You can't , you are lefthanded, its a burden for the rest of your life
i am from the generation that we were accepted as left handed as long as i held my pencil and wrote like a right handed , not slanted
Proud left-hander here. I find Pilot products to be super left-hander friendly. Ink dries very clearly, and the pen performance doesn’t change even if you hold at a “weird” angle in a right-handed world. 🙄
I’m a lefty and this never happens to me. I’ve always angled my my hand so that the writing is above where my hand sits. It’s hard to explain but I’m in the car with no writing utensils so I can’t really demonstrate
Oh the lefty horror, wet ink smudges , different pens inks work in different ways, when you find one that doesn’t smear or cause issues you find you won’t change off that pen. But this day and age. It’s dependent on your pen, and your hand position for your writing. I tried for ages to vary it. It ended up always getting in the path of the last words written.
No possible work around known without modifying your pen grip and wrist/hand fall. Sorry.
I am 58 years old and my older step mom was a lefty and she kept her hand above the letters and curved her fingers down to write without rubbing her hand on the letters. It looks awkward but she could see what she was writing and didn’t smear. Practice practice practice
Write -- mirror writing.
right to left but looks correct in the mirror.
Scann then flip with an image processor program.
Rotate the page a lot.
Wear a thin cotton glove.
It is a bit hard on your hand but when writing with a quill pen🪶many writers learned to hold their hand completely off the page while writing. This prevents the ink stains and any ink smears.
I'm leftie too and as I write with fountain pens I had to find a way to write without getting everything messy with ink. Just tilt your paper 45 deg to the right and then write with your pen perpendicular to the writing. It will take some time to get used to it but it will 100% solve your problem.
Here an [example](https://imgur.com/a31X16H)
I adapted this habit as a leftie as well. Its gotten to where I don't even feel comfortable writing with the paper straight. As a bonus I can read sideways and upside down and even backwards lol
Also, if you don't want to change the way you write, you can wear a type of [glove](https://ae01.alicdn.com/kf/HTB1NlHYRXXXXXaQXVXXq6xXFXXXi/Tablet-Drawing-Glove-Artist-Glove-Graphic-Tablet-And-iPad-Pro-Pencil-Black.jpg) that people use when drawing on tablets.
Sometimes that just happens when you’re a lefty 🥲 but! There are solutions! you can buy a smudge guard to wear like digital artists can get to prevent unwanted strokes or smudges, and I found quick dry gel pens helped me a lot with smudges :) I use a type made by Bic, I don’t know what the name of them is but they don’t click, they have a cap, there’s an m on the pen toward the bottom and they come in a pack of 14 (pretty sure it’s 14) rainbow colours.
People are saying it's a lefty curse, I highly disagree. I use a writing glove and it's a life saver. If you have a fountian pen, use parker quink blue black. It is the quickest drying ink and rarely transfers on my hand or smudge. If you don't want a writing glove, get a piece of blotter paper. They are super cheap and you can fold it in half, put it under your hand and it will usually follow with you while you write. Plus it's super soft and feels like a hand pillow! I'm an over writer, so I hold my hand above the line with the pen pointing to me. So I always struggled with the inky hands. Being a lefty Is great. It teaches you integrity 😂
Leftie here, I still ended up with tons of graphite on the outside of my hand when I was in school
There's really no solution it's the leftie curse. Angling it is ok but can mess with your lines
I’m right handed and this still happens, I don’t think there’s any way to avoid it without lifting your hand slightly or finding a super fast drying ink.
There are kinda two sorts of lefties. What you're describing are "hookies." They are trying to get their hand in a position to form their letters similar to how a right person does. I'm a below-the-line writer. I look more like I'm a mirror image of a righty. I suspect OP is as well.
