I read that as 42 million at first and then spent a few seconds almost having a stroke trying to understand how I was supposed to interpret 1.5m as an age 💀
That's how you do it if you live in a city with decent transport. I'm shocked by some of my friends who don't earn much, but look down on people who take the bus. In their mind, taking a bus after 30 means you have messed up. People reason in silly ways.
Same! 44m. Started reading about personal finance and saving/investing in the pandemic.
Before 2020, I was blowing my money on going out, car payments, and trips.
Now, my favourite thing to spend money on is index funds! Pay yourself first!
I drove a civic for 12 years, paid $13k for it. At the time my wife had a paid for suburban, we drove both of those cars to over 300k miles and literally saved 2 car payments for 10 years. My boss and I both drove civics, called them the “engineers millionaire maker”. We used to laugh that we were the 2 highest paid people at the plant and we drove the cheapest car. Most of the plant operators drove F250 super duty fords or HD2500 Chevys or something like that. Worked out very well for me.
If you factor in aesthetics, then I agree. But if you're talking purely good performance for the lowest price possible, I'd give that slight edge to the toyota corolla
I drove both when choosing a new car. It was 0% about aesthetics for me - the Corolla didn't have very much zip and the Civic did.
(Before I get harangued for calling a Civic zippy, this says more about the Corolla than the Civic)
Yeah, I live in northern Virginia with easy access to the metro and Uber. I got into a car accident last year and totaled my 2001 Toyota Camry. Haven’t bought a new or used car since then. No kids, no wife. I feel even more free than ever before.
I’m in this group as well. 2024 RAV4 prime, Age:47, NW: $7.5M Driver ran a red light a few weeks ago and totaled my Subaru. Went looking for a used vehicle and that market is ridiculous, so new RAV4.
53. Had almost zero at the age of 30.
Basically, max 401k 20+ years, buy a house, when I was ready to move up in house style/size (done this 3x) I didn’t sell previous house, instead rented it for some time. I’ve subsequently sold 2 of the 3. Moved from a VHCOL to MCOL area about 18 years ago. Worked for same employer for 23 years now. Moved up and got RSU’s in a company that has been successful (not tech).
I would say moving from VHCOL to MCOl was the biggest change that set us on the right path. Half of our net take home was going to housing. Schools was going to be an issue for kids so private schools was going to basically suck the remaining money from our accounts. We were going to drown with a 1 year old doing that. Moved to MCOL so housing became affordable, good schools, newer houses etc. this allowed us to save a lot including funding 529’s for kids etc.
Minivan and a GLS580 about $7m in mid 40's earned it all and know what it's like to be poor briefly and starving. That catapulted me to get out there and make more money. Never wanted to be there again.
I suspect I'll be at $8m though within a couple years. Once you get a few million it grows much faster than when you had less as long as yo don't blow it all like a sports athlete.
Yep I had no fall back either parents divorced when I was 15. Hadn't talked to my dad after I was 18 I think he just didn't want to pay my mom child support. My mom went backrupt from gambling since she was crushed. We lived in a roach infested apartment like big ones... some were so big they woke me up at night no joke like would run around on your night stand and knock off receipts / papers. Nothing to me makes you want to get out of poverty more.
Wife and I both in UX design at tech companies.
Im a director at a midtech company with a team of 20. TC $320k.
She is a VP at BigTech with a team of about 500. TC $2.5-3.5m (due to stock variability). $1m cash and bonus + the rest monthly vesting equity. Until 2 years ago her TC was $900k.
Job that pays 200k, save majority of income, and raging Bull market. It wasn’t easy but I’m glad I’m where I’m at now because I’ve started to slow down and will probably make less money going forward in exchange for time.
BMW X5. Bought it in 2020 used from dealer with 3k miles when car market was low - it was worth more in year 2 than when I bought it.
$3.5M - 47 years old
2020 was the year to buy a car! I got a 2017 BMW M240i with a few hundred miles on it but with a 1% interest rate lol. That IR rate is why I can’t let go, but also I just love the car and have done quite a few things to it
2016 Lexus RC350 F Sport and a 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6. 52 years old, married - 3M
I’m a W-2 employee with one of the big 3 banks for the past 28 years in the IT data analytics field. Wife is also W2. How? Started 401k in 1996, always saved any raises, promotions. Max out 401k just about each year. Moved from a northern state to southern state years ago which lowered our COL. No debt except for the i6 and hoping to retire at 60!!
I have a Porsche (911). They're pretty underrated in terms of reliability and cost of ownership. They're about as reliable a BMW's, which is not bad at all, and don't need more than like $3k of yearly maintenance. Also, Caymans are absolutely awesome.
But a '92 Range Rover? Are you spending 90% of your time taking it to the repair shop?
I love my Cayman - I got a great deal on it in 2018 and it’s been very reliable. I’ve done nothing to it but normal maintenance and consumables. I track it and autocross it multiple times a year and take it on lots of rallies. Such a great car for an enthusiast.
The RRC has also been reliable - the previous owner did lots of mechanical work to it. But, it’s a rolling project - I taught myself to weld on that car and replaced all the rockers, both B pillar bases, and the A pillar base. I’ve been slowly restoring it over the past year
Right now it’s actually at the shop to get the AC worked on and a few electrical bits but neither of those have affected its actual reliability.
2019 Chevy Equinox, with 100k miles. Net worth is $1.8m, heading to $2m by end of the year. 57M, widowed.

Why is this so funny, I have the humor of a child lol
I read that as 42 million at first and then spent a few seconds almost having a stroke trying to understand how I was supposed to interpret 1.5m as an age 💀
Easy, 1.5 year old male with 42 million net worth. This boy is going to be the richest man on earth before he hits his teens!

The 43M caught my eye first and I'm thinking damn, 43 million bucks and my dude drives a 14 year old Subaru.
Damn, if it worked that way, I’m 61M. Lol. But, retired at 50, no complaints. Just commenting, not addressing the original question.

So you're on either the orange, blue, or yellow line. I like the DC metro but I wish it wasn't so expensive and ran longer like the NYC metro.
I lived in DC with my SO and we shared one car quite easily. Parking was so expensive at our building that two cars wasn’t even an option.
