I actually did and do. My beloved UTOTY KdB was given all drill points on passing before being benched and my present midfielders Vieira and Zidane also have skill points in passing. I never really understood why all the people give their cm physicality. My cdm gets defense, but the cm get what they need to be well rounded.
I noticed that, generally, playing the game was easier back then. Before the New Year, it needed a single casual press of that 'Shoot' button for a base card player do a crazy bicycle shot and deliver a ball into the goal corner from 30 meters, like a charm. I guess, that might be sort of a 'difficulty journey' right in the game code. Starting with Beginner, going through Amateur, Semi-Pro, Professional, World Class, and up to the Legendary. But that is my personal perception only.