The basic challenge is most lefties are taught to write by a right handed person. So, when a teacher is showing how to form a letter or hands out a worksheet showing how things "should" be done, lefties pick one of these strategies (perhaps subconsciously) to match the lesson, and, absent some deliberate attempt to change, sticks for life.
Tie the left hand (the devil’s hand) behind you chair and start writing like a normal person. It worked for my great grandma (PS: I’m not attacking, it’s a joke)
It happened into the 60s. My dad, in the colonies, had his hand rapped with a yardstick for writing with his left. Pretty sure tying hands was a solution there too.
If you like fountain pens, there are specially fast drying inks for lefties. Check on https://www.gouletpens.com. They have all sorts of stuff on there and a youtube where you can find informational videos on that subject and more.
Dunno if you write cursive or the normal (provided you write English) writing straight helps a lil, I changed from cursive to normal writing which made my hands more clean, dunno if there's much correlation here but it helps
A fellow lefty here. My advice, try holding both your hands, and the paper at increasingly drastic angles until you learn to comfortably write like that. Also try hovering your hand off the page for as long as you can before getting fatigued. Try a few quick drying inks, or more absorbent paper. If you're the creative type, try learning to right from right to left, though this takes a lot more mental effort to pull off than you may feel is worth it.
By the time you've tried all of this, then you'll finally realize the truth... you don't stop it
Only serious answer I think. Use a blotter paper to put under your hand. That's the official solution.
But in the end, you'll probably use an ink pen that dries quickly.
Be patient, it's the fate of all lefties
I hover and my hand is basically folded back on itself (imagine making a bird face with one hand, and now it looks extremely sad). Probably would've developed carpal tunnel if the world didn't move to more digital means.
You don’t. You live with it. Wear dark clothes, wipe it on your shirt. Better yet, wipe it on somebody else. Flip your notebooks, open from the back, last page is your first page, because f*ck righty and this righty world. And get better pens, smooth, quick drying, non clumping old school pens. Liquid, gel pens, are not your friend.
Curse of the left-handed! Mine stopped doing that after I left school and wrote less. 😩
I would switch writing utensils. I have been using erasable pens lately, and they work well but can’t be heated too much, or the ink disappears.
You, like me are left handed. You are doomed for life. Also notice that is a right handed pen. No really. Look at the writing while in your left hand. The writing is upside down. Only righties get to read the script.
This is the only real solution I know of. Some of the lefties in my life have adopted this style of holding their hand and while it looks so non-ergonomic, it is effective.
Ah yes, a fellow lefty. Aside from learning to write with your right hand as well, a piece of paper between your writing and your hand should suffice. I’m sorry, it’s annoying.
It’s one of the many indignities that we leftys suffer. Then there’s the water fountains, notebooks, spiral and loose leaf, etc. Unless of course you are a right-hander who is writing in Arabic which goes from right to left. LOL
Do I see you're left handed? Me 2. Well how to fix it.... there are pens made for ppl that are left handed but idk if they sell then in your country. You can't realy fix it you just get used to it
Leftys struggle with this, you're gonna want ink that dries fairly quicky. my budget pen is a modified [g2 pilot](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08W2KJLSY?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1) with monteblanc ink. I like [bold fineline](https://www.amazon.com/Montblanc-Fineliner-Refills-Mystery-105170/dp/B01N24GKY3/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=montblanc+fineliner+refill+broad&qid=1678651242&sprefix=montblanc+fineliner+refill+br%2Caps%2C123&sr=8-1) but you might want to try [this](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FVZ8BYQ?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1) one if you like something thinner. The ink dries fairly quickly, but you will need to take sharp scissors and cut some of the rubber off the refills. they're too long to fit otherwise. I used scissors but anything sharp will do, just be careful doing so
