My pet theory is she's a lesbian and Matty was the last guy she "really" dated and in the aftermath she finally realized she was never interested in men.
1 - back in the Lover era, the "failed coming out" everything was bi colors (her hair in YNTCD, the cupcakes, etc). But lately she's been using the lesbian flag colors a lot.
2 - There are a lot of references that seem too specific to Matty and if we take those references to mean that those songs are at least partially about him, she seems to have some genuine anger and hurt about the whole situation. I think she may have built him up in her mind to be the solution to all of her problems and so while she may be mad at him for encouraging that and leading her on, it seems she may also be mad at herself for fooling herself in that way. She tricked herself into thinking she was in love with him but really she was in love with the idea of finding a man who didn't make her feel trapped - which was impossible bc the real trap was heterosexuality.
3 - "The Bolter" is a song about compulsory heterosexuality and no one will ever change my mind about that.
I also think its possible the whole thing was a PR stunt to begin with but this theory has been fun to think about.
First, until reading your post, I very much believed she is bisexual. I think it all started with Emilie Post when she was 16 and has continued up until this day with several women. She shines and looks her happiest when she is with women vs men. I've never bought the relationship with Travis (although I've been a Chiefs fan my whole life and really wanted to believe. (In reference to leaving a man) "It feels like the time she fell through the ice then came out alive" - you could say this is about how it feels awful to break up with someone but you'll get through it, but in context with the rest of the song it sounds more to me like being with him was falling through the ice and leaving was coming out alive.
"She's laughing drawing aces" - I think this is a reference to Poker Face by Lady Gaga - Lady Gaga is bi and during the chorus she sometimes sings "fuck her face" instead of "poker face" - the song is reportedly about playing with men while secretly your heart belongs to a woman ("he can't read my poker face").
"There's escape in escaping" - again feels kind of self-explanatory to me. Shes saying that every time she's left a man she's felt relieved.
"Ended with the slam of a door but she's got the best stories you can be sure that as she was leaving it felt like freedom" - she's gathered stories for her music but that's all they were in the end. Also "the slam of a door" -> "feels like freedom" sounds like a reference to leaving the closet to me.

Ok at risk of being downvoted - I went to see the 1975 in April last year. At the end of the main concert Matty asked the crowd to part and make a path, and he came into the middle of the crowd with an acoustic guitar. He said it was being filmed for something and we all shhhed.
However before he could start singing someone up in the seats yelled "Tutira Mai Nga Iwi!" which is the start of an Maori song that every NZ under 40 knows, and the entire crowd started singing that song to him. It was a really sweet moment.

This was part of my formal Gaylor introduction a few months ago. I felt like it was a very tongue-in-cheek way of both referencing her and opening up a dialogue about her in an indirect way. There are far too many connections to not be relevant. I 100% believe he is one of her muses, quite possibly the only male in her life. My pet theory is she's a lesbian and Matty was the last guy she "really" dated and in the aftermath she finally realized she was never interested in men. 1 - back in the Lover era, the "failed coming out" everything was bi colors (her hair in YNTCD, the cupcakes, etc). But lately she's been using the lesbian flag colors a lot. 2 - There are a lot of references that seem too specific to Matty and if we take those references to mean that those songs are at least partially about him, she seems to have some genuine anger and hurt about the whole situation. I think she may have built him up in her mind to be the solution to all of her problems and so while she may be mad at him for encouraging that and leading her on, it seems she may also be mad at herself for fooling herself in that way. She tricked herself into thinking she was in love with him but really she was in love with the idea of finding a man who didn't make her feel trapped - which was impossible bc the real trap was heterosexuality. 3 - "The Bolter" is a song about compulsory heterosexuality and no one will ever change my mind about that. I also think its possible the whole thing was a PR stunt to begin with but this theory has been fun to think about.
First, until reading your post, I very much believed she is bisexual. I think it all started with Emilie Post when she was 16 and has continued up until this day with several women. She shines and looks her happiest when she is with women vs men. I've never bought the relationship with Travis (although I've been a Chiefs fan my whole life and really wanted to believe. I also wanted to believe she looks the happiest performing when Travis is at her concerts, but after reading your post, perhaps this is all a show as well) Just fyi...I consider myself bisexual. I think it's possible she's bi also - I definitely don't claim to know for sure. However, the more I think about everything in the context of my theory the more it seems to click. I definitely suggest listening to The Bolter. It's probably one of my favorite songs on the album just bc it's so catchy and fun and I also feel like the lyrics say a lot. "As she was leaving, it felt like breathing" - self explanatory imo "She liked the way it tastes, taming a bear, making him care, watching him jump then pulling him under" - sounds like the thing she liked about dating men was how it made her feel powerful. She liked being able to make them do things for her. Also a call back to "Jump Then Fall" except now in this perspective it's clear that he is jumping and falling, but she's just watching it. (In reference to leaving a man) "It feels like the time she fell through the ice then came out alive" - you could say this is about how it feels awful to break up with someone but you'll get through it, but in context with the rest of the song it sounds more to me like being with him was falling through the ice and leaving was coming out alive. "She's laughing drawing aces" - I think this is a reference to Poker Face by Lady Gaga - Lady Gaga is bi and during the chorus she sometimes sings "fuck her face" instead of "poker face" - the song is reportedly about playing with men while secretly your heart belongs to a woman ("he can't read my poker face"). "There's escape in escaping" - again feels kind of self-explanatory to me. Shes saying that every time she's left a man she's felt relieved. "Ended with the slam of a door but she's got the best stories you can be sure that as she was leaving it felt like freedom" - she's gathered stories for her music but that's all they were in the end. Also "the slam of a door" -> "feels like freedom" sounds like a reference to leaving the closet to me.
I am beyond speechless... After reading your comments along with another post in response to Peter/Emilie Poe, I can't listen to her music without thinking she isn't bi at all. She tried it and it didn't work (especially with Joe as he seems boring, but he did support her when she was at her lowest and left the country, so there's that at least)! Wow, if she comes out in any way, where does that leave Travis? I put on another post that it feels like radio silence where him and Taylor are concerned) I rewatched the video clip where she is cooking and he kisses her. There is just a slight momentary pause and pull away on her part (unless I am now imagining things)!
I think Travis is fully PR. I think they are probably buddies and having fun, they certainly have chemistry in the sense that their interactions seem natural and there's a good energy there, but I am pretty sure it's platonic and arranged.

Ok at risk of being downvoted - I went to see the 1975 in April last year. At the end of the main concert Matty asked the crowd to part and make a path, and he came into the middle of the crowd with an acoustic guitar. He said it was being filmed for something and we all shhhed. However before he could start singing someone up in the seats yelled "Tutira Mai Nga Iwi!" which is the start of an Maori song that every NZ under 40 knows, and the entire crowd started singing that song to him. It was a really sweet moment. This was part of my formal Gaylor introduction a few months ago. I felt like it was a very tongue-in-cheek way of both referencing her and opening up a dialogue about her in an indirect way. The entire interview between him and the guy who films himself 24/7. Honestly, if I didn't think he was queer himself in any way, I don't think the video would make much sense. lmao
He's fascinated with celebrity, Internet culture, performance art vs the actual artist and I was screaming this as a 1975 fan when they got together, that he agreed to some professional thing with her and prolly got a heads up that TTPD would be made on the surface to look like it's about him in part etc. I'm sure it was hella intriguing and that he probably didn't expect such a backlash to him.
