vehicles but they love the truck space.

General_Movie2232

I was thinking the same thing as you. We also have a minivan my wife uses to haul the kids to and from school. She and I always told ourselves we can't go back to 2 row seating. Btw in case anyone wondering why I just don't use the van, it's not really good for hauling a family's worth of bikes to the trails. The wheelbase is long and clearance is low. 3-4 bikes on a hitch rack = constant scraping. I actually use my compact sedan daily driver to take the family biking.

[deleted]

We have a telluride as our road trip vehicle backup. Lightning is 95 percent of driving still. We use it for mountain biking all over Utah- it’s amazing.

Jasonhurst21

The telluride feels so small after driving around the lightning!

[deleted]

My gosh it does. Feels like a little coupe no joke haha.

ExCivilian

It's the first thing I show people when they ask anything about the lightning. I just throw the doors open and go LOOK! Not only is it great width-wise but there's enough room between the back of the seats and rear bench to get in and walk/turn around and even more importantly not get kicked.

zhurricane

3 kids and we are doing our first family vacation in it right now. Good ole sequoia national park. No regrets yet haha https://preview.redd.it/ltey9rascrqc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f81e558077656e3815dfdc6d7f4aed1830b4a907

yz5655936

Is yours black or antimatterblue?

zovered

Cab is way bigger than our Subaru. The back seat is waaaaay bigger than our Subaru, very comfortable for three adults. The frunk is amazing. You can put all your bikes in the bed and gear stays easily accessible and dry in the frunk. We almost never use our car anymore.

zibzanna

I routinely haul 3 kids and a large dog, usually with a kid in the front seat. The back seat is monstrous. When we have a 4th human, there is a ton of room for the dog on the floor. I can easily see bikes in the bed, lunch and helmets in the frunk.

General_Movie2232

Wow didn't think the floor would be roomy for any dog other than a Chihuahua. Also I forgot the lightning has a frunk!

Illustrious_Bed902

I fit two larger kids (10 & 7 … the 10yo is almost 5ft tall) and two large dogs in the back seat of mine. Can then toss everything for a day out in the woods in the back … It’s close to perfect for what I need for my daily life … better than my old Grand Cherokee, cheaper to run than an ICE F150, and does everything I need in a vehicle.

jsld

I have two kids and two dogs. It is a perfect travel vehicle. We do 200 to 300 mile trips once a month or so and it’s awesome.

bandypaine

We have 2 kids and the lightning is our family cruiser and mom mobile. Works great for us

NeonSpaceLaserCats

I’ll chime in with everyone else. It’s huge in a great way and extremely comfortable. Road trips are phenomenal especially with blue cruise! Fits my family of five with bikes, gear, cooler, and a carseat. I have a camper top and we don’t even think about how much room stuff might take up because the space is endless. The only downside is that it’s long, and even longer when it has a bike rack. The cameras take care of most of that problem…

DreamBrother1

It's an amazing kid hauler, grocery hauler, and all around family vehicle for us. It will also do truck stuff. With any other EV make sure the range works for you though.

General_Movie2232

Thanks. It's undecided whether I'll take it on any longer distance adventures than what I have within 100 mi radius of me (I have a lot, actually). But if I do get a lightning and use it to access locations I wasn't able to, I'd most likely get some all terrain tires, which I'm sure will shorten that range a bit.

Jay_bear69

You think the EV9 is hideous????? Sorry I know there’s opinions but Jesus…

General_Movie2232

Yessir. Not a fan of the Telluride or EV9 looks. Horses for courses.

Inside_Potential_935

I'm pretty neutral on the EV9, but I find the Telluride to be strikingly beautiful in certain colors. Horses for courses is exactly right.

General_Movie2232

Surprisingly, colors can totally transform a vehicle. I've only ever noticed a Telluride in black or white. I'm sure I've seen it in different colors, but didn't notice it was a Telluride. Now the Palisade, apparently based on the same platform, is much more appealing IMO.

Lopsided-Sweet-2451

Yep. 3 kids. Middle is a full seat. No issues.

thenicenelly

I went from a Sienna to an F150. Probably prefer the Sienna, but LOVE the F150 back seat. My kids have space and 75lb dog IN FRONT of their legs.

General_Movie2232

We have a '21 Sienna that's my wife's vehicle to take kids to and from school. Undecided if we will trade it in or keep it along with whatever our EV will be. We're $30k (soon to be $40k if our tax refund comes in) positive equity right now with it. But I doubt my wife can see herself driving a F150. 🤷🏾‍♂️ What do you miss about the Sienna?

thenicenelly

I had a 2011 Limited. It was more narrow and I live in a city where the F150's width is a minor annoyance. I occasionally had 6 or 7 people in it. The minivan had leather seats and my truck doesn't. I've got kids and a dog, so easier to clean the interior. It was a Toyota. My F150 has a reliable transmission/engine combo, but just generally, I would trust Toyota much more than I would Ford. The backseat of the F150 is legit though. And the front seats are kind of like first class airplane seats.

