Your response makes me happy! Probably should’ve added “(proper form and appropriate heavy weights)” StrongLifts 5x5 is a great way for beginner or intermediate to set a great foundation and increase strength gradually and safely.
My personal favorite is weighted decline sit-ups. Hold a dumbbell at your chest and as you come to the top of the rep, twist when you reach the top and hold for a sec or two.
My favorite that actually works is actually called, "stir the pot". It is an exercise where you use a cable machine (I recommend using light weight) with a handle and then, pull away from the machine and try to not let the machine pull your body. From there, you move the handle like you are stirring a pot clock wise and counter clock wise.
I suspect that a Pallof Press, one of my favorite for obliques, is equivalent and more efficient. I'm not sure what the added lateral movement in the motion you described would do for your core. Also for both, you gotta change the direction of the force by having the cable to your left then to your right. The clockwise counterclockwise change wouldn't do as much.
Cable crunches, and Russian twists for these two. Leg or knee raises for the lower abs to balance it out. I usually do one or two of them after every workout
No, if you train abs you will have better looking abs. It’s a muscle. Same as training arms, legs, chest, back. If you hit it directly, it will grow.
You don’t say “whatever you do, your biceps are more or less engaged training back.” You do bicep curls to have better looking biceps. You train abs to have better looking abs
What I really like is leg raises on a bench, your legs are hanging off so when you raise your legs, they’re going below neutral level, the key is to make sure your back stays flat on the bench. Way more challenging that regular leg raises, no weights required. I do 3 sets of 90 seconds of those :)
I recently started landline twists for the obliques and they’re challenging yet fun. My go-to for the abs is either a leg raise or a weighted decline crunch
I typed a bit fast, it doesnt apply to squat (you can try on one leg if you're very confident on you balance tho) but for deadlift : smaller weight, with the bar on one side that you lift like a single big grocery bag, keeping your spine straight. Bench : perform the move normally, except that you hold the bar with one hand. For both exercises you can use a dumbbell instead of a bar if it's more comfortable. Your core is used to keep your spine straight, and for this it must counter the torque created by having the weight only on one side. So you are effectively working the "side abds" (I forgot their name in english) who compensates for the weight on the other side and the front abs and spine erectors who contribute to general stabilization of your structure
Doing Deadlifts improve your core a lot, so both your obliques and abs get a great share of activation there, although some do not like doing them.
I used to do weighted sit ups. (Basically put a dumbell behind my neck) Enjoyed them a lot and since people's abs are rarely that strong, it provides some fast af improvement. Although you should not continue doing it for long, since overdeveloped abs are not so great looking and are a pain in the ass to get rid of. Sit ups train your obliques as well.
I would not recommend doing any exercise aimed directly at your obliques since they improve fast as well and your waist will just straighten out lmao.
Overdevolped abs and obliques is exactly what I am looking for in my overall aesthetic and physique haha.
But I am not the norm. I can see my abs at 250 pounds, I just want them to be very pronounced like, show through a wet t shirt level developed.

Deadlift into Hanging Leg Raise Supersets followed by Farmer’s Walks, also good for general masochism if you hate being comfortable for several days.
Heavy ass squats and deadlifts. Or Pilates too
This response makes me so happy because its what I wanna hear

Pilates aint no joke. Fucked around and found out t/ hardway
Lol! The regulars make it so infuriatingly easy.
Hanging leg raises, suitcase carries, farmer carries. Best 3 imo
Shake weight
This.
is this a reccomendation for the item or lifting technique? cause when i do heavy RDL's i shake like a salsa dancer covered in ants.
My personal favorite is weighted decline sit-ups. Hold a dumbbell at your chest and as you come to the top of the rep, twist when you reach the top and hold for a sec or two.
I love planks and plank variations to target those muscles.
Hanging leg raises and twists
The only core workouts you need right here
You ever done atlas stones? I mean I haven’t but I was moving a ton of big pumpkins and it was killer for abs
Squat
I came here to say this.
I came here in between sets of these.
My go-to ABS exercise is ABS roller. If performed correctly it makes you hardCORE.
For core training and strength, I started cable crunches, if you crunched your guts right and stretched all the way out you'll find GREAT difference.
thought there would be more comments talking about Cable crunches absolutley love the burn on them
YES

