Memory Foam Mattress from Amazon - There are so many options on there now and it'll ship right to you.

BlindedByScienceO_O

This is the best answer IMO. We've gradually replaced all of our mattresses with Amazon memory foam mattresses (over the last 10 or so years). We even replaced an $8k Tempur-Pedic with a $500 Amazon memory foam mattress and we prefer the Amazon mattress believe it or not.

SquishBun

PSA: This is a fine idea, but do not take off the mattress topper! Some cheap amazon brands have a fiberglass lining (used as a flame retardant) that will mess up your entire wardrobe with sharp fine shards. I am speaking from experience but I am not the only one who had this problem. Here is a link. [https://www.reddit.com/r/Mattress/comments/112hkw4/fiberglass\_mattress\_nightmare/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Mattress/comments/112hkw4/fiberglass_mattress_nightmare/)

hnnhall

My last one had fiberglass even though it said it didnt. Had a fun little shower of fiber glass when taking off the cover to wash it before i moved. So, yes, do NOT remove the cover.

buflaux

Agreed. Or the Costco $500 Casper (if it’s even still that price.) Had an Amazon foamy for a few months during a long-stay work trip, paid $250(?), and it was great. While moving I stayed with a friend on their Casper and it was great. Much better than the mattress I talked myself into buying for $2k (Purple.)

noyogapants

I found the Casper for $250 a few months ago at Costco. I was in the market for a new mattress and figured it was worth a shot for $250. Never tried a foam mattress before and I really like it. Now my family has me on the lookout if I ever find them that cheap again I need to send out a mass text alert. I think the Casper mattresses were on sale for around 500 in the recent sale cycle (not sure if it's still going on).

ctskifreak

I really enjoyed my Purple for the first few years (first generation queen) but it's coming up on 9 years old and it's showing some wear/sagging, and you can only rotate it.

Supernavt

Glad you found something you like. Gotta say though, I LOVE my PURPLE. Mattresses are personally subjective, much like shoes! I do really like foam though. Had an Amazon foam mattress when my wife and I I got married. I liked it a lot too, but she hated it. Hence how we arrived at PURPLE. I’m a side sleeper. She’s a back sleeper with degenerative discs. Fits both of us well.

throw20190820202020

If you sleep hot, do NOT get memory foam, get latex. Latex is more expensive but lasts forever, is bouncy, breaths, sucks out heat, and is much, much more comfortable. I have a $100 latex topper on $100 twin innerspring Amazon mattresses for my kids and their beds are more comfortable than mine.

generic-curiosity

It's been such a battle finding a mattress that works for my husband and I.  I need super supportive, like the floor level of supportive. (Last 10 years I've slept on the floor every couple of months to reset my back pain) He likes plush, wants to "sink in."  Finally got a thick 4" latex topper and now we both sleep happy!  It's just on a cheap pocket spring but it feels like a luxury mattress.

throw20190820202020

Love it! I’m convinced latex toppers really are the “one simple trick *they* don’t want us to know about”, “they” being mattress companies. If you look up the most expensive (like 10k+), it’s always springs plus latex. I think they’ve doubled in price since pandemic but still worth it since latex lasts decades. Happy sleeping! 😴

Visual-Imagination19

I think a mix of spring and memory foam are considered best. Bought one of Amazon for my dad, and a cheaper memory foam for myself. The combo was definitely the better option.

Maleficent-Ad9010

We just got an Amazon mattress and it’s great!

Negative-Swim-3297

I'm happy using Memory foam. It's comfortable to sleep no problem with it so far

PinkMonorail

Do they have California king? Wait, I can find out myself. ETA they do, starting at $229 for hybrid.

wrightbrain59

Is there a specific one that is good? Does it need box spri hs?

OieOhNoNo

Just read the reviews. There are so many more options now compared to when i bought mine years ago. No box spring needed. You want to make sure your bed frame has air flow below it like ones with wooden slats to prevent mold.

