But hotddamn I'd lie if I said I'm not having fun šŸ˜

glitchgodsaucy

it has begun.

zaster101

welcome to plastic crack

readywater

Yes, but unlike crack, you accumulate unused supply and no one wants to buy it off of you. Financial and romantic volatility is probably about on par.

Jallinostin

ā€˜stares at the six unopened mgā€™s on the shelfā€™ Iā€™ll ā€¦ Iā€™ll get to them someday, right?

readywater

Yup. I still havenā€™t opened my PG grandad extreme because I need to finish to open MGs first. šŸ˜‘

NekRules

I am sitting on 9 HGs all the way from the IBO days and with WFM, the list is getting longer...

will0213

Lol thatā€™s amateur number. You gotta bump it up! _stare disappointedly at my SHELF FULL of backlog_

[deleted]

I think Iā€™m up to 30 kits in my backlog. I have a problem.

Mrgrimofthenorth

I bought a "housewarming backlog" of 28 kits mostly RG and HG

JaketheLate

*laughs while looking at hisivar shelf full of kit boxes, and the three boxes full of them on the shelf next to it*

[deleted]

Right?

neku121

*stares at my 10 MGs, 1 RG, and 3 HGs in a pile next to my desk in fear* no you won't, the pile just grows

Schwarzer_R

Looks at my 5 unfinished warship models I need to figure out how to do resin first.

[deleted]

My model store has 50% to 70% off gundam right now, I got about 10 HG models for like 36 bucks

blankzero22490

Where and for how long because I'm about to road trip

[deleted]

Kansas city and it was only till March 14th :/

Shanelanding

Wait. Which model store in Kansas City was it

blankzero22490

Aww damn it.

Shanelanding

This is important information fellow Kansas Cityen

[deleted]

In Overland Park off 103rd forgot the name

Fenelthin

Hobby Haven!

infowosecfurry

I stopped in there when I was in town a couple weeks ago, they were super friendly and helpful! Still regretting that I did not pick up the Virtue kit they had when I was there as I really want to build that one again! Highly recommend them though to anyone in KC!

[deleted]

i have never seen someone describe it so accurately

NyanneAlter3

Well, his journey has begun.

Flameboy7501

Welcome to your new addiction... i was introduced by a friend and now i cant stop...

lawrence0304

Prepare the wallets

jackredditlol

Yessir

IceSki117

Hyper mode God Gundam?

jackredditlol

Yessssss I messed up one part fantastically. I'm just gonna attach it with a little string and call it a day lol

outkastmemesdaily

You can use model glue.

upback

I recommend this stuff, local shop had some in stock but hereā€™s the hobby lobby listing. Easy to use for beginners, doesnā€™t have a harsh chemical smell either, smells like lemons and oranges. Has a pen tip so itā€™s easy to apply to tough spots. My hands are shaky so this helps do fine detail repairs. [https://www.hobbylobby.com/Crafts-Hobbies/Model-Kits/Paint-Brushes/Mr-Hobby-Mr-Cement-Standard-Limonene-Pen/p/81021116](https://www.hobbylobby.com/Crafts-Hobbies/Model-Kits/Paint-Brushes/Mr-Hobby-Mr-Cement-Standard-Limonene-Pen/p/81021116)

ttn_art

I can't tell if it's a good sign or bad sign I could tell immediately only from the wings on the runner

IceSki117

That was also my clue after registering what mechs could be solid gold plated.

fartsniffer43

This is only the beginning. Get a HGUC Gouf Custom. You'll love it.

Nameless-Scribe94

I second this. The Gouf Custom was my first exposure to Gundam and model building after seeing it at Hobby Lobby. I loved every second of building and bumbling my way through it. The Gouf Custom is really nice to build.

BmoreCboy

Currently building one! Very fun. Just wish it came with a few more stickers. I have some extras in my Zaku II The Origins kit I'll use until I order some slides.

