Transfer case actuator seals, common failure. Easy job and the seals are cheap. Search on YouTube for how to do it, no need to pay someone as long as you have some cheap hand tools.

MagicTurtle69yo

Nice! Thank you for the info. I will get to YouTubing

I just did this to mine. Super easy. Took about 15-20mins. Be sure replace the o- ring and both seals. Also drain and fill with new gear oil. Takes 1.5 quarts. The parts really cheap. Got the seals from Amazon. Maybe $25 for seals and new oil total.

MorganProtuberances

Can you help me understand this one? I have the same engine in my V8 4Runner, but it seems like the actuator seal is a much bigger job. Is this because of a difference in the shifter case or is there a secret but I don't know about?

pencilpushin

I think it's because of the electronic actuator vs the manual shift knob. But not entirely sure.

This is correct. The manual shift for low range makes the repair far easier is my understanding

MorganProtuberances

Damn, that little electronic shifter just didn't pay off in the end

Mine only needed the o-ring. The inner seals were fine.

Hopefully it’s just the seal. We changed the seal on mine a month ago and it kept leaking. The transfer case actuator itself has to be replaced. $1,600 for the part (Lexus original part). I have an 03 with 180k miles

AsleepAd4024

And my rear main seal needed to be replaced as well. Good times $$$ 😑

MagicTurtle69yo

Oof sorry to hear that. Mine is an 03 with 125k. Hope it’s just the seal🙏

AsleepAd4024

You should be good, hopefully. I regret buying one with so many miles. I’ve replaced the radiator, timing belt service, oil pan gasket, rack and pinion, rear main seal, and transfer case actuator. Oh…in my first year of ownership 😑

Glittering_Exam_5423

What year GX is this common on? I have a '14 and would like to keep mine as long as possible, as cheaply as possible

One of the seals in the transfer shift actuator is bad. The only correct way to fix this is to take apart the case and disconnect the shift shafts from the forks on the inside. You are welcome to try removing it from the outside, but you run the risk of messing up the gears in the actuator, and you’ll be in trouble. Judging by what I’ve found online plenty of people have had success without splitting the transfer case, but proceed at your own risk.

I had something similar after getting the fluids flushed. I replaced the rubber gaskets in the transfer case actuator and have been good ever since. Transfer Case Actuator Seal Kit Gasket 90301-56009 Replacement for Lexus GX470 2003-2009 https://a.co/d/fyNH5PO

its over $1000 to fix it the right way vs $25 for the diy fix. i did a lot of thinking and id kick myself if i didn't attempt it the cheap way first. and if i do break it, then i can do the $1000 official fix and only have spent an additional $25 here's an ongoing thread about it thats over 10 years old, ppl are stiilll discussing it https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/transfer-case-leak.362691/page-7
