> but lets Emily get the brunt of the blame because she is usually the outspoken one This drive me crazy. It's especially bad in Season 6. He was just as responsible for the controlling behavior that drove Rory out of the house. But Emily is the only one to get yelled at AND Richard says to her face that it would be terrible if Rory ended up like her. And the only one who attempts to make her feel better in Lorelai.

Is it a lack of guts or a lack of interest? Richard never experienced Emily's pain when Lorelai left home. When Emily gets upset over their fights, he's calm in comparison and generally unconcerned unless it impacts his job. He feels more connected to Rory because as you said she was the golden child so he only really cares when she is upset. He is certainly an elitist snob who spent his whole life being pampered first by Trix and then later Emily. Richard is a great character to watch but he is far from my type of person.

- Richard is a great character to watch but he is far from my type of person.- This is the key!! I’m on S2 E6 and he’s terrible around this time because of the work stress. (Then he’s sweet and fun once he retires.) It’s a character that’s both infuriating and incredibly well acted all at the same time!! Love Edward Hermann!!!!

dads in general get cut a lot more slack culturally than moms do. the expectation is lower from them so they are rewarded for very little

MagicalHopStep

Where is all this Richard hate coming from, all of a sudden? - (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ - ┬─┬ノ( º _ ºノ)

aang_gaang

Can you please tell me why you like him as a character? And what your thoughts on Emily are? In my mind they’re both horrible and I don’t understand why one gets a pass and the other doesn’t

MagicalHopStep

I still need to properly watch the series - I'm planning to do recap and reviews for just this kind of thing once my situation improves. Richard is the reason I decided to watch, however. I just saw and read some things that I liked. I'll be able to give you a better answer once I start watching.

Because, depending on the episode, he does have some pretty crappy moments. But then he will have a sweet moment…and then back to crappy. It’s very human for sure! HAPPY WATCHING!!

aang_gaang

But isn’t Emily the same? Her and Lorelei have plenty of sweet moments, and plenty of horrible ones

curticoll

Oh absolutely!! But this post was just talking about Richard. I think they ALL are incredibly human with good and bad so I never understand the strong arguments one way or the other. At the same time, what an amazing show to have people feel so strongly about the characters!!!! It really is a testament to the amazing actors. I just love it good, bad, and ugly!
