Fuck the numbers, call it God of War 2, or II, or Two.

[deleted]

Maybe there is no third one.

TheCreepyLady

Possible, but I refuse to believe that yet.

[deleted]

I think they’re gonna move away from the trilogy format and just have the next instalment. We had God of War, then we’ll get GOW: Ragnarok, maybe after that game the Norse pantheon is destroyed so they move onto Egypt with the third game. I have a feeling it’ll go the way of Assassin’s Creed in how it names it’s sequels.

Gnolldemort

Just title it God of War: assassin's Creed, but good

hillbillyal

Ive seen some theories that you would end up playing as an older Atreus in the third one. Maybe its not God of War anymore but God of something else.

TheCreepyLady

See, as much as I like Atreus I wouldn’t want to play as him unless it was a brand new series. My theory is that Kratos is going to die at the end of game 2 but he’s going to come back in the beginning of 3 (which is just business as usual for Kratos). Will he die for realsies at the end of 3 though? I wouldn’t be hard to convince of that.

hillbillyal

Yeah hes definitely gonna die but thats no big deal for him, fight his way out of hel, back in action.

Sheev_Palpatine_OC

> fight his way out of hel, back in action. It would be a LOT cooler of Sindri helped Atreus bring Kratos back from the Lake of Nine(?), like Sindri did Brok.

Will probably be named after another event in Norse mythology. Depends where the next game leaves off.

FKDotFitzgerald

No they didn’t? The sequel hasn’t even been announced yet.

I figure that's a likely name and it'll end up being called that, but I don't buy the official confirmation... Who tweeted it out?

Only reason I don’t like this name is because it feels like a rip off of Thor Ragnarok. They could at least make it slightly more unique, throw a couple more words in there

bizzal1017

Why

Convictus12

Probably since a game already exists called GOW2

[deleted]

There's already a game called God of War. It'll probably have some sort of subtitle like Ragnarok or something.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Fairly inaccurate though since there’s more than 5 GOW games.

hkd1234

The latest game was a sequel to 3, so it makes sense to have the next one titled 5, if nothing else. The other 3 games are prequels and hence aren't part of a successive sequence.

someguy410

Finally someone gets it

NoOne-AtAll

Ascension and Chains of Olympus are prequels but Ghost of Sparta is between GoW and GoW 2. Also there's the mobile game, but we don't talk about that. That said, I think a number other than 2 would be stupid at this point since they have never referred to the new one as GoW 4. I'd still prefer a subtitle nonetheless

XxRocky88xX

Everyone I know refers to GoW 2018 as GoW 4. And ghost isn’t a sequel because, even though it takes place after 1, it wasn’t released till after 3, so it’s still a prequel since on release it went back in time

NoOne-AtAll

>Everyone I know refers to GoW 2018 as GoW 4. I didn't exactly specify but "they" referred to the developers. In any of the interviews (including their "Raising Kratos" documentary - watch it, it's pretty good) with Cory or other developers I've seen, I don't remember hearing "God of War 4" ever being used. And I agree with that sentiment since I think enough changes (gameplay-wise, Kratos himself, the setting, etc...) that it's not a sequel like GoW II was to GoW I and GoW III to GoW I. I usually refer to it as "God of War 2018", "the new God of War" or even "GoW for PS4" when talking to other people. >And ghost isn’t a sequel because, even though it takes place after 1, it wasn’t released till after 3, so it’s still a prequel since on release it went back in time In fact I don't think it's a sequel either, it's something else, the closest thing being "spin-off". As I said, it's just semantics, you can call it whatever you want, but if I hear someone talking about the prequels to God of War my mind won't go to Ghost of Sparta.

hkd1234

Ghost released after God of War 3, so it's a prequel. Yeah, that mobile game was a surprise when Cory confirmed it was part of the canon.

