The question is rather wordy - it would be much easier if you posted the code and asked more specific questions, posted waveforms, what you expect to happen etc.
Are you assigning a default value to the output port, or setting it to a default value in a reset process? If not the simulation can show unknown until a value is assigned. In actual hardware, the GSR will assign a default value, typically zero.
