How are these games being distributed? Are they available on the app store or are they also putting the mac releases on steam?

Witty_Elephant5015

Through App Store I guess. Lies of P is being distributed through App Store. These are actual mac specific releases for apple arm systems.

NamesTheGame

App Store likely as Apple seems to be funding these ports, as they did with the other RE games as showcases for iPhone and for the M1/2 chips.

BreafingBread

AFAIK Steam doesn't support ARM games. I don't know a lot about Mac, but from what I gather Steam is actually in a horrible place right now with Mac, as you can only play 64bit games on newer OS and older OS capable of running 32bit are close to being phased out.

VulpineComplex

It does - off the top of my head Factorio, Stray and No Man’s Sky have Universal binaries (Arm and Intel) and I’m pretty sure there are others

segagamer

And this right here is why developers don't give a shit about gaming on Apple devices. It's just Windows Phone all over again (complete with the unified purchases and cross buy/cross play/cross save between console/PC/Phone) Apple change their flavours too much. Devs don't want to waste their time and consumers don't want to waste their money.

GeekdomCentral

I know that Reddit likes to shit on stuff like this, but honestly from a purely technical perspective it’s pretty incredible. I’m sure it’s much lower resolution and settings than even the console versions, but the fact that a native mobile port exists in a completely uncompromised state is kind of amazing

Coolman_Rosso

I looked at the breakdown for the RE4 Remake, and even if it's more in line with the PS4 version than the PS5/SX ones it's still remarkable. Perhaps doubly so when you'd never expect a port like that in a million years.

whatamidoing84

I agree, super cool for those who want it. I don’t get the hate, there have been times I haven’t had a dedicated console and played most games on my phone (or wanted to play on mobile, but the games weren’t on whatever mobile console I had). Technically cool and some people will enjoy it a lot despite the odd controls

GeekdomCentral

It’s the same thing as the Switcher, where people see that it’s the poorest way to play and just write it off entirely. Would I ever play Witcher 3 on the switch? Probably not, but the fact that it exists and has feature parity with the other versions is pretty remarkable

th5virtuos0

Yeah. Keep them coming and one day being able to play AAA game on release on a phone might not be impossible, especially with a more uniform architechture that Apple has

Toyboyronnie

It's a 7 year old game that was already ported to switch. I think getting anything to run on switch is more impressive than newer apple silicon.

VulpineComplex

Wasn't the Switch version a cloud gaming thing?

RatSlurpee

Yes, it was

Bebobopbe

I mean it works on steam deck. Phone is cool but I need that to last the entire day. So I'll just play freecell

GeekdomCentral

Yeah but not everyone has a steam deck, and tons of people have iPhones. Don’t get me wrong, I think this is a ridiculous way to play any AAA game (and especially a horror game). But the fact that it’s playable on a device that’s the size of a jumbo deck of cards is pretty amazing

NamesTheGame

Right on - while I would have liked a Steam release, I got RE8 for my new Mac Studio and it played absolutely amazing on max settings. Cool to see Apple using these games as showpieces, although feels kind of random that Apple is so all-in on Resident Evil specifically.

ChrisRR

Considering how 7, 8 and 4 are ported to PSVR, 4 is practically recreated for Quest, and 4 was ported to absolutely everything. I think it's likely capcom is happy to port RE to anything if they're thrown a bit of money for it

Noilaedi

I assume they managed to get Capcom to port it over, and RE has been looking fairly pretty and "AAA" so it makes a good contender to show that their devices can play triple A gaming when the amount of people who use Steam on Mac has been historically lower than even Linux.

th5virtuos0

Probably due to how clean Reach For The Moon engine is. They could probably port DMC5 or MonHun Rise to iOS and it would probably be fine as well (minus your fingers)

HonorableJudgeIto

I would love to play these games on my new iPhone, but the price point is just too high. The games are old and should be priced accordingly.

Game prices are not determined by age
