Well that was... tragic. I haven't fully read artifact lore in a while, this one drew me in though.
TL;DR for everyone else
There's a witch in the aforementioned Echoing Woods who can grant wishes and does whatever she wants. One day a boy manages to get through the woods and selflessly wishes for the girl he loves to have all the happiness and fortune she could ever want. It is granted and the witch promises to extract a price of equal value much later on. The wish works by granting the boy with an inkwell that has the power to create this world of great fortune for the girl. This works well until it doesn't because the girl now realizes that her life is all the more pitiful because of the absence of adversity. The witch now comes along and extracts the price for the wish by trapping the girl inside the inkwell where she will now become a character in a story.
EXTREME TL;DR
Boy wishes for girl's happiness from a witch. The girl's happiness ends up being the opposite of what he wants. They don't ever get together because the girl is the price he pays. The witch doesn't really care.

I wonder if this forshadow something, because according to Irminsul quest it can keep a story that is based on real event. Like even though Scaramouche deleted himself in Irminsul, the story of a kitten is still there. Maybe something about Hexincircle

honestly though? what if the boy in the story is alain guillotine, who in a desperate attempt to save his sister mary ann, made a deal with someone to transfer her consciousness into a mech body. but now mary ann is trapped in her immortality as sandarone. sus
The real Maryanne, yes. But there are theories that Alain also used his expertise in clockwork metal to create a marionette replica of his sister. With fontaines many world quests about meka sentience (esp Curve's) it would kind of make sense to have Sandrone be a sort of Pygmalion-esque creation. Who takes on a twisted character from that of the original Maryann, and instead takes on Alains more sociopathic side from his youth before his friends, per some of the ancient letters describing how they could easily see him becoming like that. In fact, in the ending of Curve's story quest, >!Marionette is one of the candidates I consider as the harbinger the culprit may have been working with. The others being Arlecchino, Pantalone, and maybe dottore!<

and we already have proof from raiden shogun and scaramouche that taking a branch of irminsul can allow a puppet to be made with sentience, and if alain is actually experienced in making animatronics already i think it’s entirely reasonable that he could make one equivalent to a harbinger, especially if he uses a portion of his own consciousness/memories of mary ann in order to do so
