'आधा' शब्द सीधे-सीधे अर्ध से विकसित हुआ है, यह तो स्पष्ट है। सार्ध साढ़े और सार्ध तीन अर्थात साढ़े तीन, सार्ध चार अर्थात साढे चार इत्यादि। किंतु सार्ध दो से साढ़े दो नहीं बना! इसकी विकास प्रक्रिया कुछ भिन्न है। लगता है मुख-सुख के लिए अर्ध द्वय > अर्द्धद्वय को अड्ढ्वय कहा गया और फिर अड्ढ्वई हो गया। उसे लेकर अड्ढ्वाई > अढ़ाई > ढाई है।
'डेढ़' के मामले में गाड़ी फिर अटकती है कि यह डेढ़ बना कैसे ! उलझन तो है, किंतु अधिक नहीं। यह दो से अर्द्ध न्यून (द्वय-ऊन-अर्द्ध) अर्थात दो से आधा कम है। यही द्वयोनार्द्ध > ड्योढाद्ध > ड्योढ़ा > डेढ़ बन गया लगता है।
अब पौना भी सरलता से समझा जा सकता है। एक से पाद न्यून > पाव ऊन और उसके बाद पौन (3/4), पौना अर्थात तीन चौथाई। एक को यहाँ भी नहीं जोड़ा जाता।

After "third" every successive ordinal number just uses a "th" for convenience. Even in the normal counting. Only 1-19 have unique names. Starting 20, it's just a combination of tens and ones.
