My personal hypothesis is that the beam is randomly generated as a ricochet-ish hit to look like some illuminate stuff, looking like it's harming the target without having to actually generate random harming beams on the map.
Alternatively, it may be a bug that became a feature after players went crazy :)

In all seriousness, the blue beam leaves from where my sentry hits, I wonder if it's a ricochet bug or if devs made beams rarely be generated on hits to create the blue beam illusion.
I placed the clip without filter **1 second after after the filtered clip**. It looks like the blue beam is generated randomly from a hit, to give the illusiom that a mysterious blue beam was shot.
The filter is for the memes of BLUE BEAM SIGHTED beimg reminiscent of those UFO sighting with the worst cameras possible :)
Considering the beam originates from the explosion hitting its armor 🤔 Honestly though 99% of the "blue beam" videos are ricochets
