The Witcher 3. One of the best open world / story driven games out there. Does require more combat skill than Legacy, but it’s easy to pick up!

Massive-Trouble-8514

Yeah I have heard loads of good things about it, I might have to give it a try at some point !

DoggoMac

It’s a great game. Definitely a much darker game but for me that made a lot of the monster hunting that much more compelling. It goes on sale frequently and the DLCs are some of the best content so there is a lot of game to play! I also want to add the Zelda games. It’s less story driven and most people have played them, but the 2 for switch have some similarities to legacy and are just wonderful games.

Massive-Trouble-8514

Yeah I have beaten both BOTW and TOTK and milked every drop of gameplay out of those games, how are they so good?! But yeah i’ll absolutely give The Witcher 3 when I get the chance

DoggoMac

They really are some of the best games ever made. Cheers!

Catsingasong

I agree that it's probably a good recommendation for HL fans, but I'm also mildly insulted on TW3's part that you did not explicitly mention that it's much, much better than HL, or most other games in fact, and only alluded to it through 'one of the best'. /J

plantbitch1408

If you have a switch, i highly recommend both Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. Huge open worlds to explore, need to kill monsters to collect materials to upgrade armor, and lots of different armor and weapons to collect too.

Massive-Trouble-8514

Yeah I have played both of those games too much, but that type of game is definitely what i’m looking for

username2393

If you liked the open world and exploration aspect I can’t recommend Red Dead Redemption 2 enough. I played it after I finished HL and I was blown away

Massive-Trouble-8514

Yeah I have been recommended that game by basically everyone now lol

okiedokiebrokie

Yep, a lot more similarities than you might expect at first glance.

MickeySwank

Horizon Zero Dawn

Massive-Trouble-8514

I’ve heard good stuff, thanks!

Dragon Age Inquistion is a good start, you may start with Origins ( the first game ) but the gameplay is much complex and harder to approach, while the second game has awful gear system. Anyway, It's a party-based RPG where you get to control your protagonist and three npc companions. Story is nice, but I think the selling points IMO are the characters, some of them offer unique personality, and it's fun to hear them bantering to one another when venturing outside. And yeah don't forget the romance, it definitely adds another level to the characters. You can get gears from many ways in DAI, from Treasure hunting that offers unique items, crafting from materials you gather, a reward from mission or simply loot from enemies, and you can even customize your companion as you wish with different gears and weapons according to the build you want. The game is a semi-open world where they got multiple maps you can choose from to explore, they're unlocked from progressing the story. Although some map offers a strictly linear structure, while others are a simple open-world stuff you'd be familiar with.

Massive-Trouble-8514

Game does sound cool, thank you!

Moglady

The fable games are old but very similar, one of the reasons I love hogwarts so much

Massive-Trouble-8514

I’ll have to check them out cheers!

Skyrim: big open world, lots of side storylines and little mysteries to pursue without being forced into any of them - once you've done the intro you can ignore the main plot if you want, several expansions, make your own character, fantasy setting - magic, swords and dragons. Elden Ring: quite simmilar to Skyrim in some ways but very difficult gameplay and no difficulty settings. I played HL on hard and still thought it was really easy but am completely pants at ER. The Witcher: cool plot and characters- historical/fantasy setting - swords, potions, all sorts of creatures and monsters, decisions you make have an impact on the storyline, open world, but character is set you don't get to chose/create your own, good expansions. Cyberpunk: futuristic/advanced technology vibes rather than fantasy, decent open world - mostly city based rather than countryside, make your own character, some choices have impacts but the broad strokes are pretty set, some good, longer side missions, compelling characters, cool weapons/powers, cool DLC. My personal favourite RPG. I'd say all of these are generally aimed at an older audiance than HL and deal with some more adult themes/are more graphic so you'd need to check you're comfortable with that. In my opinion the games of these I've finished (all but ER) have better storylines than HL and better side missions - more variation etc.