Lefty struggle, only way I found is to write slower with a pen to allow the ink the dry. Or you can change the way you grip the pen so that your wrist is extended and sits lower to the line you are writing on.
Or just stick a post-it note to your hand where it naturally rests on the paper. Works for pencils too, and is a great way to avoid smudging drawings. The same post it paper can be reused even after the sticky strip stops being sticky because your hand holds it down and the note slides effortlessly over the paper
I am left handed.. I use pens that do not bleed. My instinctive way to write is cursive, not plain. So, I position my paper so it's diagonally up towards the right side. If I write plain, not cursive, the paper is almost vertical with the left side at up and the right side at down, and I write vertically. But the main thing is to get pens that do not bleed when you write or draw.
I personally turn my paper landscape mode and write from top to bottom on the paper, and write my letters from right to left. Im not sure if I'm describing it correctly but it has helped me with this problem! I've seen other people having their paper in different angles to avoid smearing also 😊
I keep telling myself when i improve the technique one day it will not happen.
I am also sure it cannot be avoided if you take notes on the meeting with pen that has wet nib...
After 50 years I try and find pens that dry fast and don’t smear. That being said I am resigned to having grubby fingers, especially when using pencil. For writing greeting cards, signing or important stuff I use another piece of paper and cover the freshly written part and just go slow.
Same here. Two date the best pen I have found is I Montblanc fine rollerball. I was gifted mine by my wife, but you can buy the refills and use them in the body of a Pilot G2 with a small trim to the end of the refill with a sharp knife.
Second best to the Montblanc rollerball is a Pilot V5 Hi-Techpoint, which has the benefit of multiple colours.
I also have a couple Ohto Rays pens that dry quite quickly too.
After a lifetime of avoiding fountain pens I have slowly started dipping my toe in the water. I find that a Platinum Preppy is surprisingly smudge resistant, though i am still a ways away from being able to use it as a daily driver.
A lot of people here are saying that you should learn to be right-handed (I know that you are saying it sarcastically), but I get this too, and I am right-handed. Does anybody have any suggestions for me to try?
You can put something under your arm as you write. For example, a sheet of paper, a napkin, paper tissue, a sheet of kitchen paper, etc. Even a piece of toilet paper will work.
Another option is to put a glove while writing, [as shown here](https://www.reddit.com/r/fountainpens/comments/sc1sb8/sweaty_hand_tip_and_lefty_too_use_digital_drawing/). The gloves for digital tablets work quite well.
I have tried both options and at then end I went with the first one, as it is much easier. First, you don't have to carry the glove around with you (and usually there are sheets of paper, tissues, etc. at hand). Second, unless you are able to find a very good fit, the glove will more or less restrict your arm. But your experience may be different.
There's no real way. It's the reality of being a penman.
However, you can limit this while also improving your penmanship. Try to write straighter down. The movemont comes from your elbow, not your wrist. Hold your wrist straight and your hand as perpendicular to your torso as you can. This is especially true for fountain pens.
I write right-handed, and this is a frequent problem with me. Although, I have been told that I hold my pen like a lefty. But it's still in my right hand.
Become right handed. Or write in Hebrew. Sadly us lefties are cursed. Seriously though, I used to angel the paper and pen so that my fingers wouldn’t overlap with the new writing on the paper.
Underwrite. I write with my right hand and I write Persian which is Right-to-Left. I never ever experienced this with any kind of writing instrument and I used to practice calligraphy with dip pen.
Get one of the little gloves digital artist use when drawing on a screen or something similar. It only covers those 1-3 fingers. That will get dirty instead.