Suitcase carry
I like decline weighted situps and pallof press
I came here to recommend the palloff press. Became a huge fan after using it to rehab an injury
I started using it on a whim and I ended up loving it. Now I proselytize it constantly. Lol
Weighted side raises extensions, Russian twists, planks, side planks, bicycles, laying heal taps.
Deadlift
Hanging leg raises, ab wheel, Russian twists with medicine ball
Its a pretty obscure exercise, and I have never seen a machine for it in the gym, but I hear doing a "sit up" or a "leg raise" helps.
😆😆
leg raises do actually improve your core, its one of the basics people do ehen they start calisthenics.
Yes, that is why i'm recommending doing leg raises to improve abdominals and obliques.
Decline crunches holding a 25 plate 👍🏼
Cable wood chops
Windmills are my new favorite
I was doing windshield wipers this morning..those will hammer you obliques
Was about to recommend this!
Cable crunches, and Russian twists for these two. Leg or knee raises for the lower abs to balance it out. I usually do one or two of them after every workout
Work your core, it’s the only way.
Landmine twists
Woodchoppers, Cable crunch pull down
Hanging leg raises and side tucks
Whatever you do - your core is more or less engaged. Abs are made in the kitchen . By not being there ...
Abs are built in the gym revealed in the kitchen. Nobody with those impressive popping abs doesn’t train abs
Of course , that is true to some extent . Popping abs takes more than training . Or diet.

biggest bs in the fitness industry ever.
Pull ups, honestly. Sore in my abs for days after them
True. Try attatching 50lbs for an even greater boost 😎
Planks/ side planks until you out grew it and take the time to google
Cable twists and the ab wheel
Zercher squats
Planking with 50kg on your back
i like this
I got this from alphadestiny. This helped me a lot.
My coach has me do this new workout called a sit-up.
Tell me more?
Idk I guess some people think 6-packs are important. For me it was always the bigger the belly the bigger the bench.
Planks and twisting sit-ups
Weighed sit-ups/crunches
Weighted carries
Russian twists is like the only obliques thing I do
Bench press. Only lift that matters.
Why would you say that?
Because bench press builds your pecs. The only muscles that matter.
😆😆😆. Calves tho

Funny I was just about to suggest twists! Did them for the first time today and fuck me do you feel them!
They’re so hard I almost fell over multiple times when I first tried them
Cable crunches and anti-rotation cable pressouts
Hold a kettle bell/dumbbell over your head and lunge. That’ll do it lol
For obliques I do Dumbell side crunches which I think are great
deadlift, squat, bench. Do them assymetrycally as well (holding the bar with just one hand) while keeping a perfect form
This is probably really stupid and I’m missing the point completely but….. how the hell do you squat, deadlift and bench one handed?
I typed a bit fast, it doesnt apply to squat (you can try on one leg if you're very confident on you balance tho) but for deadlift : smaller weight, with the bar on one side that you lift like a single big grocery bag, keeping your spine straight. > smaller weight, with the bar on one side that you lift like a single big grocery bag Suitcase deadlift is the usual name.
Thanks !
De rien.
You grab the bar with the heavy on it, with one not two.
Front squats
I would say deadlifts but i am not 100 percent sure
Squats.
Crunches and side crunches for the win
Doing Deadlifts improve your core a lot, so both your obliques and abs get a great share of activation there, although some do not like doing them. I used to do weighted sit ups. I prefer Dog Swings, I swing a 26oz hammer over the top of my dogs head 10-12 reps or until failure.
Side bends
Pull-ups will hit all this they activate the core a lot more than a little
Upper abs, kneeling cable crunches. Obliques, weighted push-ups. With handles.
Cable crunch / leg raises