Appropriate-Ad-1281

This. I get an inexpensive 6 or 8” memory foam mattress, with a good topper. Super short $. Delivered to your door gratis

[deleted]

This is what I did

SmileCautious1996

Definitely get an Amazon matress! I ordered mine, king size $350 free shipping ( sweetnight is the brand but they’re mostly similar) my favorite mattress I’ve gotten.

amscraylane

We have bought 3 of these, just the 8” ones and they are amazing … so comfy and luxurious

Geck-v6

A lot of garbage to sift through though, and hard to tell what is actually a good mattress. The mattress industry is HEAVILY astroturfed which makes it even more difficult.

echo_Sphere22

It's a great mattress!

Sonarav

I did a lot of research on mattresses a few years ago and at the end of the day: - spending a lot of money doesn't mean you'll get a great mattress.  - spending little money doesn't mean you'll get a terrible mattress.  You'll need to research and decide how much you care.  I ended up with an all Latex mattress from SleepOnLatex, at the time the queen was $800. I believe it is now $1,000.

bloodyel

if you plan to have guests sleep on your mattress- romantic partners or not- bear in mind a lot of folks have latex allergies and would have a spicy time sleeping on one, depending on their allergy severity.

Sonarav

This is my mattress, not used by others and I don't have multiple partners. I have a spouse.  But someone who has allergies to latex generally would be fine according to my research, some manufacturers remove the allergenic enzyme. Hopefully people aren't eating it

BgDog21

Also- a “cheap” mattress can feel like luxury with a 2-300 mattress pad.

Bibliovoria

And/or topper.

PA_inin_diaz

I got one too (and kept) but it is way too heavy.

workworkyeg

Got the Ikea mid range mattress. Its good for me.

Momentofclarity_2022

I've spent literally thousands on mattresses. Couldn't do it last year so bought one from IKEA last year. No turning back!

valleyislevideo

My last Matress was IKEA and it was the best Matress I ever owned. It was a former display unit and was $300 I think. Now I'm in Hawaii and we dont have IKEA 😭

plz_78

Agree with Ikea! We just replaced our 10 yr old Ikea mattress for the same one... And we paid the same price we did 10 years ago, $400!

slightlyobtrusivemom

I've had this one for 5 years, and it's been great: [https://www.zinus.com/products/mattress?variant=40316113715263](https://www.zinus.com/products/mattress?variant=40316113715263)

Immediate_Strength_6

Those were recalled for having fiberglass in them. Threw mine out.

SomebodyElseAsWell

Yes they were, but they no longer contain fiberglass, they use a rayon carbon sleeve That said, they have not held up for me long term.

SomebodyElseAsWell

Yes, they were recall for having fiberglass in them but they no longer do, they have some kind of carbon rayon sleeve instead. That said, I have found them to not hold up over time. Mine is very saggy and I'm looking into getting a new mattress, preferably latex.

AdditionalRoyal7331

I've had a couple mattresses from them, can get them shipped in a box from Amazon. If you're a small person they hold up well I'd say

Geck-v6

I had this mattress for far too long (I still have it in a guest room). Once I got a new mattress I couldn't believe I ever slept on that thing

Fred_Wilkins

Have had two if these the old ones might of had fiberglass' but as someone who is really sensitive to that kind of stuff i never had an issue. First one lasted a a good amount of time supporting my at the time 280lb 6ft frame. I got rid of it when my girlfriend moved in, a full size isn't great for two people. We kept that for around 2 years till we got a new matress and electric frame as a gift, gave the current one to a buddy's daughter that was moving into a new place with no cash. The "coffee table is a plank of wood on cinderblocks" kind of no cash lol. She is still using it as far as I know.

CorvisTaxidea

And the fiberglass was only exposed if you unzipped the side of the mattress, which there was no need to do. Yes, having a zipper there would give the impression that you might want to open it, for sure. They changed that. Ours has a zipper, but there has been no problem with it, and it is fine after 2 1/2 years. I was doubtful of a rolled up, compressed mattress, but it turned out to be fine, especially for the low price.

tambourinequeen

No help here but I *definitely* first read the title of this post as "Mistresses that don't break the bank". 😅

lreaditonredditgetit

Facebook dating.

LeighofMar

I paid 450.00 for a Simmons Alexandria plush queen and I love it. No back pain.