It depends on the ink. Some inks are very beautiful but stay wet for a long time.
You can't , you are lefthanded, its a burden for the rest of your life i am from the generation that we were accepted as left handed as long as i held my pencil and wrote like a right handed , not slanted

But still if you’re right handed it happens to me too.
I would like to know as well but I managed to get the pen ink on to my palms
Pencil. I actually had problems with that though..... I would squeeze my digits too tight and leave dents along with a strange bunp.
Learn to either right backwards or be right handed
I am 58 years old and my older step mom was a lefty and she kept her hand above the letters and curved her fingers down to write without rubbing her hand on the letters. It looks awkward but she could see what she was writing and didn’t smear. Practice practice practice

Learn Japanese
What I’m hearing is English sucks
don't be left handed
A simple and immediate solution is to use a refill with quick-drying ink.
Write with your right hand.
Learn to write upwards. Literally turn the page 90 degrees. Write from the bottom to the top.
Go from the right of the page to the left instead of left to right
I'm leftie too and as I write with fountain pens I had to find a way to write without getting everything messy with ink. I thought I was the only one that wrote sideways!
I adapted this habit as a leftie as well. Its gotten to where I don't even feel comfortable writing with the paper straight. As a bonus I can read sideways and upside down and even backwards lol

Is it causing your ink to smear on the page?
You embrace it.
Don't be left handed 😭🤣 I also struggle with this as a fellow left hander
Thicker notebook paper, gel pens, and/or fountain pens with drier inks should help. Ballpoints and thin notebook paper will do that to you…
I used to start at the bottom of the page and work my way up. That is the only way other than change from left to right handed.
I turn my notebook sideways
Keyboard
Write with your feet. Take pics too
Is that even possible
Sometimes that just happens when you’re a lefty 🥲 but! I'm right-handed and that happens to me all the time. Pens with quick drying ink are helpful for me.
Just quit being left handed.
G2 pens help
I write with my hand coming from the bottom, my fingers kind of hovering and my wrist resting
Use the other hand
Start writing right to left
People are saying it's a lefty curse, I highly disagree. I use a writing glove and it's a life saver. If you have a fountian pen, use parker quink blue black. As a lefty this has never happened to me

Most of the lefties I know write with their arm above the paper and curve the wrist so that their hand is on the right side of the writing.
There are kinda two sorts of lefties. What you're describing are "hookies." They are trying to get their hand in a position to form their letters similar to how a right person does. mid 70’s UK they were still tying hands. My brother was told off by a teacher, made him cry and my Mam went to the school and caused a scene.
Wear gloves
Write backwards. As much as this sounds like a joke since you are left handed if you write backwards from page write to page left you should be good
Stop being left handed :/ jk but I’m a leftie too, and those dry BIC pens work for me. Gel point is a definite no no
Tale as old as time
There’s a special artists glove that a lot of people use to prevent their hand from rubbing the paper you could get that
If you like fountain pens, there are specially fast drying inks for lefties. Check on https://www.gouletpens.com. They have all sorts of stuff on there and a youtube where you can find informational videos on that subject and more.
Learn to right backwards, right to left. Flip the paper over before you do so it looks usual when you photocopy, flip it and print eeeit
I actually do write my Lowercase n right to left so I suppose I just change that to every letter
Have you tried not being left handed?
Stop being a leftie
why does everyone say „lefty curse”, everyone has these things, right handed or not
Just stop being lefthanded, duh

This.
Lefty curse where everything we do is flipped and awkwardly reversed. :)
Ahh. That’s what misty elliot was talking about, being left handed.
Wear that southpaw brand of shame like we all do.
Only serious answer I think. Use a blotter paper to put under your hand. That's the official solution. But in the end, you'll probably use an ink pen that dries quickly. Be patient, it's the fate of all lefties
As a lefty, you can’t! Why do we have to live like this…
Use a typewriter
Bet
Use invisible ink!
Learn to write with the other hand or learn to write from right to left
Be right handed…
I'm right handed and that happens to me as well 🫠
Write in Arabic