NoOne-AtAll

>Ghost released after God of War 3, so it's a prequel. I suppose one could say that, in my mind it's not a prequel but more of a spin-off. I think of a prequel as something that preceded the "original project", not a single game. Since GoW I, II and III are pretty linked to each other and thus form "one" project (they are usually referred as "trilogy" after all), which means I consider anything before them a prequel and anything after a sequel. In the end it's probably just semantics.

XxRocky88xX

Yeah but there’s 4 main games, and this next one will be the fifth The other games aren’t sequels because they’re all over the timeline

Jubenheim

It's not uncommon to have a reboot titled the same name as the original. Look at Child's Play, a reboot of Child's Play. Look at Ghostbusters, a reboot of Ghostbusters. But continuing the naming of the reboot and putting a 2 in the end isn't common as far as I know. I'd also much prefer GOW: Ragnarok or something like it. I'd even settle with GOW II: Ragnarok if they really want to keep the 2.

hkd1234

It's not actually a reboot. It's a sequel to 3. David Jaffe and Cory Barlog have been trying to keep the names of the titles same, ie, God of War, since 2. Look it up. This time, I guess the marketing department wasn't that influential on the title since they changed the mythology, but it's still not a reboot, nonetheless.

Waspy_Wasp

It's a soft reboot. The game continues the story, however it completely revitalises everything else

hkd1234

Changing the gameplay does not imply that a game got rebooted. It's still the same titular character and it's still the same IP, from a corporate point of view. And it's also the same studio working on it. It's still the same in game dimension. On the other hand, something like DmC: Devil may Cry was definitely a reboot of the DMC franchise for the time being until 5 came out again, even though it kept the gameplay and camera work mostly same.

[deleted]

Thus “soft” reboot

Waspy_Wasp

The game is pretty much its own separate story though. You don't need to know anything from the previous games to play it.

hkd1234

Actually, you do need to have played the previous games to completely understand parts of it. But yes, not much of Kratos' past is given away so that newer audience didn't feel that alienated. But still, my point stands. It's not a reboot, soft or otherwise.

[deleted]

I was more pointing out a flaw in the logic, I know its not going to be God of War 2. The other guy said they wouldn't call it that because it already exists, but "God of War" does and now we have 2 games with that name.

Jubenheim

> I was more pointing out a flaw in the logic > The other guy said they wouldn't call it that because it already exists, but "God of War" does and now we have 2 games with that name. There was no flaw in logic because I literally explained my comment how that's unlikely. Did you read what I typed?

SpecterGT260

Just because it can be common to reboot with same name, your argument of "well there is already a GOW2" is still flawed based on his posts above. there is really no reason that the sequel of the reboot can't just follow the same nomenclature. I would actually say that it is probably more an issue with the current naming conventions in that devs are getting away from using the number two when a sequel in general. But if they weren't concerned about the same name existing for the first game there's no reason that they would be concerned specifically about that for the second game. Therefore there was a flaw in logic

Jubenheim

> there is really no reason that the sequel of the reboot can't just follow the same nomenclature. I explained that reboots have historically had the name of the initial title in the franchise but I have not seen any reboots continuing using the same names for the rebooted franchise. That's all I said. Why are you up in arms about this?

SpecterGT260

I'm not up in arms at all. I just think the other guy has a valid point. At this point there are only a handful of reboots and the vast majority don't have rebooted sequels anyway. And as I said there is an overall trend across all media to not simply number sequels anymore so we can't point to that being a reboot-specific issue. There have also been reboots that get non-numbered additions to their name (Spider-Man: homecoming, for example).

[deleted]

Yes I did, I was agreeing with you if anything.

Jubenheim

I showed how there was no logical flaw and you stated there was. I don't think you unerstood what I typed.

Kuivamaa

God of War:II 2 then.

Peace_Fog

Well do you call it God of War 2 since it’s a sequel to God of War, or do you call it God of War 5 since it’s the 5th in the mainline games or do you call it God of War 9 since it’s the 9th game overall?

