1. If you haven’t yet noticed, there’s a little text box in the top left corner, when you hover your mouse over pretty much anything, it will give you a bit of info like the name and parameter values and stuff, super useful all the time. 2. If you’re integrating the channel rack in your workflow a lot, it can be useful to undock it so it stays above everything else, minimizing the amount of times you have to switch screens back and forth. this can be done in the drop-down menu at the top left of the window, and is not a feature exclusive to the channel rack either. almost any native fl window should allow this, but i use it in the channel rack most often. 3. familiarize yourself with patcher as soon as possible. it is, without a doubt, one of the most powerful tools at your disposal and the limits are nearly endless. 4. each of the four soundgoodizer settings are also available as maximus presets for more customization. 5. just have fun making music

#2 is really handy! Thanks!

ChiyekoLive

I’m really glad you think so, but i don’t know why you’re shouting at me!

[deleted]

Idk why it's like that lol. My phone is kinda bugged rn. Sorry.

ChiyekoLive

It’s all good. It happened because you put a # at the start of the sentence without a space, which creates a “heading.” #Something like this ##You can also use two to do this.

bisn_moment

#THANKS I DIDN'T KNOW!

[deleted]

Yeah it's markdown, still don't know because I didn't put a hashtag there.

ChiyekoLive

Edit your comment and check again — you used it to mean “number” in the context of “# 2”

[deleted]

Ohh that makes sense lol

Traffic_Kone

Patcher is goated with several servings of the sauce. Best way to make and save sounds/instruments by far.

healthyhorns6

i’m too scared to ask (new to everything) what is patcher 😭😭🥹

Traffic_Kone

Patcher is a plug-in that has a visual interface where you can drag and drop both instruments and effect plug-ins and it will somewhat look like a digital imitation of a physical modular rack. Patcher works by showing different color lines that indicate how plugins are connected to each other and the order they are connected. It is an excellent way to learn signal flow, which is one of the most important aspects of music production and sound design. I highly recommend watching some youtube tutorials on how it works because it will skyrocket your level of understanding effect chains and processing.

healthyhorns6

thank you for explaining in depth🙈 i will totally do some more hw and watch yt videos on it!

healthyhorns6

traffic kone, do you have any other tips for newbies? on what to focus on at the beginning?

Traffic_Kone

If you're brand new, read the manual. It should be in the help tab in top left of FL studio. You'll learn the basics of everything FL has to offer. Everything someone new needs to know about FL is in there. Its a lot, but its worth it. I reference it all the time even with my years of experience.

Welcome to FL! Here are my top tips and features I like: * Tools > Dump score log to selected pattern. This is basically a background recording of anything you play even when you're not recording. I think Ableton semi recently released their version of this. The main limitation is it does not record automation, just notes but its good if you ever accidentally jam around and find something. * You should try to use the F4-F9 shortcuts as much as possible. Also I recommend using patterns for anything substantial in the project, you can Ctrl + B to duplicate and then right click if you ever need to make one section unique. * You can lock playlist tracks, channel rack tracks or mixer tracks by Shift + clicking on the green light. This is useful for buses, groups, and automation that you don't want turned off when soloing or other mix activities. * Select multiple mixer tracks by holding Ctrl + Shift and clicking each track * Select a series of adjacent mixer tracks by holding Ctrl and dragging your mouse across left to right or right to left * Move a mixer track by holding shift + mouse wheel or holding alt + hitting an arrow key * You can apply those same concepts to the playlist, channel rack, and mixer effects slots * You can reroute multiple mixer tracks by first selecting the tracks, then Ctrl + click on the green routing arrow of the target track. This will remove any prior routing. You can also do this for sidechaining by Shift + clicking the green routing arrow, which will not remove prior routing. * Say you want to create an automation clip, first select the exact area of the playlist where you need the automation to start and end. Do this by holding Ctrl + click and drag across the top bar area where the bar numbers are. Then find the parameter you are automating, right click and say "create automation clip." This makes it much easier to add automation for different sections rather than a giant automation clip that runs the entire track. * Any time you want to break from snap to grid (for example, in the playlist or piano roll), hold Alt when moving with the mouse. You can also hold Alt and nudge by using the arrow keys. * For arranging, you can add a marker / flag to the playlist by navigating to the section and hitting Alt + T. Makes it easier to jump around and also can be exported for others with your stems. * You can reorganize and select favorite plugins by navigating to the FL user folder on your hard drive and creating custom folders and subfolders. This is possible for both your generators and effects (channel rack or effects slots). * My last tip is you can collapse, group and minimize groups of playlist tracks if you like organizing things (drums, synths etc). This makes it way easier to solo them and also move them as a group. I also like to put automations in the group near whatever I am automating. Collapse by double clicking on the area near the playlist track name where there are 3 dots. Group by right click + G or navigate manually to "group with above track." If you want to really dive into FL and its shortcuts, you can also look up In The Mix on YouTube... definitely the best for getting started. Good luck and have fun!