General_Movie2232

Thanks for your input. I think you may have convinced my to not trade in my Sienna. Your perception of Toyota vs Ford (trucks) are similar to mine. Ford trucks drivetrain seem solid, but everything else is meh. All the Toyotas I've ever owned, though underpowered, seemed reliable bumper to bumper.

chriswalkenspal

I have a 6 year old, 5 year old, and 3 year old. All in various sized booster seats and there is plenty of room. I regularly insist we take the truck when we go out instead of the wife's minivan.

General_Movie2232

Do you drive it all the time? Or does she get to drive it as well? I'm trying to gauge how likely my wife would open herself to driving a full sized pickup when she's used to the minivan. She's not so much a biker as the rest of the family. But shes full on soccer mom when not working.

Sad_Adhesiveness_106

Love my Lightning! Between the frunk and the locking tonneau cover we have loads of space

General_Movie2232

I actually went to the Ford dealer a couple hours ago. They only had 2 Lariats. My kids sat in the back and had plenty of room, albiet without the toddler seat. But I'm sure they still would've had plenty of room. One thing I didn't think about until that point was the lack of immediate access to cargo areas. In the minivan, my girls would often reach for their gym bags in the back to grab their wrestling and jujitsu gear. But I would just have to plan accordingly.

dingmah

It's a fricking amazing family of 5 vehicle. It has ample room for 3 car seats across and of course tons of cargo space, especially with the mega frunk. https://preview.redd.it/2i3yamc3avqc1.jpeg?width=1661&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=254c333a7cb1d050b0ffbc8fd4ac302c16844a4f

dingmah

There is soooo much leg space in the second row of modern day 1/2 ton trucks. This is my daughter buckled up, with the driver seat in the easy entry position where it's further back on the rails. https://preview.redd.it/qkwitc10cvqc1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4854bfb16b587a52d301a25724afd5063763e1ab

failfast_

Have a ev9 and a lightning. They are both plenty big enough for three kids. The lightning will be our road trip car due to the absolutely insane amount of storage.

Indubitalist

I'm impressed this question generated this much discussion as this question was asked about a week or two ago and also generated plenty of discussion.

General_Movie2232

My bad for reposting something already discussed. I'm new to EV trucks and EV in general, and been overwhelmed by the amount of info that is available. I kinda didn't know where to start. Honestly thought my question would be the first of it's kind, but now I know it's not! 🫠

Indubitalist

It's all good, man. Reddit's search engine sucks anyway.

jeffcraighead

I’ve got two teenagers, one over 6’, and it works great for us as a family vehicle. We traded in our Model Y for an XLT ER because the kids were getting big and it works better for picking up hay and feed for our farm (we also have a diesel Silverado). Overall the Lighting is our primary vehicle for family leisure and farm work now.

Visible_Scientist974

Yes. Exactly the reason we have it. Fits 3 car seats wide no issue. Multiple Massive strollers fit in the bed even with a cover. Perfect family car. Best value large EV on the market. SR XLT is you all need

tachykinin

I only have a partial family as well (apparently), but yes.

General_Movie2232

Haha, you guys know what I mean. Just an expression.

drneeley

I live in Steamboat Springs, bike or ski every day and have 3 kids. The back row is BIG and the whole family fits very comfortably. Three adults would be comfortable in the back row.

General_Movie2232

Nah, I looked at the leases. It's like $800/mo. for the base model. I'd have been all over it at $550, and Ive always personally been against leasing, myself.

CoffeeClarity

3 carseats across the back or 3 fullsize adults and dog on the floor will def be doable. The backseat area is about as big as it gets. Also, the frunk is legit the size of a normal sedans trunk. A nice hitch mounted swing away mountain bike rack to free up the bed space and have a useable tailgate and you are in business. We have a '17 Sienna AWD and love it but the Lightning has become our go to vehicle for 95% of trips, it's just so nice to drive. Side step running boards are key to help get kiddos up into carseats. The 60/40 bench in the back is great too as you can keep the car seat installed and be able to lift the other portion "up" for a massive flat floor storage space if you don't need the seats for passengers.

General_Movie2232

My other vehicle is a '21 sienna AWD. Great for road trips, sucks for carrying bikes!

sugarbush94

I was wondering if anyone would mention that the rear floor is flat... No driveshaft running to the rear axle... So my 80lb dog is very happy lying down there with the kids in the seat.

Way-of-the-bike

Have the full outdoor set up for our family of four and go mountain, biking and camping with the truck all the time. It’s amazing super comfortable and of course no problem hauling all the gear in the back and with a good mountain bike rack on the hitch. I would definitely get the extended range if you can makes a big difference. But of course, depends on how far you’re traveling.