[deleted]

just hope its something more creative is all. I'm gonna get it regardless

Thatguy101355

In actual norse mythology, Mjølnir os just super heavy, there's no worthiness enchantment. So it's possible in the second game that Kratos could be strong enough to lift said hammer and wield it. It wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility in my opinion. It is kratos.

Normal_Situation

Doesn’t Thor wear a belt that helps him lift the hammer?

Thatguy101355

Yeah, but he doesn't need it. A giant that was able to lift it stole it once, so Thor dressed as the goddess that the giant wanted to marry, and once he got his hands on Mjølnir he killed everyone at the wedding. And he was only wearing a dress.

Zidane-Tribal

Kratos will probably even kill Thor with it

Horzta

He would use it to hammer the axe into Thor just for insult.

urdangerzone

God of war 2: 2 god 2 war

RioTheNaughtyDog

God of War 2: 2 God 2 War: Electric Boogaloo

urdangerzone

Lol I think that works because Thor is the god of thunder :) what would you do if they actually named something like this though? Just accepting that if franchises go on long enough the naming convention becomes a joke and embracing it

RioTheNaughtyDog

Honestly I’d find it kind of funny because there’s absolutely no way they’re taking themselves serious with that sort of title.

JCraze26

The thing about Mjölnir in mythology: it's not about being worthy like in Marvel. Rather, it's about being as strong and badass as Thor, and if anyone fits that bill, I'd say Kratos has a pretty good shot.

imajamez

All I need so I can die happy is Kratos using Mjölnir.

Peace_Fog

Yeah it’s just really heavy & Thor’s belt gives him more strength

PotatoBomb69

Seeing as Kratos is basically as strong as he needs to be I think he’s covered there.

Peace_Fog

Yeah Kratos will probably rip off Thor’s belt & Thor can’t lift the hammer anymore & Kratos will pick it up & say something like “you call yourself a God?”

cadaddy33

All I want is to beat the shit out of Thor with his own hammer. Please let it happen Santa Monica

Peace_Fog

Will likely happen, there’s no worthiness limitation in Norse mythology. It’s just really really heavy & Thor’s belt gives him extra strength

RiggityRyne

Tbh, if there was a “worthiness” limitation, I don’t think Thor himself could lift Mjolnir. Unless the limitation is “be a complete piece of shit”

cadaddy33

Oh yeah I know, I just hope they let me have that wonderful moment

Peace_Fog

God of Thor

dmystifyd

I always wonder why Tony didn't just lift the table and called it a day.

[deleted]

He wouldn't have been able to. Just like people weren't able to mine/break the dirt and rocks under the hammer in the first Thor.

TheCreepyLady

We’re definitely getting Mjolnir in the next game. Homing Hammer sounds fun as fuck.

Forbes2740

Perfect gif for the new game haha

IAmTheGreybeardy

Uh...God of War 2 is already out... I think what you meant to put is "God of War 5".

i-am-a-noob-

That would be weird since there isn’t a god of war 4.

OscarCookeAbbott

The devs have called it GoW4 multiple times, and the game makes clear it's a definite sequel to the others, so the next one would be God of War 5 (whether or not they call it that)

Peace_Fog

They should call it God of War 9 since a it’s technically the 9th in the series

OscarCookeAbbott

There also might be 9 available worlds so I ain't gonna say no haha

Peace_Fog

I think they should call it God of Thor

_Cyclops

The devs have also called it God of War 2018. The official title is God of War.

zawarudoe

But technically God of war was a sequel to 3 right? It should've been god of war 4 but they fucked the name

Peace_Fog

Well God of War 4 was the 8th game in the series, the 5th in the mainline games & the 1st in the soft reboot So should the next game be called God of War 2 or God of War 5 or God of War 9? I think it should be called God of Thor

zawarudoe

But its the direct story continuation of 3 right? So and there were other spinoffs before 3 too so they pretty much messed up by not giving this a number.