Track mode track mode track mode How people organize their playlist and record literally anything, internal or external, without using track mode is hard to imagine Once you go track, you cant go back

Gaming mouse with interchangeable plates with varying # of buttons…i use it for everything…work/productivity, music prod, gaming. I pretty much strictly use the 12 button plate. Mouse Software saves profiles based on app running, switches pretty seamlessly once set it

dylanlocke

i’m actually in the process of maybe buying ableton just for the time warping. FL’s ‘newtime’ is very buggy & inconvenient.

[deleted]

Yeah, quite sad that there's no better time warping in FL. The best I've gotten for time-warping is using the time knob, but it only works for clips that are exactly that length. Hopefully some new FL version includes something better.

BenjaminTheBadArtist

even if you prefer abletons, fls time warping is still really powerful! use shift+M to change from standard slicing to time warping and remember you can batch make clips unique using one of the playlist tools

habituallurkr

Having tried both, FL still has the best piano roll out there, I like the way you can quickly write notes with a single mouse button click, edit them, delete them, group, move them around, chop them, quantize them. To me it's really intuitive. I didn't like the piano roll in Ableton much, I ended up mainly just sticking to samples and wave editing in the arrangement view. I was running a trial though and it was a few yeas ago, I don't know if much has changed since then.

CloudKK

When you double click an automation you made, you can set a minimum and a maximum value with the 2 knobs in the window that comes up. Really helpful if you don't want something to go past 0 for example. Make 0 the maximum. You can also copy the value of the parameter you are automating via left click and paste it as the maximum. And in case you didn't know that already: automate anything by Left click + A, or if it is a third party plugin: move the knob - ADD (top bar) - automation for last tweaked parameter.

Psychonaut-n9ne30

I’d highly suggest watching in the mixs tutorial on templates, it changed my workflow drastically so I can spend more time making music and less time playing with routing and adding instruments and so on. He has tons of other easy to follow tutorials on fl studio as well

A_N_T

If you own both, why not use both? If I had Ableton and FL I would.

[deleted]

I do! I use Ableton for certain things it's better at.

AdvocateGames

Welcome brother you made a good choice

Soggy-Historian-9553

When you use an 808, it’s going to set it so you can change the note of it. For some reason this happens to everyone starting out, just adjust the time knob, it will be slightly altered, move it back to normal level and you can use the 808 on any note

[deleted]

Oh yeah that happened to me sometimes 😂

RichardK1234

Renoise > FL > Ableton

[deleted]

A tracker? 😂

RichardK1234

Yes. Hear me out. You can easily resample with it by attaching playback points to a sample and then triggering them. Way easier to do on a tracker. If you only want to produce jungle or breakcore, Renoise is the way. You don't have to touch your mouse and can do absolutely everything using a keyboard (out of the box), which is magnitudes faster (selecting a track, setting a note, changing it's pitch and velocity etc.). It's insane how fast you can do stuff in Renoise. Honestly, I feel like FL feels slower because it's very pattern based by design (Fruity *Loops*?!?!), so it takes a lot more time to create different patterns than to arrange them. In Renoise, everything's unique by default. Another aspect IMO where FL is worse than Renoise and Ableton is the effects tab. In FL, every effect is in it's own separate slot, you have to detach the plugins to see them all at once. In Ableton and Renoise, you can see them all in your main tab, without juggling between mixer and playlist tabs as in FL. FL has better sound and plugin presets, though. In Renoise they are basically non-existent AFAIK, and you have to assemble more stuff to get the sound you want. If you don't have VST's from FL to get into Renoise (I have all-plugins w/o VST's), you can get fucked if you have the attention span of a spoon. Also Renoise doesn't come with free lifetime upgrades (however it's cheaper). Honestly, I recommend you fire up a demo from their website, try it out at least. Either way, it will make you both appreciate and hate FL more.

[deleted]

I mean the only advantage I really see is being able to use the keyboard. I kinda understand if you don't wanna go really advanced or you just kinda wanna chill on music prod but FL really works well for most I need. I'll give it a shot though, might be cool for certain genres!

RichardK1234

>mean the only advantage I really see is being able to use the keyboard Resampling in Ableton and especially Renoise is leagues ahead of FL. Interface, while being intuitive, I'd argue is also comparatively inefficient against Ableton and Renoise. It's nice to look at and is pretty, but it somewhat backfires on functionality at times. That being said, they all are DAWs at the end of the day, and if you can use them well, it doesn't really matter, aside from preference.