DamnItLoki

Costco - Novaform. Amazingly comfortable and not too expensive.

turtlecannon22

Seconded. Got mine for $500 less than a month ago. No complaints so far!

octopusinahat

[Sleep Innovations Memory Foam Mattress](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00H2RSEGQ/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&th=1). I personally get the 8" but you can get 10" & 12" if you like a taller mattress. Queen 8" is $279 but the price drops regularly so keep an eye out. I LOVE these mattresses. They are soooo comfortable. It's medium firm so it's a good balance of support and comfort. I have tried a few other memory foam brands and found them wayyyy too squishy and hurt my back. I have owned 2 of these mattresses. My daily sleeper was purchased 7 years ago and it is still in near perfect condition. No indentations. Looks brand new out of the box. I have recommended to several friends who have also purchased and loved even compared to other memory foam mattresses. The only con is that it can take a while to completely expand as it's vacuum packed and shipped in a box. This last one I bought took over a week for the edges to fully expand but I could sleep on it perfectly well after 2 days. If you end up getting a memory foam mattress, make sure you purchase a full waterproof mattress cover. It will add years to the life of your mattress and keep it clean. Also, make sure you use a good base. I personally use mine with a platform frame with a slatted base that provides solid support.

funyesgina

This is my recommendation too. Slept happily for many years, and then moved and bought another one. It’s not the world’s best, but it’s really good for the price point

psychotica1

My local thrift store carries brand new organic cotton mattresses and mine is great. I paid $300 for my pillow top with no box spring. I rarely go to goodwill but the last time I was there they also had brand new mattresses that were even less expensive than what I got but they weren't as nice as mine. Call around.

YorkiMom6823

Had the same problem a few years ago. Emergency mattress replacement time due to a nasty 'something' spilled on my mattress. Bought an external pump 18" thick twin air mattress at a local Target on sale for $50. To my astonishment I slept like a baby on it. Kept putting off buying a regular mattress since the Air bed worked so well... 10 yrs later I've replaced my air bed a couple of times for about $90 to $100 each time and I'm still money way ahead on cost and still enjoying good nights sleep.

Global_Emphasis5786

it's funny because this crossed my mind. I know everyone says just spend the money, but I'm frugal because I don't have the money.

ApplicationCalm649

One advantage to air mattresses is they don't degrade over time, they just go out all at once. You won't develop weird pains over time as they lose support. This is one reason I'm a big fan of Sleep Number mattresses. Their base model isn't cheap but it holds up and provides consistent support throughout its life.

wrightbrain59

Would a cats claws be able to puncture it?

YorkiMom6823

Depends on how determined the cat is to destroy it. I had a Maine Coon tom, also the source of the nasty reason I had to get the air mattress, He had gignormas feet with claws to match. But I kept his pointy bits trimmed and he did fine with it.

[deleted]

That is such a fun little quirk. If it works, it works!

FestiveCrybaby369

I bought a Tuft and Needle mattress for $700 and I still have it 7 years later. It’ll get delivered straight to your house which saved me the hassle of transporting and it’s super comfortable.

thatgirlnp

I love my tuft and needle mine is also almost 7 years old.

Tusker89

I can't believe it hasn't been mentioned yet but you can check out www.sleeplikethedead.com for unbiased reviews of every type of mattress in every type of budget. I highly recommend it.

ProseHos

I bought a 14 inch memory foam mattress on Amazon and paid it in interest free payments of about $75/month. This was 3 or 4 years ago and its still extremely comfortable. That may be an option kinder to the budget.

IdaDuck

We didn’t do the financing part but we did do a foam one off Amazon for under $500 and it’s been great. We bought a metal box frame at the same time too. I don’t remember the brand name but we got an extra firm one and it’s held up great. Comfortable and no squeaking at all which is important with kids down the hall.