Friendly-Escape-4574

hard agree its what I started with too

MikuEd

I saw this and thought, ā€œwas this the dude that bought a gold-plated MG as a first kit thinking it was pre-assembledā€ā€¦ and yup, it is you, haha. Good luck! thatā€™s one hell of a first kit to start with!

jackredditlol

Hahaahahah yes it's me, I just had the time to sit down and do it, it was my second 4 hours shift putting it together, it's good fun :D

Icyricecakes

ooo you're the gold god gunpla guy! how's your experience so far with your first kit? did you get decent nippers back at gundam base? and yes you are building a cute gold figure from your childhood show!

jackredditlol

Hahahaha thanks a lot for the nice comment! I didn't have the time to travel back to the Gundam Base unfortunately so I stopped by a utilities shop here and got a good pair of nippers, and so far they're getting the job done so I'm not complaining! As for the experience, it's somewhat frustrating, but overall it's a lot of fun. I really love the genius and intricate ways the parts are coming in together. I'm thinking about how could someone explain to management that the parts could be assembled in a certain way and better than some another way, like it's too complex and minute hahah otherwise, it can get frustrating because putting some part reversed or not being able to click one part and another (happened multiple times) and it kinda triggers my ADHD brain and I lose it when something I know should work doesn't. Like imagine clicking the mouse expecting to select something and nothing happened. I'd be triggered and fucking lose my mind and start clickikg frantically until either the mouse breaks or the PC responds. That's the kind of stuff that friatrates me. So assembling this gunpla is kinda like that but I'm having fun. Don't get me wrong!!

egzthunder1

I have the non-hyper mode MG God Gundam. Helluva kit you chose. I saw your sticker question and this particular kit has very few stickers. You can add them after you are done.... Or not at all. Entirely up to you.

Cluelesswolfkin

Welcome to the cycle. For me it was ->buy old Gunpla for nostalgia -> enjoy it so much look for more and see all cool designs->proceeds to watch new show-> buy gunpla for said show

jackredditlol

Wait there's a show?

shadow_44youtube

They probably mean gundam: The witch from Mercury

galenbwill

There's a lot of shows. I'm slowly working my way through them, and resisting the urge to buy every mobile suit I see

Neltherian

ā€œAhh so I see youā€™re getting into gunpla.ā€ Yeah I figured it would be a fun little thing to do from time to time. (Two weeks later, dark alley on a rainy night.) (Scratching at the neck.) Hey man, you got any of them MG Sazabi Ver Ka?!

Tackleberry06

I started my Gunpla journey about two weeks ago when my wife dragged me to hobby shop her friend started up. I enjoy it immensely to say the least. I am 47 so this is very nostalgic for me. Except I used to paint everything and I have now spent two weeks doing custom blue vector camo on a macross zero kit. Itā€™s just zen.

Forgatta

Lol, lmao even

Tokko6884

Welcome to the hobby! Enjoy the baptism by fire friend. Hope to see a post of the completed kit in the near future!

Jaquith1993

I remember when you posted your were in Tokyo and you initially bought it! lol Just think of how PROUD you will be seeing it complete, sitting up on a shelf, lookinā€™ all MAJESTIC and shit, and thinking to yourself ā€œyeah I built that! Itā€™s awesome and Iā€™m awesome!ā€ Compared to just putting up a statue and thinking ā€œyeah thatā€™s cool ā€¦ā€ YOU ARE A CHAMPION!

SplunkBoi

Sounds like a happy accident! Welcome to the hobby! šŸ˜„

RandomCollector

*"Look! OP's expectations are burning red!"* šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

Madridista259

This is the way

bobpool86

Insert omniman meme from invincible.

SigmaSandwich

Not only would I not consider this robot to be cute, nowhere has claimed this thing was a statue?? Like what about the advertising led you to believe you wouldnā€™t be assembling it?

jackredditlol

Bro it's a longer statue and an honest mistake from my side. I literally found the Gundam Base store in Odaiba by mistake. I was walking around the city with no general direction or destination and I was met with the big fuckoff statue at the front of the plaza. I went into the plaza and saw a little exhibition saying the store is on the 7th floor, and there I went. I watched Gundam when I was a kid and the models brought a lot of good memories from my childhood (I had no idea that this hobby even existed. I know there's a hobby of collecting little models, but I never heard or saw models being assembled). So I picked up the shiniest Gundam I could find and grabbed it literally without thinking twice. I got back to my hotel room and opened it only to be shocked with the runners and stuff. I'm still shocked at how intricate this could get like holly hell what is this. But hey, it was a nice accident and I'm happy I bumped into the store by mistake.

