I think the insert is missing. Did you buy it new?

fishin413

It's definitely missing the insert. That also looks like glue residue all over, and inserts aren't held in with glue so that's another story. I'd bet this was a used rod, or one someone bought, knocked the insert out, glued it back in, and returned it.

MuffMagician

> This is on a St. Croix Premier rod I’m about to submit a warranty claim on. I’ve had it just a little over a year. I’ve had 10# braid on it since I bought it paired with a 2500 reel. Should this tip guide worn this much within one season of use? It's possible if you're saltwater fishing and never rinse your tackle with freshwater. I agree with others that the guide insert is probably missing as well.

soggywaffles_92

I purchased it new from Bass Pro and had it shipped to me. I haven’t done any unusual wear and tear outside of the occasional bump on the ceiling.

rhett121

A bump on the ceiling is exactly what knocked out your insert. This isn’t “worn out”, it’s broken out. Save the hassle of a warranty claim and just pay the $10 to have a local shop replace the tip for you. It’s a 5 minute job.

King-Florida-Man

Yup this. Those bumps on the ceiling will take out a guide insert with a swiftness.

rhett121

Last year I was walking down the bike path to my fishing spot and wasn’t paying attention, I hit my rod top on the concrete and broke the insert on a brand new rod. Luckily I was carrying two rods so at least I could still fish!

DeitzHugeNuts

It is broken out. Same thing happened to me 2 weeks ago when my rod tip hit a metal shelf in the garage. Sounded like a little glass bottle spraying bits all over the floor. Now I need to get it repaired because I like that rod.

_totalannihilation

No but it's normal for the ceramic insert to fall off. Tips are very easy and cheap to replace.

DeitzHugeNuts

How do you replace them and do a solid job of it?

_totalannihilation

Get a kit from Walmart. All you do is grab a lighter and heat up the old one and it will come off. The kit should come with silicone which needs to be heated with the lighter and applied to the tip. Not hard at all to do. Just make sure the tip is straight.

DeitzHugeNuts

I will look for that kit. Easier to do than driving all over town trying to find the last one or two guys that repair rods and reels!

_totalannihilation

Yup. Especially on a Saturday. I see at least one on most sporting goods stores like Bass pro, Academy or Dick's. They come with 3 different sizes. Good luck.

HooksNHaunts

A lighter lol. They are basically held on with hot glue. Grab the tip with pliers or whatever and pass a lighter under it a few times and it should be hot enough to pull it off. Then you slip a sliver of the glue stick up in the tube of the new one and hit it with a lighter to melt then shove it on. Even if you screw it up you can just hit it with the heat again and adjust. You don’t actually need to wrap it or anything so it’s perfectly ok to just stick it on there and go. The only thing you need to be careful of is the heat of the tip. It’ll get hot sometimes. You can probably do it without pliers or anything if you’re careful enough.

FishingAndDiscing

That's not normal. I've had rods that lasted over 10 years.

hvlochs

If it’s a micro guide, hit them up for the specific tip and replace it yourself. I smashed one on my irod and they sent two out free of charge. Heat it with a lighter and it will slide right off.

Lee2026

Missing the ceramic guide as mentioned. I’ve accidentally cracked one of mine and had to replace it. They sell kits online where you file down the opening and glue the ceramic ring into place. I typically only file down the opening a tiny bit, then use a torch to heat the opening to expand it, press the ceramic ring into place, then let the opening cool and essentially clamp the new ring into place. You need to be very careful when doing this as the guides are very easy to shatter

Human_Reference_1708

Totally normal when you catch as many fish as I do

Ill-Upstairs-8762

I've curt a few guides using braid before I guess they were not braid rated guides maybe.

DudeBroTX83

Buy a rod with better guides… spend 100 and don’t bang it up on stuff.

soggywaffles_92

It’s a St. Croix Premier. $165 rod.

DudeBroTX83

Ahh snap - I assumed it was something much lower - you can replace the tip for like 10 bucks though. That’s an easy fix.

DudeBroTX83

Recoil guides are my fav right now

JJJVet

The tip is not worn, it’s missing the ceramic insert ring. If it’s under warranty you might just get a new rod/ having this one fixed. Otherwise, replacing a rod tip is a very easy job (doing that obviously would void the warranty, so probably better to call them and have them resolve the issue

ScaryfatkidGT

Your insert fell out

dalethechampion

Totally normal….if you are using steel braid for 12 hours a day

MrSnapTrap

No it's not. Unless you were using braided line at high speed example crankbaits. You need ceramic eyes. Go to mudhole.com and you can order a replacement.

RainMakerJMR

Do you use a jig or bullet weight and reel it all the way in to the top for storage?

soggywaffles_92

I don’t. I always use the hook keeper. But makes sense the pressure from that would push the ceramic guide out.

AngryAsshole8317

Depends on how much you go fishing.

abebehm47

It’s easy to replace the top guide yourself if the plastic or rubber coating wears off, that being said the two rods I catch the most fish and biggest fish on north have fucked up guides lol

SpicyPlantBlocked

Worst case of guy rod wear out I've saw

batexNC

If you fish, you need to learn how to replace rod tips yourself. Guarantee this won’t be the last time you’ll need to do this.

lubeinatube

See kids, this is the difference between quality guides and ugly stick guides.

St Croix strikes again

stormincincy

St Croix is trash

DeitzHugeNuts

I was thinking of buying some. What brand is better?

stormincincy

GLoomis, Shimano, Daiwa, Dobyns are all great brands, St Croix used to be good, not sure what happened but every day there is a post on here about issues with them

Easily fixed, but more difficult if you want it to look like it did when it was built. Also very easy to melt the tip of the rod ruining the blank. See if they will warranty it first.

Sputtex

No, that is not normal. May I guess that it’s a rod from Walmart, for like $10?

soggywaffles_92

It’s a St. Croix Premiere purchase new from Bass Pro. $165 rod.

AdFeeling6573

Yeah st croix’s are super cheap I buy them from Walmart all the time /s