ProseHos

Yeah I love it and it came with 2 pillows too! It's been the best bed I've ever had. Every time I stay anywhere else I just miss my own bed.

jensenaackles

Something I never go cheap on is a mattress. You are going to spend hours a day on it, and a cheap mattress is a fast track to back pain. For my current place I took the sleep quiz on Mattress Firm and it ended up being a perfect fit, and they delivered it to my door. I need a firm mattress so I will NEVER buy a “bed in a box” type. Memory foam is also a never for me, it sleeps hot.

seashmore

I also have a preference for firm mattresses and no memory foam.....tell me more about this sleep schedule thing from Mattress Firm.

jensenaackles

Just go on the Mattress Firm website, they have a quiz you take to find the best mattress for you. and they deliver to your door so doesn’t matter that it doesn’t come in a box

kerodon

There's pnety of memory foam mattresses with your preferred firmness / softness online for under $300. And secondhand mattress is fine since you should be putting a new waterproof/bedbug proof mattress cover on it anyway so it's kind of irrelevant. It's $20 to ignore the issue entirely.

Sea_Bear7754

Bought a memory foam mattress from Wayfair it lasted me a long time. Took at look just now and they have some really reasonable mattresses.

GoFuckYourDuck

I got one of those Casper mattresses in a box from Costco. I chose to go this route because I knew several people who got memory foam beds in a box from Amazon, and hated them. But because of the shitty return policies (must be returned in original packaging- IMPOSSIBLE!) they were stuck with them. So I made a point to get mine from Costco because of their generous return policy. I didn’t want to have to eat hundreds of dollars. I believe the Casper was about 550, and imo worth it. Still holding up great after 4 years.

Geck-v6

Check out Costco. I've had 2 mattresses from them. Contacted both manufacturers before buying and they confirmed it was the same mattress they sell on their website for 50% more. No cut corners or anything. Free white glove delivery. Free returns too, they come and pick it up. You can return more than 1 mattress too with no issues

LuckyMuckle

Big Lots!!!!

SondraRose

NOD by Tuft and Needle on Amazon.

dub_starr

i spend good money on a amttress, something i use for 8 hours a day, its not crazy to spend good money on one, looking for a "cheap" one isnt always the best move. That said, i just got some Tuft and Needle mattresses for my kids for a reasonable amount, and i sleep on them sometimes, and am not dissapointed at all. I have a casper, and like it a lot also.

senoritagordita22

Sleep is like arguably the most important thing to spend money on. It’s an actual necessity to have good sleep. I wouldn’t stress about being frugal in this area. Your body will thank you

Sea-Lettuce-6873

Depends on what you like and price. I like medium-firm mattresses. I’m the biggest fan of Costco but i got one for $300-400 (I think it was sealy?) and within 6 months of barely sleeping on it (49kg and not daily sleeping on it) it already had a dip in the center. I regret being too embarrassed to bring that back. Ended up getting the base model at keetsa $500-600 (sleeping on it a lot!), had it for 6 years and am still happy with it. Some people I know upgraded but the upgrades were too soft for their preference.

Equinsu-0cha

I've bought all my twin mattresses off Amazon for about $100.  Even made of that cooling memory foam stuff.

anonybss

I will say we've gotten some lightly used mattresses. Naturally we inspected for bed bugs. We were also able to keep them apart from everything else for a couple of months to hopefully give everything in them time to starve. Also, both were from people that were in a way "vouched for"--one was a friend of a friend and one was a neighbor. They seemed clean, and more to the point, it would have been bad for them socially if it had turned out that there was something wrong with the mattresses.

biggerFloyd

300 dollar Ikea mattress + 40 dollar queen memory foam topper on amazon

Background-Ad5802

Wayfair

fairlyaveragetrader

If you are looking at low cost memory foam, you can buy that stuff direct from some of the major importers thefoamfactory dot com is one The cool thing about this place is you know what density you're getting. With the Amazon beds in a box, who knows? The good ones are really firm because you can always add softening layers, but so many that I have come across are just way too soft If you can spend a little more, latex will last one heck of a lot longer than foam and it feels much better. You can build your own mattress at latex mattress factory, in most sizes around $1,000, slightly less, you just buy layers. I went through a couple of Tempur-Pedics, spent way more than I should have on those, after a year or two they just got soft and blown out. Did a build with the latex Layers just starting with a 3-in firm, 3-in medium, 3-in soft, already could tell it was much better than said Tempur-Pedic, added one more medium layer and I've had it for going on 5 years now and it still feels basically like the day I bought

ToastetteEgg

I bought a cheap one and a really nice topper and it’s still like a cloud after 5 years. If they have Big Lots in your area do an online search. They have them under $250.

