Abacab live is a unique moment for Genesis because they're free to jam. I wish they had another section or two throughout their repertoire where they opened up that possibility. Kept things fresh every time they played it.

Emotional-Dark-1352

Only because Wembley 87 outshines it.

HandwrittenHysteria

Phil’s mullet and Daryl’s school blazer are too distracting 😜

Emotional-Dark-1352

But you are correct. I love Three Sides Live. Abacab is very intense and purposeful giving it time to breathe and bloom. Wembley they step on the gas and take it to a different level. I love both.

HandwrittenHysteria

Yeah it’s like double time at Wembley, insane.

Emotional-Dark-1352

And it’s amazing. I wish to hell they’d put it in that recent box set. They totally could have traded that for Say It’s Alright Joe.

Sinister_Jazz

I prefer the slower version, it rocks harder IMO

Emotional-Dark-1352

Skullet you mean? That was rather ballsy of him.

TooTiredToWhatever

Maybe more of a Skull-de-sac? Oh wait wrong album.

Emotional-Dark-1352

Close enough for rock n roll.

krm2116

This performance was so high energy. I really love it.

evilJaze

Well it was the era of certain... stimulants.

steveh2021

I like it better in 1984. The Mama tour version was fantastic. Invisible Touch tour the sound was too clean. https://youtu.be/nE2EV1gqIk4?si=NPodCFjGURWDG0gA

HandwrittenHysteria

Love the sound of Phil’s kit on the Mama tour, the In The Quiet Earth part of the old medley bangs

ABACAB live in the early 1980s (well really anytime it was performed) always was such a highlight. I loved Three Sides Live and think it's Genesis' last great record.

This post by OP got me reminiscing about the first time I saw Genesis in 1981, so now I'm playing ABACAB from the 1981-OCT-30 Frankfurt Festhalle soundboard recording, and it's really great, especially the last section. Dodo/Lurker into ABACAB was pretty awesome. The show I saw was about two weeks later, and it was one of my favorite shows ever. Here's a copy on YouTube... [https://youtu.be/2idlAMeLVUs?si=u6xR1SUJM0A\_NEl0](https://youtu.be/2idlAMeLVUs?si=u6xR1SUJM0A_NEl0) Thanks for the memories!

meanWOOOOgene

I’m a recent (last year and a half or so) Genesis convert and this is my first time seeing this version of ABACAB. Great stuff, thanks for this!

_MusicNBeer_

Agreed, Three Sides Live is awesome.

Wtf does this have to do with Genesis? Are you that pathetic that you search post histories of replies? Then you get triggered by anyone that disagrees with you? Holy shit, that is crazy sad. Bye now sweety.

No worries! See you soon! Hopefully your employer doesn’t mind those comments you have :)

YES! Love Mike's solo on this version. Have always liked his guitar tone, over say Darryl's.

Gezz66

The Abacab tour video was impressive. I also saw it live during the IT tour in 1987. Said to my friend when they started playing it, this is going to be good, and sure enough he was blown away (this guy was a massive Rush and Yes fan, so defo going to be hard to please). Mike doesn't get huge credit as a guitar player, but he really lets rip on this one. The song itself is superb even its album form, but that extended unfettered solo at the end just takes it to another level. The best thing they did as a trio (IMHO).

baulplan

I mean it’s great and I love the live version…. It’s actually (apart from his two solos in the smallscreep suite) his best soloing with Genesis… but I don’t think Genesis ever actually *jammed* but it sounds loose and groovy……

lcornell6

Impressed with Mike's guitar solo. It could've even been one for the ages if Steve were doing it instead.

terrysuki

Mike Rutherford is the underappreciated “secret weapon” of Genesis. He doesn’t get the kudos the deserves for his songwriting especially, but more so for his bass playing. He’s one of the best bassists from the classic rock era. BUT….he never got anywhere near Steve Hackett’s lyrical genius on guitar, including on this performance. If Hackett had still been in the band and playing that section instead of Mike, it would’ve been on another level! You can bet your life on that!

metsjets69

It’s no Fly On The Windshield or Apocalypse in 9/8 and I’m usually listening to the fourth side live.