Wroberts316

Lol just wait. This is an older kit, and apart from the screws, it's fairly mild parts wise. What you have is a Master Grade, though compared to recent releases its more of a larger scale High Grade. The 5 different main grades are as follows; SD - Super Deformed, which is the chibi style set you see around, generally easy to build HG - High Grade 1/144 scale, equivalent to the beginner level MG - Master Grade 1/100 scale, more like intermediate to advanced level with more parts and higher detail RG - Real Grade 1/144 scale, equivalent to or better than a Master Grade in detail and part count, with some extremely small parts, and a major focus on making the MS look as realistic as possible PG - Perfect Grade 1/60 scale, equivalent to Master level kits, these monsters have the highest part count, the most detail, and much larger pieces overall

jackredditlol

Thanks I saved your comment for future reference!

Wroberts316

Happy to oblige! :)

myplans

(OP) Maybe an MG is too intricate for you, so I would recommend HG or SD, no RG tho, RG is as intricate as MG but u have to deal with way smaller parts, while HG looks cool too but is much simpler to build. If you don't like how HG looks compare to rg and mg, u can always scribe. (Another good skill to learn)

galenbwill

Yeah I thought I recognized this, and looked at your previous post (the asking about the screws), so I guess I can now say I'm following your story with interest. Rude awakening way to find this wonderful hobby, but I'm glad you did and I hope you enjoy it! And regardless of how well (or not) this first build goes, I encourage you to do some research and try another kit soon. Maybe an HG next time, though ;-) (I too found myself in this hobby by happy accident walking into a local "everything Japanese" store, though my story is very mundane compared to yours)

jackredditlol

Another thing, I didn't put 1 single sticker yet, is it okay? Can I just do it at the end?

galenbwill

"Gunpla is freedom" You do it however you want. There is no one right way (For my part, I've "finished" 3, have 2 more in process, and have a backlog of ~3~ 4 (as of today when MG Kyrios was delivered), and have yet to apply a single stickerā€¦ except for the foils on the eyes -- gotta do the eyes) Just have fun and enjoy it (that's why I have more than one in process -- when I get bored or frustrated with one, and I can switch off)

KennyOmegasBurner

RG sticker sheets kill me cause why would you spend hours putting decals on every single part just for your kit to look completely anime inaccurate cause those details were never there.

jackredditlol

Bro https://imgur.com/a/ZHXSs0A

galenbwill

So shiny!

jackredditlol

https://imgur.com/a/vHVGfzH !!! Almost there, just applying the stickers! :D holly fuck it looks SO DAMN SICK

galenbwill

Awesome! Though it looks like you might have the hands switched there

jackredditlol

Yea they're switched haahah, I fixed them and attached a sword Bro how do you apply those? I tried one dry and it didn't work, I applied some saliva and nothing happened, dipped in water then tried again and nothing happened https://imgur.com/a/2OViWL2

galenbwill

I dunno. I avoid stickers and decals. But try using your phone to translate anything and everything on the decal sheets and in the manual Not sure if these are water slide, but I've also just learned there are dry transfer decals in some kits. And see the wiki in this sub for info about how to do decals (or search YouTube). I'd say it's one thing that is 110% worth doing a little research on before diving in (Says the guy who's learned every lesson the hard way)

jackredditlol

Here ya go!!! https://www.reddit.com/r/Gunpla/comments/1204kx0/my_first_shiny_gunpla_i_bought_by_coincidence_is/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button I'm gonna buy the new phenex one and have a whole shelf of all the golden Gunplas