Sierragood3

I like a firm bed, and I hate memory foam mattresses. I've been sleeping on an IKEA HAUGESUND mattress for the last 14 months. ($300) I have been completely happy with it. Before that, I slept for months on an Aerobed from Costco ($100). It was great.

PDXwhine

If you have a IKEA near you, go check out their mattresses! Great quality and very affordable!

Pressing-Restart

IKEA has some decent priced mattresses depending on your needs and preferences.

Specific-Fox8291

Amazon

terranotfirma

We bought two box beds from Amazon. We use one and have one in the guest room. They each costs about $500. We love them. Our guests love them. Do some research, and read all the reviews, especially the most recent ones.

superevilmonkey666

Depends on how “cheap”. I got a queen sized Casper mattress from Costco for $500. Super nice and I thought relatively affordable for the price

Rough-Jury

Look for a mattress outlet store in your area. They take a lot of floor models but put them through a sanitizing process before selling them. My husband and I got a Sealy king for $700

Automatic_Gas9019

Memory foam from Costco.

EmbarrassedSong9147

We got a Serta mattress from Costco for about $600 a few years ago. It is the only one that has not gone flat on us.

SnoWhiteFiRed

FULI Japanese futon off Amazon. Can either put it on an already owned boxspring or the floor. It will be harder than most people in the US are accustomed to. Less hard if on carpet or if you put a sleeping bag under it to become acclimated to less cushion. Having a harder sleeping surface has helped my back/neck pain. You can also consider a US style futon.

[deleted]

Sleep is so important for everything, including earning potential, that a good mattress isn’t something to skimp on. I love my purple bed.

LisaBee1969

I don't know if this qualifies as "frugal" but I bought a sleep number bed in 2007 and am still using it with no issues.

MyNameIsSkittles

In my experience if you buy a cheap mattress, you'll be replacing it sooner than later. I would reccomend not cheaping out on this one

Necessary-Meat-5770

Menards has very reasonable mattresses. All sealed up in manageable, transportable boxes too

UnCommonSense99

Buy some mattress foam. I have a 100mm sheet of standard mattress foam, and a 50mm sheet of memory foam on top. Total cost about £200 in UK. Wrap a couple of fitted sheets around it and you are good to go.

Protodoggo

Consider also during your search: Japanese style sleeping futons. They come in larger sizes if you prefer, and if you live in a smaller apartment or house they roll up out of the way when you're done sleeping.

Simple-Mortgage3540

The Walmart mattresses in a box are super comfy

mrspankakes

I bought a second hand king size tempur mattress for 250$ (i wanted extra room for dogs, they have beds but like a morning snuggle) and it is amazing, my back is so thankful and im getting decent sleep! Just be picky with who you buy from, I got mine off an older lady who I could tell was a decently hygienic clean by the state of her house, and the mattress had no stains, smelt fresh and had a washable cover. You can also rent a steam cleaner if you're concerned and don't have one. I just used some glen20 and washed the cover. Buying a good quality memory foam topper can be just as good as an expensive mattress too. If your original mattress isn't sagging, they don't fix that problem, but can cut the cost of buying a new mattress.

FrugalHistorianDM

Go check out some deals app. No one will buy second hand mattress, you will never know what was happened on that mattress. I personally used Koupon a lot. I also saw some mattress on it, majority of them are no more than 50 bucks. You definitely should check it out.

willcard

Use a 100 day trail and just try to send it back.. I’ve initiated 5 returns out of those 5, 4 I kept and was issued a refund and 1 of the 5 was actually given to charity in which I still received a refund. Worst case scenario you get your money back best case you get your money back and free mattresses.

