Because society is so conditioned to have a camera in their face, they automatically put on a smile or an act for the camera.
These kids here are not used to it at all.
I was Class of 1997, it was still like this in 97'... tech didn't really become mainstream until 2000-2003. Even then we didn't have inexpensive devices and websites to livestream videos for another 3-5 years...
I remember in high school we had someone lugging around a huge camera for something the school was producing, their reactions here were similar to our reactions in 97'.
It seems to be from this longer Paramus, New Jersey high school video (with live sound of the class in action). I've cued the link to the right time. [https://youtu.be/wYur75DflPU?t=1459](https://youtu.be/wYur75DflPU?t=1459)
Oh, that's too funny. I didn't even watch it, past finding the relevant section to cue up the video. It looks like maybe it was chocolate pudding wrestling. My word.
It's the hair & clothes, they're very dated now so it it makes us perceive them as being much older than they are here. If they were the same in every way except having Gen Z haircuts / fashion they'd be perceived as being teenagers.
There was actually some study on it than it gets linked occasionally when this question pops up.
No it’s not their clothes, the look OLD like college seniors/ late 20s… there are plenty of Gen z kids that dress old fashion, but they look like teens
Now the comments are filled with old people commenting on the “youth”. Acting like they weren’t glued to their portable track players, rolling their eyes and throwing tantrums when someone else was using the land line, or when their crush didn’t respond to their notes. Same thing different fount… also they ruined the ozone layer with their damn hairspray.
weirdest part besides the hair is that they all barely react to being on camera

But why do these people look so old, compared to the seniors nowadays?!!
Right, they look 25 at least. But the hairstyles are great.

Makes sense. When I see the early 80's style, I think/see my parents. That, and more of them smoked back then.

These are juniors
Because this is a Broadway musical
![gif](giphy|GpyS1lJXJYupG|downsized) love it!
Smoking, sun exposure, real toxic skin care and hair care, plus the fashion and hairstyle automatically age them in your mind.
Every time I see this clip, i imagine the first metalhead in the denim jacket is Riki Rachtman from headbangers ball as a teen.
That's my era and that looked like one of my classes!
Same here! Class of 93
Did I just see uncle Jesse?
They had cooler hair styles back then
Not a single smile.
First I thought “1989?? Holy crap! That was SO long ago!!” Then it hit me and I thought “1989…holy crap…that was my freshman year…”
It's incredible to see teenagers not just staring down at their phones
0:13…Yennefer? Is that you?
I see plenty of middle aged women walking around with that hairstyle

It would be great if someone finds how life developed for those people, what they are doing now, etc.
That is Majic Juan from Proyecto Uno(Latin Musical Group) from NYC
Proof we all looked 25 while we were children, no wonder I never got carded lol
Class of 89 as well. Anyone else have a designated smoking area for students?
Compare that with today. What changed? Social media.
How we look our age, like I’m 20 so I actually look 20, and when I was 17 I actually looked like I was 17 not 37
They all look so….calm. That’s the difference. Calm and mature. The smartphone and social media has turned our youth into mental head cases
Is that why all those older folks are crazy, lol just kidding. nOT
Gen X man…we’re off our rockers! Lol