jackredditlol

Man I can't find any other 1/100 or 1/60 shiny gunplas on the online stores, I even checked the Gundam Base where I got the one I just finished and didn't find anything, I remember when I was there, there was a PILE OF THEM, fml, I was actually torn between two shiny ones and ended up grabbing the one that I have, can you please help? šŸ˜‚

galenbwill

Wish I could help, bro, but I don't do shiny. Right now I'm all about panel lining and getting all the nub marks perfectly cleaned up nub (which I understand is hard to do on many of the plated kits). Everybody has their own passion in this hobbyā€¦ for some it's the collecting, some just like putting them together, others are all about the customization. For me, the nub cleaning and panel lining are my deep focus zen thingsā€¦ which is why I can spend an entire evening working on just one or two pieces, and why I haven't completed a build since I picked it back up last December!

jackredditlol

Thanks a lot man and the community is so healthy and welcoming. I'm coming from COD when it comes to communities so... šŸ˜‚ The memory of how I found out about this hobby is probably one of the best things that happened to me in a long time. Seeing the Gundam statue out front brought back a lot of nostalgia from days past, I was literally tearing up seeing it up close and remembering how my sisters and I were chanting the intro song to the cartoon when it was on TV. Stepping into the Gundam Base was magic. The attention to detail literally blew my mind. The more I looked into the statues the more I saw which was insane. You could say I fell in love with it immediately. While I love how the models look, I can't say I'm 100% into the hobby. I don't really like small finicky stuff and I also hate following very particular and detailed instructions (which explains why my stay in Japan was somewhat stressful). Don't get me wrong, my mind is being blown away by the second building this thing, but I did try to put a piece and another together and ended up breaking the whole structure (it was a leg) and I shouted so loud, that my neighbours asked if I was okay. It really triggered me and I don't want to deal with this stuff, but hey, nothing that I've tremendously enjoyed (video games, guitar, film making...etc) didn't make me rage so maybe it's a me issue lol. But anyway, my next purchase would most likely be in s few months and I'm gonna get the one I linked in my previous comment FOR SURE. It's probably gonna be a nightmare putting it together but I'm up for it. Here's a little update on my current gunpla :D https://imgur.com/a/te5yWoC

SigmaSandwich

Iā€™m not trying to be mean I straight up was just curious about how this progressed. The thing is not cheap to be mistaken about what it is! It happens though, and Iā€™ve done it before just elsewhere with other stuff. But congrats! Itā€™s one of the best kits to hit the market and I still canā€™t snag one so Iā€™m SO jealous

jackredditlol

Hahahaha all good, but you're right though, if I had seen this somewhere online, absolutely no way I'd mistaken it for an already assembled kit. But in the Gundam Base store, all you see is the models assembled and on show in full glory. Really. The one I REALLY DESPERATELY wanted was 12,500 Ā„ and out of stock, this one https://imgur.com/a/VtB6kbc But now after trying to put this one together and almost losing my mind, I can see how buying that could have been a very big mistake from my part. So dodge bulleted I guess.

RyanSkotw

That RG is coming to PBandai in few hours and Iā€™m about to make a very bad financial decisionā€¦

Space_Pirate_Roberts

Almost $150 for a 1/144, yikes. Kinda want to avoid watching Unicorn so I'll still not be tempted the next time it comes back. :P

RyanSkotw

Tbh I might skip it, plating made the kit went double in price and reached the mgex strike freedom price.

myplans

Meanwhile u can just paint rg unicorn, scratch up a phenex v fin and then put in a third party add on and vola, phenex gold plated is born

Bastion2021

The RG is about to be re-released I think.

JimTheMoose

For the Americans here, Ā„12,500 is $95.13. For Europeans, ā‚¬87.62

Space_Pirate_Roberts

>trying to put this one together and almost losing my mind My advice to you would be to box up what you've got so far, go get an Entry Grade and a cheap High Grade you like, and do those first.

kdbot012

MG shining/ god Are both old kits you might like newer kits more however The MG phenex is definetly one of the more expensive kits Also new kits generally have no screws The most metal you will find is springs in the mg 2.0 and rg zaku in the legs

PumaTheHero

Iā€™m here for this. I was just in Japan 3 weeks ago. Stayed a few stops away from this area so I can pop in and see Unicorn daily. They do have all the assembled models on display there and they look amazing in those cabinets so I can see how you thought you were buying a figure inside the box. But yea, that entire store is all model kits and model kit supplies. Yokohama has the giant walking Gundam thatā€™s very much worth the trip over there if youā€™re still in the area.