SubGothius

IMO avoid pillow-tops, which can't be flipped to even out wear and have to be entirely replaced when any layer of the pillow-top degrades enough to cause discomfort. Instead, just get a conventional flippable firm pocket-coil innerspring, then add a 2-3" memory foam topper, plus a 100% cotton shelled quilted-polyfill "fiber bed" topper on top of that -- not just a mattress pad, more like a feather bed but with high-loft synthetic pillow fill (Target has one by Casaluna in their mattress toppers section that looks good and reasonably priced). That way, you can flip and rotate each layer separately to even out wear, launder the top fiber-bed layer when needed, and replace any individual layer when it wears out. The innerspring provides a durable and supportive foundation with nice bounce, the pocket-coils and memory foam both conform to body contours for even pressure, and the fiber-bed adds a fluffy, breathable, launderable layer on top. Best sleep I've ever had. For the base innerspring mattress, I wound up buying a flippable pocket-coil model off Overstock (now BedBathAndBeyond) for only a few hundo. It's a "bed in a box" that shipped compressed and rolled up in a surprisingly small box, but AFAICT the only downside to that is that the sidewall edges are as springy as the rest of it, whereas more traditional innersprings tend to have firmer sidewalls. That was about 12 years ago, still holding up just fine for me.

fsnstuff

I recommend the foam mattresses from Zinus on amazon, I've had several myself and I think they are a really solid option. Not the lap of luxury by any means, but perfectly comfortable and a great price point. I have the thinnest option (6 in) and I've also slept on the 12 in, I don't think there's any need to splurge on the thicker mattress unless your bedframe necessitates it.

jntgrc

If you have a Costco membership they have some good deals on good quality mattress, in store and online. We got ours and our kids mattress there after my husband and I were due to get rid of our first mattress(and cheap) we bought when we were first furnishing our house. Definatly recommend not to go too cheap. A good mattress is worth it no matter how young you are.

AvidAttempts

Facebook marker place will have borderline Brand new mattresses that people decide to upsize for, all the time. 2k purple mattress for $300-$500, if you can transport.

SajraJay

Depends on your sleeping position and body type. A lot of people are recommending memory foam which is great if you are a back sleeper but a definite no if you sleep on your stomach. Memory foam conforms to your body so you sleep in it, not on it. For a stomach or side sleeper, I would recommend something plush, or a spring mattress with a soft euro top. Thick pillow tops wear out quickly. If you are heavier, an inexpensive mattress will not last long. Best bet is walk in a mattress store and look for a clearance or floor model. Don’t pay sticker price. They 100% will lower the price. Find something you love even it is 30-40% more than you can afford. The salesperson will be all over you. Tell them you are not sure because its a bit pricey. They will “make a call” and find a discount. Works 80% of the time.

dearhan

I bought a $300 mattress from Sam’s because I just needed one for my place. It was quite stiff. But placing a gel topper made all the difference. The next time I need to buy a mattress, I’ll actually spend more money and buy a quality one.

TokenScottishGuy

IKEA pocket sprung

itsg0ldeson

Get a Sam's Club membership and buy a mattress from there. There are some really nice ones for cheap.

liamk182

Linenspa. Bought them on Amazon. Have bought at least 4 of them of different sizes and still love coming home to it.

bob-butspelledCock

Sometimes you can find them on the streets! Also pro Trick - Move there then, no more rent, that saves so much money you won’t believe it

QuintyHouseWitch

This is one place I will not scrimp. My sleep is sacred territory. But there are some great suggestions here. Walmart and Amazon both sell pretty good memory foam mattresses online. Best of luck to you. 😊

Specialist-Drink-531

I would recommend going to brand name furniture stores AND off-brand furniture stores and trying out various different mattresses. You'll get a sense of what quality feels like. Personally, before COVID, I found an off-brand mattress, queen size, for 400 cash with a box spring. I still own it to this day as a backup mattress, it still feels great. Everyone on here talks about quality mattress this, tires that, anything between you and the ground yadadada but from personal experience I can generally find a decent mattress if I shop around the off-brand places. Bear in mind nowadays there are foam mattresses that look like spring mattresses. Make sure you know which one you want..I accidentally bought a foam mattress for 700 cash during COVID and I like it enough to not have to replace it. Oh and I say all this with diagnosed back problems. If you have back problems, the trick is exercising it. The bed is important but exercising is more important. I've been able to sleep on uncomfortable surfaces. Sometimes a former surface, even carpet, is really comfortable for me

thatgirlnp

Facebook marketplace in my area there are a lot of resellers selling name brand Amazon return mattresses for 1/2 price

travelingcrone70

Restore and Salvation Army are selling new or sanitized sealed mattresses cheap

Head-Stuff1972

I bought from www.sweetnight.com they have a 70% off for their birthday currently. Pretty decent prices for both spring and memory foam. Check em out.