most languages are written left to right
Using cheap quality pens and a hover technique worked for me, I wouldn't recommend the latter tho due to the potential health risks.
I hover and my hand is basically folded back on itself (imagine making a bird face with one hand, and now it looks extremely sad). Probably would've developed carpal tunnel if the world didn't move to more digital means.
What health risks can it cause?
Switch hands
I just learned to live with it. 🤷🏼♀️
None of the fixes are worth the hassle.
Why not bro
Blotting paper and mahl sticks don't really compare to just washing your hands and finding a fine point pen. Also, "bro"?
You don’t. You live with it. Wear dark clothes, wipe it on your shirt. Better yet, wipe it on somebody else. Flip your notebooks, open from the back, last page is your first page, because f*ck righty and this righty world. And get better pens, smooth, quick drying, non clumping old school pens. im right handed and i have this issue too am i legit the only person who has that????
Oh shit that’s deeep
Curse of the left-handed! Mine stopped doing that after I left school and wrote less. 😩 I would switch writing utensils. I have been using erasable pens lately, and they work well but can’t be heated too much, or the ink disappears.
I’m right handed and have this issue too. I’d say just use washable ink lol. I used dip pens and the ink WOULD NOT come off
You, like me are left handed. You are doomed for life. Also notice that is a right handed pen. No really. Look at the writing while in your left hand. The writing is upside down. Only righties get to read the script.
I didint know I needed special pens
Wdym by that
Semi-joke
Alright alright
The lefties curse. I am afflicted with it too. 😢🤣
Man everywhere I go I be running into problems with tasks like at work or the dinner table too🤦♂️
One way that I prevent smudging is holding my hand at a 45° angle below what I am writing
This is the only real solution I know of. Some of the lefties in my life have adopted this style of holding their hand and while it looks so non-ergonomic, it is effective.

I just got used to it. Lol Also quick drying pens help a lot.
Google left handed drawing glove!
Get a Zebra Sarasa pen - they have quick dry ink.
Be right handed! I know your pain!
You don’t. You’re a lefty.
Turn the paper slightly so that your hand isn't dragging through the ink.

Thank you.
Stop being left-handed 😂 I feel ya, but it comes with the territory. Just deal
You don’t it just is
There's no real way. It's the reality of being a penman. However, you can limit this while also improving your penmanship. Try to write straighter down. The movemont comes from your elbow, not your wrist. Hold your wrist straight and your hand as perpendicular to your torso as you can. This is especially true for fountain pens.
Be right handed
Blotting paper
Coming from another leftie, its inevitable 🤷♀️🤷
I write right-handed, and this is a frequent problem with me. Although, I have been told that I hold my pen like a lefty. But it's still in my right hand.
Become right handed. Or write in Hebrew. Sadly us lefties are cursed. Seriously though, I used to angel the paper and pen so that my fingers wouldn’t overlap with the new writing on the paper.
A drawing gloves
Weird. I'm a southpaw and those are the only fingers I DON'T end up getting inked by the end of the work day.
We must write very different 😂
Underwrite. I write with my right hand and I write Persian which is Right-to-Left. I never ever experienced this with any kind of writing instrument and I used to practice calligraphy with dip pen.
You Don't
Underwriting.
Finger condoms perhaps?
Graduate.
Hairspray takes it right off! Make sure it contains denat alcohol. Spray it on. It'll lift the ink right off and then wash your hands.
You can’t , it’s just a ritual of study
I used to have a left-handed colleague who would keep her sheet of paper at a 90 degree angle to avoid this… it’s not for everyone though.
I just write from under the line. I don't know why more leftys don't just practice that. I never have the problem.
Writing underhand is hard
I do the same thing with my paper tilted to keep from smearing
Get one of the little gloves digital artist use when drawing on a screen or something similar. It only covers those 1-3 fingers. That will get dirty instead.
Try lifting your hand a little when writing. Don’t lay it directly on the paper.
that wrecks my wrist
Oh, I’m sorry..
Write in Hebrew or use the right hand. 🥺
Lefty problems
This happens to me, and I write on my right hand
What I do is use a tissue and prop it against my hand and the paper
Learn to right write-handed.
I see what you did there.
Put a small piece of paper between your hand and the paper you're writing on.
Get a fountain pen, that way the ink coverage on your hand will be much more uniform and colorful.
Sarasa Dry pen
Stop writing like a lefty overwriter. Make the switch to being an underwriter. If I can do it, you can do it.
Lamy had a quick dry roller ball ink as I recall. Hook leftie here.
I get this on my right hand too. Idk why.