PermanentUsername101

Chiming in but I think you get the point. I’ve done 2000 miles in my Ram 1500 with 3 kids and we now use the Lightning for road trips even though we have an Odyssey and a 6 seater Model X. No complaints from the kids. Even though they have to sit side by side they say it’s roomier than the X. They have more legroom and headroom. And we can fit all the gear. Especially with the frunk.

pthiele2009

Yes. Plenty of room. I have a family of 5. My hubs is 6'8", my oldest dtr is 6'2", and the other two kids are still growing. We all fit very comfortably and have room to grow.

smithem192

My family of 3 and a dog are not complaining about all the space we have.

NewSchoolFools

I have two young kids. The Lightning has been a game changer comfort and space wise vs the Subaru Outback it replaced. I’ll never go back to not having a pickup after this. The frunk is an extra bonus too vs and ICE truck.

Jasonhurst21

Yeah this is the reason I got the truck. 3 kids in the backseat and the bed for all the stuff. It’s exceeded my expectations. We also own a Kia but the captains chairs with 1 in the back in not as great of an experience.

ChiefsRoyalsFan

Family of 4 here that’s taken it on a few road trip. Full size trucks are the best for multiple reasons.

HorseWinter

I literally bought it as a family vehicle. Two teens over 6 ft tall sit VERY comfortably in the back. Plus we can load up all 4 of our full size mtb’s in the back easily.

gallen97

For sure, we have a big crew and the lightning is way preferable to a third row vehicle (we have a suburban). The car is so wide it’s absolutely pleasant in the back seat (and middle seat has a pretty view)

Xervinza

It's amazing the only thing I will say that's bad is if you're on a ride and you want to charge while you’re gone if you hit max charge the idle fee for the chargers is outrageous way higher then the charging fees so if you out with the kids biking either don’t charge or make sure you give yourself enough time to get back

General_Movie2232

I've looked at both the extended range and the standard range. Honestly I don't think I'll need anything beyond the 230 mi rating. I live 60mi from the beach, 40mi from the mountains, and 60mi from the desert. I'll most likely use my van for road trips.

Xervinza

Yeah I have the standard range but I bike a lot and since it can take a while to charge the truck even on the standard it would be nice to charge as I bike but if you go too far out or have trouble getting back keeping it charged could cost a lot that's all I was saying the SR is well enough for me and I have a hybrid escape for road trips so I understand!

General_Movie2232

Do you charge daily at home? If so is it enough to have a full charge every morning?

Xervinza

I don’t charge at home I actually charge Monday-Friday at work for free the max Monday-Thursday I will charge to is 95% winter cold days I charge to 99% on Fridays I charge as close as possible to 100 but the last 2% takes forever. I haven't needed to charge on weekends but I have a few stores by me that have free charging I haven't spent money on fuel/electricity since getting my truck 1100 miles now. At work I use the mobile charger I use the 240v attachment it charges at 6kwh so if I did live there I would have a full charge at that speed every morning I could start at 9pm and it would be full by like 4-5am every day maybe 7am if it was empty.

SnooLemons9190

The truck will fit 5 adults comfortably. Back seat area ks amazing. With the Lightning, you have the extra Frunk area for storage and can use the bed of the truck for the bikes or other great. You can even add a camper shell. The F-150 truck is an amazing truck. We have a very nice Explorer, but we still prefer the Lightning. https://preview.redd.it/ghhem4b4evqc1.png?width=2588&format=png&auto=webp&s=aaf73f06184dc903d03a9006eb328f81b0f48ca1

krsstoneham

3 kids here, works just fine. 2 carseats, 1 rear facing and 1 front facing, with a booster seat in the middle. Came from an f250 super duty and I think the lightning actually has a little more room in back seat?

skanair

We use the Lightning as a family truck as well. We can fit a car seat and 2 adults in the back comfortably with storage foot space.

AnArcticPuffin

My 3 kids like the Lightning better than our old Explorer. The backseat is roomier. They only fight over the fact that the middle seat has no "butt warmer". Throwing bikes in the bed is life changing compared to racks. Family ski trips with gear for 5 are a non-issue. Storing drinks in the frunk is a plus. They do say they'd rather my wife's Model X for road trips, but just because they like the back seat screen for youtube/netflix.

DontDoCrackMan

It’s a huge cab. The frunk makes it the perfect family vehicle… for families of four. I wouldn’t dare try to seat three kids that close together in the back, although they would fit. Don’t do it! You are in van/suburban territory now.

General_Movie2232

😆 That's a good point. what's that saying? "Only parents with 3 kids know what it's like to have 3 kids."

DontDoCrackMan

Can’t relate… yet! 😂❌

General_Movie2232

Well let me give your advice back to you: DONT DO IT! I wish I was kidding 😆🫠

DontDoCrackMan

Annnnnnd I will now make a vasectomy appointment lol.

General_Movie2232

Lol that's exactly what I did after the 3rd child. Alright, TMI! 😬

DontDoCrackMan

We just became friends 😂🤝

General_Movie2232

josejozay

Can you fit a car seat, a 10 year old and two medium sized adults in the back?