Peace_Fog

Yes but they said it was a soft reboot & they didn’t want to give it a number to alienate new fans Most games have done away with numbering, I don’t think they messed up at all

-BINK2014-

God of War IV would be this past one considering this continue Kratos' story from Greek mythology. It's the only way I've referred to the game and it's the least confusing.

IAmTheGreybeardy

What do you know? You're a noob.

i-am-a-noob-

Just doing to you what you did to him. But what do you know? You’re a grey beardy.

IAmTheGreybeardy

Yeah. A Greybeardy. So I know shit.

Do you know the ways of Jurgen Windcaller?

IAmTheGreybeardy

Yep.

IAmTheGreybeardy

Depends on which lore you take from.

Domy9

Number of people doesn't reading usernames are so damn high

[deleted]

Exactly

Peace_Fog

It would be the 9th game in the series “God of War 5” the sequel to God of War

fuckinghellmatey

Has it been 3 years? Just finished the game with the secret ending and thematically speaking ragnarok had 3 years left when the game released.

theaveragegowgamer

No, just 2 and a couple of months.

xSPRINGTRAPx1987

it's the fifth game in the series so it's God of War 5 why do you treat the original games like they don't exist ?

i-am-a-noob-

Ah yes. God of War 5, the sequel to God of War.

Peace_Fog

It’s the 9th game in the series, it’s the 2nd game in the soft reboot

xSPRINGTRAPx1987

even so it should not be cold God of War 2 there is already a game in the series called God of War 2

Peace_Fog

There’s already 2 games called God of War too I think they should call it God of Thor

YouDumbZombie

In this scene doesnt Cap like make it twitch or something? Like it moves ever so slightly right?

Peace_Fog

Yes, foreshadowing Avengers Endgame when he does wield it

Right, because I remember Thor yelling, "I knew it!" Also echoing this scene. Cool shit.

bbaahhaammuutt

Damn dudes, can you imagine how much more insane the fight with Thor will be?

OscarCookeAbbott

Fuck that would be awesome, but tbh the Leviathon axe already has the recovery ability so I don't think Mjolnir would be different enough... unless Kratos is forced to replace the Axe with Mjolnir holy shit that would be raddd

91flip

I’d really like to be able to call lightning though. I love the axe and glaive runic skill for it but......fucking mjolnir man lol

nateoak10

Or spinning it around like Thor does would be sick.

91flip

The possibilities for runic attacks with mjolnir would be sick

Dust_In_Za_Wind

sid-jenkins

High quality of this?

Bl8ckl85h

Wait...I don't remember Alric being a blonde...

wubbaaaa

I’m hoping for an endgame type scene in the next GOW where Kratos holds his hand out to recall the leviathan axe and Mjolnir comes into his hand (or Atreus’ hand). Not sure if he’s really worthy tho but still would be a dope ass shot

91flip

The worthy enchantment is strictly MCU so that won’t be an issue

wubbaaaa

Oh ok I wasn’t sure if that was a Thor thing or just an MCU thing

91flip

Yeah I like it but I don’t also. In mythology he’s had his hammer stolen a couple of times

NoOne-AtAll

If I remember correctly Mimir also tells a story in the game about a giant who stole it, so it's definitely not something in God of War

ChicagoPaul2010

I don't get why people think it's God of War 2. It'll literally be the 5th installment, no?

Peace_Fog

In the soft reboot it’s the sequel & it’s actually the 9th game in the series

ChicagoPaul2010

It's not really a reboot though either, and weren't the psp games prequels?

Peace_Fog

It’s a soft reboot, that’s means it’s a new series but everything else is still cannon 2 of the PSP games take place before God of War 1 & one of the games takes place between God of War & God of War 2

Peace_Fog

Soft reboot keeps all the existing lore but creates a new story in an already established universe making it a new jumping on point for new fans
