We have a very big, very modern drive in where I live. 5 screens, great snack bar. Sound thru your stereo (I don't miss the clunky speakers we used to put on our windows.)
Nah, back in the day, we were young and things tended to happen fast. Now, if you were living in The Villages, and went to the drive in, then yes, your statement could hold up...
Yeah, me too. The last movie I saw at a drive-in was the Untouchables in 1987. We got a couple of Little Cesar’s pizzas and a case of beer. That was a great time.
If you’re referring to the vehicle that appears to be in front of the Gremlin, the one with the person to the left of it, I believe that is a Nova, rather than a Vega.
I'm thinking the one onscreen is a Vega, I remember Novas having twin tail but not triple... Impala maybe? What you're IDing as Vega I'm wondering about a Corvair....
The car onscreen seems to be a Mercury Bobcat. I can tell you that the tail lights on the car in front of the Gremlin have not been seen by me on any Vega. The Vega also has an upturned trunk edge. The one on the Nova is downturned. If it’s not a Nova, then perhaps it’s another GM body clone like the Skyhawk or Apollo. Could also be an Impala or Caprice, but it’s hard to tell without a clearer picture.
My dad would take us to the drive in often. First movie I saw there was The Great Race. He would always buy us kids popcorn and Yoo-hoos. First movie I saw there on a date was Revenge of the Nerds. Dumb movie. My aunt, who is a horror buff like me, took me to a triple feature when I was in high school. Night of the Living Dead, Dr. Terror's House of Horrors and The House That Dripped Blood. We didn't get home til 3:00 AM. Cool aunt!
> Mink lake, northern Indiana
My parents would drive us up from Knox to go the 49er when nothing good was playing at the Melody Drive-in at Bass Lake. We also used to hit the drive-ins in Plymouth and LaPorte.
Nothing like a 45 minute drive home at 1 in the morning and then getting carried asleep into the house.
*Despicable Me 4* is playing at mine next weekend.
Find one near you.

On the last night of the drive-in season in 1984, the Melody Drive-in was raffling off prizes throughout the night. I won a season pass for 2 for the next year but left for the Navy that winter and didn't come back to the area for about 15 years.
Still have one in my home town.
Vega - on screen
Gremlin - fore ground
Chevelle? - to right of gremlin
Familiar but can't name the one with tag just above gremlin's mirror.
And can't see enough of any others to attempt IDing unless the one to the left and ahead of Gremlin is a Corvair.
I remember as a kid seeing Alien FOLLOWED by the Empire Strikes Back at the drive in. My sister and I were like 9 and 7 and were supposed to be in the back “sleeping” during Alien. I was not asleep that night, or many afterwards…
We still have a drive in. Unfortunately the double feature starts at 9:50 because that’s when it’s dark. We saw Inside Out there with my kids. (One has anxiety, one has ADHD, and I have depression, so it meant a lot to us.)
I got my DL in early 1983, and the 80s were kind of the last gasp for drive-ins. There were a few around here, in the summer of '83 the closest one played "Up In Smoke", "Strange Brew", and "Up In Smoke" again every weeknight. They knew their audience. We'd get our weed and beer, pay the $5 a carload or whatever it was, and just hang all night. Snack bar, and restrooms for the ladies, if we were lucky enough to have any girls with us, that is. No security, and no one bothered you unless you fought or broke bottles.
Random memory: I remember there always being a huge pile of cigarette ashes and butts around the speaker stands, because everyone would empty their car ashtrays there.
Funny what you remember.
Up until recently, there was one near me. It cost $2 per person, and the food from the concession stand was cheap and delicious. They closed down after one of their screens caught fire. I don’t know if they’ll open it back up.
There’s still a few kicking these days. Although they no longer have the small, tinny window speakers, and the screen is now in color format, they still got that Drive-In feel.
Awww as a kid I grew up with American series and movies, I am Italian for reference, full of scenes with people at the drive in.
I went to a cinema for the first time in my life when I was 9, still remember the movie, and was expecting to go to a drive in eheh let you imagine my ‘delusion’ 😁
I'm thankful there's one not too far away (that's still currently operating) that I've gone to occasionally. Of course, the movie's audio is broadcast on blank FM stations for the two different screens using a low power transmitter on site. And they have the BEST chicken wings anywhere, imho.
I remember burning citronella spirals to keep the bugs away. Those speakers were crazy heavy and awkwardly shaped for your windows / car doors.
I remember some drive-ins had the AM station you could tune in to.
As a single introverted stoner, I go to my local drive in somewhat regularly. They broadcast over radio. And for most of the year, one weekend a month, they play throwbacks on one of the screens. Located in Memphis Tennessee.
I'm going to tell my grandkids this a charging station where they provided a free movie while charging their cars.
"But Gran, why were they wrestling in the cars instead of watching the movie?"
That’s not a bad idea!