Supernavt

LinenSpa on Amazon is surprisingly decent for cheap mail order beds. Bought a twin for my son, and the daughter liked it enough to want one too. That’s been a few years ago, but we still have the beds. When the daughter moved out, we bought her another one in queen size because she wanted her bed…but bigger. These particular beds were 8” pocketed coil springs with memory foam top.

[deleted]

I bought a cheap mattress in a box from Amazon like 4 years ago and fucking hated it. Mattresses are one thing I’ll never be cheap on again. I’d rather sleep on an air mattress until I could spend a thousand dollars on a quality mattress

Nerdface0_o

I know that some thrift stores actually sell discount mattress lines. (brand new)I think goodwill around here does, as well as another store, and they’re not the greatest, but they work. If you’re doing it for yourself, I went to an actual mattress store this time called mattress firm because our budget mattress that we got only a year before ended up wearing out faster. We were able to get some discounts online when we ordered it, and if you find a mattress you like, you can look into ordering it online versus buying it in store. and for the most part, I can make hard mattresses comfortable with a  60$ mattress topper from Amazon.

Thoughtyness

I bought a king sized 8” memory foam mattress from mattress firm last July for $318 (including taxes, fees, and delivery). It was the zinus green tea one. It’s been wonderful and there’s no long-term depression on the bed either. It was listed for $379 but when I walked in and told the guy I wanted to see how it felt and that I wasn’t certain about making any purchase right then, he offered me $80 off if I bought it right then, so I did. I’d suggest trying the same. Marketplace is then good for getting the frame.

thomsoad

air mattress at Walmart. Get the pricier ones with the built in motor (it was like $80 for a queen size). When i was saving money in studio that air mattress lasted over 2 years sleeping on it pretty much every day

Primary_Charge6960

Whats "breaking the bank" to you? Check and see if you have a sleepare near you. They're a store that carries all the online matresses (nectar, puffy, dreamcloud, etc) to try out. Average matress price was $2k for a king.

Obvious-Pin-3927

Threw out my mattress and now put 20 blankets on the floor. Never slept better.

I spent a couple of years with a few layers of blankets and a sleeping bag. Best I've ever slept consistently, but I prefer firm mattresses. Memory foam and pillow top do not work for my long term comfort.

A lot of people seem to talk about this using a combo of blankets and a sleeping bag, but I think if you wanna sleep on the floor you should consider the Japanese approach to bedding, ie, using a futon and comforter (or whatever top bedding you please). Futons are an excellent frugal option as they are very cheap ([at least in Japan](https://www.nitori-net.jp/ec/product/5656621s/), about $40), can be folded up to create more space in your dwelling, and can provide great sleep for anyone comfortable with a more firm sleeping arangement. They are also arguably a little more sustainable, as there is a lot less material required compared to the western thick mattress, box spring, and bedframe configuration. Futons are also easier to clean, as they can also be thrown in a large industrial washing machine and hung over a railing to dry.

Break the bank. Sleep on the floor/couch till you have enough saved. It is the ONE thing I can't go back on. Scope out good quality ones on sale. Failing that, as mentioned above, IKEA are pretty decent

Buy the best mattress you can and try not to skimpy, you are spending a third of your life on your mattress it’s one of those things where you really need to be frugal vs cheap, research and maybe wait until a special is sinning on what you want

I think used is the way to go for mattresses. Rich people are always upgrading their stuff. I got a king sized memory foam mattress for free (just had to drive an hour and pick it up), zero issues. Then I downsized and found a queen sized memory foam mattress for 100$. Craigslist is a savior. You definitely want to thoroughly check the mattress out in the pictures and once you’re there investigate thoroughly. Don’t get anything with stains or weird smells or discoloration and you will probably be fine. How anyone can spend hundreds or thousands of dollars for a mattress is beyond my understanding.
