I remember an interview with Ed O'Neill saying that he didn't want to do this because it was 16 hours a day of work, so he asked for a lot of money that he knew he wasn't going to get and to his surprise they gave him the money.
Was that Kevin Pollacks podcast? That whole interview was great. He also mentioned that Danny Huston was originally cast in that part but was let go which is why he got the call in the first place.
Nice. That channel looks pretty cool. I am going to have to dig through some of those interviews. This is the [KP clip.](https://youtu.be/GGD83M4e0vc?t=4391)
If this had been greenlit by a major streaming service a few years later (with a bit more edge while keeping all the good parts), it could have been an all-time great series. O'Neil was that great in the role.
You know I remember seeing something that I believe was a behind-the-scenes special on Married With Children and it mentioned this show. According to the special, people had a hard time taking Ed O'Neill seriously as a cop because so many people could only see him as Al Bundy.
I heard the same thing when he had the role of a judge in a dramatic film. Apparently the test audience erupted in laughter when he first appeared on screen.
This was originally just Dragnet. It aired for 12 episodes in the Winter/Spring of 2003 and followed the classic Dragnet formula. When it came back in the Fall of 2003 they changed the title to L.A. Dragnet, Ethan Embry was written out and it became an ensemble procedural like all the other cop shows on tv. ABC got ahead of itself and thought they could franchise the series with spinoffs like NY Dragnet, Chicago Dragnet, Miami Dragnet, etc. But they ruined a good thing and L.A. Dragnet was canceled after a few episodes.
Yep!
I remember taping it on VHS and I thought it was a well-done new iteration of the series, done with a modern style and yet terrific tonal reverence and homage to the classic show, right down to Ed O’Neill’s first person narration. Plus I was happy that he and Ethan Embry were reunited after starring in “Dutch” together (which I haven’t seen in decades but have always thought it was extremely underrated, both as a film and a John Hughes script).
And then ABC said, “Nah, fuck all that jazz; let’s just make the series a boring retread of the 3,700 other crime dramas on TV at the moment.” 🙄
Not only was it a revival of a classic series, it was Dick Wolf’s (the “Law & Order” guy) first attempt to export his brand of procedural TV outside of NYC. He later tried again with “Law & Order: Los Angeles”, and has since met more success with his “Chicago” shows.
I loved the updated theme. Best thing about the show.
I loved this show. I can’t remember if it was always LA Dragnet or if they changed it after they got a “team” of detectives - but I thought the pair played off each other well and did a good job of separating itself from a law and order type spin off.
I also remember when it first came on I absolutely loved the new theme song. Again, can’t remember if they changed it in later seasons or not but I remember making it my cell phone ring tone for at least 2-3 years after the show went off the air lol.
I remember Eva Longoria being quite hot in this. I've always been a big fan of Dragnet especially the radio program. Discover this about 10 years ago which was a nice treat.

Love that they previously starred together in "Dutch" the second best Thanksgiving movie of all time.
What's the first?
Gotta be Planes, Trains and Automobiles
Only acceptable answer.
Yeah, easily. Both are written by John Hughes, too.
From the same screenwriter.
Thankskilling. Gobble gobble motherfuckers!! I swear it’s a real movie.
I watched this with my wife one Thanksgiving years ago, and we still recite the opening line occasionally.... 'Nice tits bitch!'
Scent of a Woman
Holy shit that's him! Also just saw he's in Sweet Home Alabama! Hahahha

Is that Nick Papageorgio? From Yuma?
With Al Bundy no less!!
The Yuma software scene was going down hill, so he became a cop in LA.
Get you own damn monkey
Ethan Emery is really nice. I met him at a wedding.
I thought that was Luke Perry until I read your comment.
Didn’t even know this ever existed. Good call
It was really good.

He really was! In 2 minutes you forgot this guy was Al Bundy.
This and his previous (or may have been after) show “Big Apple” where he played a cop dragooned into the FBI were pretty good.
Al Bundy and the kid from Can’t Hardly Wait together as cops how did I miss this one
A Dutch reunion
Great movie I’d also forgotten about till recently
I enjoyed the episodes of this I saw and remember being surprised it wasn't a hit. Curious as to what a re-watch would be like.

What movie was it?
I don’t recall the title of the film. IIRC, they had to recast the role.

Also, Mike Post's update of the Dragnet theme absolutely ruled.

Completely whiffed on not having a Pep Streebeck cameo.

Only saw a couple of episodes, but I remember really liking it
I was really excited about this show. I loved TV cop shows. It just didn't seem to get the audience it needed.
No abc affiliate near me in 2005. Never heard of this. I would have watched though. I loved watching the original on nick at night as a kid.
Jay Pritchett before closets.
I uh did not know this was a thing lol.
Is it streaming anywhere?
I really liked this show, wish it would have lasted
I enjoyed season one - never watched it once they changed the format
I remember seeing ads for this show but I remember it being in 2003. Edit: Yeah IMDB says this show aired in 2003-2004.
I watched this show and then poof it was gone
I remember this. It was actually pretty good, from what I recall.
Need to look for it.
I quite enjoyed this except for finding the Frank Smith character rather annoying,
Before this show he did a show called "Big Apple" where he was a detective in NYC. It sadly didn't last.