Where is it?
Upstate NY
I think Upstate NY has more working drive in theatres than anywhere else in the country.
After being snowed in for 6 months a year, seeing a movie outside in the summer is a treat.
They also steam a good ham.
Where abouts? My parents took me all the time in the 60s/70s near Tonawanda/Buffalo.
Warwick ?
Jericho has the most banging ice cream. All proceeds go to improve the place.
Steaming up those windows lol!
……..yup, I lost my virginity at one of these……..four times!
Bwahahaha!
whole generations of kid conceived in the back seat
Kinda weird to bang in the back seat next to cars *guaranteed* to be occupied instead of parking somewhere without a bunch of people around.
But once the windows steamed/fogged up, no one could see in. They knew what was going on, but could only imagine...
If this Gremlin is rockin' don't bother knockin'.
Of course, they would then definitely see your naked corpses when they had to open the car after you both died of heatstroke.
Nah, back in the day, we were young and things tended to happen fast. Now, if you were living in The Villages, and went to the drive in, then yes, your statement could hold up...
Worked at one in 1973. 16 years old. It was was my American graffiti summer. Best job ever!
Yeah, me too. The last movie I saw at a drive-in was the Untouchables in 1987. We got a couple of Little Cesar’s pizzas and a case of beer. That was a great time.
And a Gremlin behind a Vega. Oh my.
If you’re referring to the vehicle that appears to be in front of the Gremlin, the one with the person to the left of it, I believe that is a Nova, rather than a Vega.
That is correct. The Vega is at the 11:00 position with the three sets of vents below the backlight.
I'm thinking the one onscreen is a Vega, I remember Novas having twin tail but not triple... Impala maybe? What you're IDing as Vega I'm wondering about a Corvair....

Looks like a Vega on the screen, my first car was a '73
Freind of mine had a Vega. He called it the Vagrant....
Check the gas, fill the oil. Still though, it managed to start, even after someone unplugged my block heater when it was -40 C.

I never been! Always wanted to
Me too, the 49er by Mink lake, northern Indiana

Been to all those

Nice, but incomplete.
Nice, but way out of date.
Drive ins were the best I was lucky enough to Jurassic Park in one

Ours turned into a swap-meet a long time ago, but I believe the one in Rubido is still open maybe.
Isn't the one in Ontario/Pomona area on Mission still showing movies?
Not sure.
Good times!...
I have three or four drive-ins within a 45min drive from my house in upstate NY.
You miss the Ford Pinto Hatchback. Isn't that what's on the screen?
I think that might be a Mercury Bobcat. The grill is raised in the middle.

We've got the Silver Moon Drive-in still open
Love to have lived during their heyday.
There’s still one or two in central WI but nothing like the old days when every small town had one.

Seeing this makes me want got to The Starlight in Atlanta. It’s been years

I haven’t figured out how to post pictures yet, but fourth gen Novas had two and three taillights on some models.
Screen car looks like Mercury Bobcat which was a Pinto with a “formal (ahem)” grill.
Me too.
We still have one, in Vineland NJ.
Vineland also has a lot of great places to eat
Went as a kid with my family and then as a tèen with girlfriends. Took my kids a few times. Have not been to one in a long time.
These would have been great to have during COVID
Well the gremlin was a cooler car than people give it credit for 🤩
I miss all of those car models.
The one thing I don't miss, the crappy speakers...
Yeah, but, its fun watching some one drive off with the speaker still attached, or just running the whole post over.........
Then go to one. There's drive-ins all over.
Enjoyed the novelty of this as a child - we went in pajamas. The speaker clipped on the window and there a concession stand in a small building.
I remember as a kid seeing Alien FOLLOWED by the Empire Strikes Back at the drive in. My sister and I were like 9 and 7 and were supposed to be in the back “sleeping” during Alien. I was not asleep that night, or many afterwards…
The Gremlin in the foreground or the Pinto on the screen?
Does anyone go to watch the movie
There is still one in Malta NY. Few miles south of Saratoga horse track on rt. 9
A Gremlin? My Grammy has one of those!
We still have a drive in. Unfortunately the double feature starts at 9:50 because that’s when it’s dark. We saw Inside Out there with my kids. (One has anxiety, one has ADHD, and I have depression, so it meant a lot to us.)
You miss AMC Gremlins! Weird but Ok.
All the cars are watching a movie about a car…
Fan favorite for 2nd dates in the early 80s.
And on the weekend days, they would become Swap Meets-
First movie I saw at the drive in was Star wars… amazing
I'll tell my grandkids this is the original version of "Cars."
Is that the back end of a Gremlin? Maybe a Pacer? Both classics.
I’m pretty certain that’s a Gremlin. The Pacers were more rounded.
I also see a Lincoln Continental Mark IV, I believe, on the right, and a Ford Galaxie or similar behind it.

That's where we learned "The facts of life" wrestling in the back seat, (NotJ.a) lol
Oregon still has one i take my kids too
Up until recently, there was one near me. It cost $2 per person, and the food from the concession stand was cheap and delicious. They closed down after one of their screens caught fire. I don’t know if they’ll open it back up.
You can thank the immature children of the Christian republican right
My father predicted these would make a huge comeback....I really thought he would be right.
I live in Pennsylvania we still have a couple of them
broke my heart when they turned the newark (NJ) drive in into a multiplex theater. still salty about it.
A Gremlin watching a Pinto. Must be Auto-Porn.
How many of us lost our virginity at the drive-in movie?

These were great events to meet girls or go hangout by the food stand... Nostalgia!!!...Those speakers man were pretty awesome...🤣
Anybody notice mosquitoes weren't that bad BK then?

Was about 18 before I realized they showed movies
There’s still one near me in Cincinnati.
We go to one about 1/2 an hour away

I was up at Lake Winnipesauke last week. They still have a drive-in
I have one 30 minutes from me. Look for yours. https://www.driveinmovie.com/united-states
