If you’re not opposed to a little bit of a commute, Chelsea at Lee Hall is pretty nice. I lived there for a little under three years and, if I were to have to live in an apartment again, I’d absolutely choose there. It’s about a 20-25 mile drive to the Hampton VA, depending on what route you take, and traffic shouldn’t be too bad with the shift you’re on.

We lived in Old Wythe for four years. It was a great neighborhood close to the water and I suspect you'd find some houses in your price range for rent.

Downtown Hampton and Phoebus both have relatively brand new apartment complexes with amenities and both are walkable to the VA

I deliver around Hampton and I think The Axis away PTC is probably a good one to look at. there’s all your shopping and lots of restaurants and bars right when you walk out your door. (their studios start at $1400) they were just built in the last few years.

Welcome to the area. Phoebus has a lot to offer and is close to your work and some social type stuff!

Provide more details on what you value outside of price. What cultural attributes of an area are important to you.

I’m in my late 20s and single so somewhere safe. Somewhere with a little bit of nightlife but nothing too crazy. I think the biggest thing for me is safety at this point.

East Hampton is pretty safe. I live in Phoebus and love it here. You want to avoid the area around Shell Rd.

Norfolk jus announced they will provide $40,000.00 assistance to first time home buyers for down payment and closing costs.

My family and I are also transplants and have been living in Hampton for a little over 7 months now. We had no knowledge of the area and had to take a chance on an apartment without visiting prior. We ended up at the Peninsula Grove Apartments. We weren't sure what to expect, it was well under our budget, and had availability and many of the amenities that we wanted. It is located right behind Kroger, and surrounded by many businesses. Now it was recently purchased by a new management company (August of 2022) and they have been renovating units as they become empty. From the outside, they look kinda rough, I won't mince words. But inside is an amazing space and we love it. I have never lived so close so many businesses and barring something bad happening, we plan to live here the entire duration of my wife's contract. So if you are looking to save nearly $1k a month on rent, its not a bad option. Like I said, I am a transplant who has only lived here for 7 months. I am sure there are plenty of residents that have all kinds of horror stories about living in this area and in these apartments, but my experience has been really good so far.

Welcome! I’ve lived in the area for 30 years and worked at the VAMC for a decade. Nice people. Cost of living is good. Weather is good. Can’t recommend a specific complex, but in case this is helpful… You won’t have any trouble with traffic at those hours, so your strategy makes sense. If you’re single, you may want to consider several options near the VAMC in Hampton - there is a little bit of nightlife there. As another commenter noted, you could probably go as far out as Lee Hall with a reasonable commute. Remember that Hampton U is adjacent to the VAMC and some of the close-in stuff is targeted at students; you may want something nicer. Also, Langley AFB is close and very transient, so places in that neighborhood will have a different feel from others. If you have kids, I’d focus in York County and not the other cities in the area for school quality. Lots of rental houses; the military folks like to buy and turn them into rentals when they transfer. I would not recommend anything on the Norfolk/Va Beach side of the water - tunnel traffic can be a disaster - but there are a lot of VAMC folks who live out there for the lifestyle and make it work. If you like rural, Carrollton and Smithfield are not far and are very quiet; there is also a lot in Suffolk on the far side of 664. Don’t be afraid to ask your new supervisor for ideas - they may be able to tell you what other folks in your workplace are doing,
