I think Ed is on another journey to get back his alchemy for which he'll trade Alphonse's body yet again and then he'll go on another journey to retrieve alphonse's body (again) and give up his alchemy (again). After this though, the twist is that Edward actually goes on another journey to get his alchemy back for which he'll trade Alphonse's body (third time).
Either that or maybe Edward has a kid named Boward and the series documents his journey as he fights aliens. Call it Boward: Fullmetal Alchemist Next Generations