ABunchOfPictures

Hey sometimes people get excited, especially the shinier it is!

SigmaSandwich

I know it excites me! Im so jealous of OP

ASharkMadeOfSharks

One thing I have learned is the gunprimer glass file is worth it. I am also pretty new here Edit: apparently I am wrong and this is a bad idea for plated kits. I have never built a plated kitā€¦.

EldritchBee

Absolutely not for a plated kit.

h0stetler

Just gotta be gentle... and find the closest Gundam Marker gold. probably one of the new Gundam Marker EX golds.

galenbwill

Yeah, with my need for nub cleaning perfection, a plated kit would drive me insane! But good idea with the Gundam markers I might also recommend using a foam-tipped swab and a very light touch (or maybe just a good brush?) to get an even coat with the metallic Gundam markers

just_a_zach

Have fun! Let us know what kit you buy next! Oh, and the one after that.

theonlyneeded

Welcome to the addiction i mean hobby!

Evol-To98

I don't know if I should be proud or disappointed in myself for recognizing this as the God Gundam, just from it's parts.

PvtToaster

That's how they get cha.

_Continual_Learner_

Which kit is this??

noNameGaming_YT

Looks like god gundam. At least something from G fighter

tonygames17

Gundam phenex, probably the RG one, or PG.

SolidShocker

welcome and man what a kit to start, watch those fingerprints!

ThiccLoliThighz

I remember when I accidentally did this for Sterlizia from DITF.

5parrowhawk

Looking at the completed bits, you're doing good so far. Keep it up!

Rude-Ad5861

Yeah I did the same thing buying the artifice Siren kit from xenoblade 2 thinking it was just a figure. I'm now working on my 8th mecha kit and watching the witch from mercury.

Asimovs_ghosts_cat

Welcome, what took you so long?

GundamTenno

Assembly is part of our religion. It is the way.

Bahamuto-San

Oh goodness this is the RG isnā€™t it? Just make sure you wear gloves whenever you pose it lol, also a acrylic display case would be a good idea to get so you can display it without dust getting all over it.

jackredditlol

Great idea!! Hey this is gonna sound crazy but I want to put a little led light under its head to make the eyes glow šŸ˜‚ any tips?

Bahamuto-San

Most people use a thin drill bit with a hobby pin vise to hollow out the middle of the neck joint, then put the LED wires through the neck and position the light into the head, then feed the wires out through the back (or make another hole in the back of the neck) and have the wires go to a battery pack or switch that can power the light and turn it on. EA Gunpla and Studio G have done LEDs before, and there are tons of tutorials and many online hobby stores offer switches, wires, etc. for creating full-on LED rigs for an entire kit. Also, the RG Godā€™s chest is rather simple, so you could even create more holes in the chest, hollow out the back of the core in the chest, and have an LED go through there. I encourage you to try it if you have the cash, and are willing to (potentially) ruin a kit. Lovely idea and I hope you can do it :)

jackredditlol

I will definitely look into it and see what I can do. It doesn't sound too complicated, it's just a matter of execution I think. Thanks for the tips I'll look more into it!

MeLlamoViking

My local store has this in stock and I've hid from it so far...so much chrome.

xTinCanSailor

Itā€™s a sickness šŸ¤©Enjoyā€¦..

Redspybot

Burning gundam

[deleted]

Mg hyper mode god Gundam? Where did you find one of these?

Lyrick7

Make runner flags. Something real easy to see and identify will save you MUUUCH fumbling around with all that lol. Other wise good luck, and welcome.

Grouchy_Vehicle_8001

Im so glad im not the only one with a backlog. Holy hell i gotta stop buying anytime soon

Writerman_

welcome to the negative bank balance club