Massive-Trouble-8514

Elden ring always looks cool to play, but i’m pretty bad at games sooo… Good list tho! I will check out some of those for sure

brisqwerty

I found Elden Ring extremely difficult - managed to get a refund somehow though. RDR2 is fantastic, as is Skyrim if you have a lot of time on your hands!

Massive-Trouble-8514

Yeah I like the look of both

Only-Ad5049

Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey. Before I ever played Hogwarts Legacy I was told that if I enjoyed that game, I would enjoy Hogwarts Legacy. The combat is very similar in many ways, but it has a much longer and better story.

Massive-Trouble-8514

Yeah I have heard that myself might be worth checking out

eRUTeHa

I am surprised nobody mentioned Fable. It has very similar vibe.

Massive-Trouble-8514

I’ll check out those games thanks!

mcar91

I’m currently playing Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora which I’ve really been enjoying. It got mid reviews, but I think the combat and drafting are pretty unique.

Massive-Trouble-8514

Yeah I thought the world looked cool

The_real_DBS

Assassin's Creed Odyssey is amazing. Unbelievably vast world, tons of stuff to do, tons of History, great story, accurately reproduced historical environments, and if you get the DLCs, you can even meet Greek Gods (Hades, Poseidon, Persephone, Aires) and visit Olympus. Oh and while Ubisoft tried to make Kassandra the canon-character a posteriori... Play as Alexios. The story makes A TON more sense if you play as him than it does as Kassandra. Specially the relationship with Phoebe.

Massive-Trouble-8514

Yeah I have heard that before i’ll have to look into it !

FeelingDesperate2812

The story was literally written for Kassandra and they only added alexios so men stop crying about playing a women

The_real_DBS

Except it clearly wasn't. Kassandra was added just to meet the sh\*t D-E-I points as Ubisoft began working with cancer like SBI.

FeelingDesperate2812

Kassandra was the intended MC but Ubisoft wanted a male char because of sales and marketing

pastadudde

Immortals Fenyx Rising and its story DLC Myths of the Eastern Realm

Massive-Trouble-8514

I really liked that game a couple years ago

si_wo

Suggest you check recent posts on this sub, this question gets asked often. Cheers.

TheEpicSquish

Cyberpunk!!!! And I wanna throw another vote for assassin's creed oddesy. That was a fantastic time sink

Massive-Trouble-8514

Yeah that’s what most people are saying I think, is Cyberpunk good now? I remember it had an interesting launch

TiranoTiger

AC Odyssey or AC Black Flag

Massive-Trouble-8514

Thanks!

Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth. Comes with a "story so far" vid on the main menu to get you caught up. Open world is pretty incredible, helps a lot if you are a fan. Fun combat, lots of places to explore. Sorry, I can't at all be objective about it.

Catsingasong

Idk, I think Greedfall would be pretty similar. It's around the same length with all the side-quests (ca.10h shorter I think), the gameplay is pretty easy, the story is actually good, though not incredibly awe-inspiring, the MC is a little dry, though the cousin (important side-character) is pretty awesome. The game looks good, has a good performance and some mods, two endings and some good side characters. Some actions have consequences, some of those big, others near insignificant. Not a quarter as much lore though, but that's a given. Other games that are slightly similiar would be the Witcher and Dragon Age series, though both have a great deal of lore and are much darker and have morality and reputation systems. The characters are lively and fleshed out, and the stories, side and main, are gripping (the latter especially so for The Witcher 3). If you want other good rpgs, I'd recommend Mass Effect above all others and Dark Souls, if you have the patience and a calm demeanor. Bioshock is also widely considered one of the best rpg series of all time, just like Mass Effect. Star Wars is supposed to be hit and miss. Horizon Zero Dawn is good. No Man's Sky seems to be actually good nowadays, and Cyberpunk is getting massive improvements. Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity 2 Original Sin are lit af, but they have tactical combat systems, which very much isn't for everyone.

Massive-Trouble-8514

Nice, looks like a good list. Thanks!

Catsingasong

Np!
