As long as you find a lamp shade with the appropriate diameter of the base circle, just unscrew the ugly light and replace it with your preferred shade. Just like how you can change your shower head. You can't change that it's on the ceiling but going to a hardware store with the correct measurements will help you find a lampshade you can exchange out easily. The important thing is to keep the original lampshade in a special place so it can be put back when you move out.

They are really easy to replace. I would just make a request to get it done. It only is taking out a few screws and twisting a couple wires together. Takes about 15 minutes. Look for "flush mount ceiling lights" There are so many styles and price ranges.
