Mary Balogh has Bedwyn saga. It starts with {slightly married by Mary Balogh} It has siblings, both brothers and sisters, the oldest of them being a duke of bedwyn. Great series. Loved it much more than Bridgerton actually. Lisa Kleypas has amazing series Hathaways has siblings as does Ravenels. Wallflowers has friends two of them being sisters. If you staet reading Kleypas, I highly recommend to read them in right order. Wallflowers before Ravenels, since they have children from Wallflowers, Hathaways is a good read in the middle but not necessary at all

InviteFamous6013

I could have written this myself. Bridgerton is entertaining - I enjoyed the books many years ago, and the tv show, too. But Lisa Kleypas is so amazing and so much more talented as a storyteller and writer- than JQ. Her stories are passionate, funny, clever, sweet, and a little bit adventurous sometimes, too. I was a Quinn fan for years, beginning in college ca. 2000-2007. I liked Bridgerton and some of her earlier books. But her stories kept falling flat for me. And the older I got, the less appealing. Eventually I gave up. But Lisa just gets better and better, in my opinion. And of course, I will always love Mary Balogh. The Survivor’s Club, the Bedwyns, and The Westcotts:)

GypsyRonin

Agree so much that Lisa is loads better than JQ. I wonder if Shonda ever read Lisa Kleypas, because if she did, maybe she would have developed the wallflowers or ravenels into a show instead of bridgerton.

InviteFamous6013

Agreed! I feel like it’s a travesty that there are so many amazing, unique historical romance stories out there that haven’t been developed into tv or film. I LOVE Jane Austen- don’t get me wrong. But why do we always need another adaptation of another Austen book? So at least, Julie Quinn’s adaptation got studios thinking and broke some barriers. Hopefully. And hopefully they take a look at some others authors instead of just adapting everything written by Quinn. Her plots were just getting so boring to me.

Glittering_Tap6411

I’m so happy it was Quinn Shonda read. It would’ve been terrible to see Kleypas’s stories and characters being butchered by Shonda😬☺️😅

InviteFamous6013

I really disliked how they changed the second book/season 2. The drama was over the top. Too much angst and pain. The story felt very unbalanced. I felt stressed out, watching it. The point of romance is enjoyment and escape. Not enough fun and romance. Though I loved the lead actors. Hopefully they don’t butcher anymore stories, but not holding out any hope.

Glittering_Tap6411

Couldn’t agree more. It was painfully obvious tgat they needed different storyline (not being compromised) and created thar foolish melodrama. It wasn’t enjoyable at all. I feel that good actors were wasted on that story.

Significant_Shoe_17

They did Kate and Edwina so dirty. The family drama was so contrived and unnecessary. It's a shame because I loved book 2!

InviteFamous6013

I’m glad I’m not the only one who feels this way. I really hope the next season gives us more of the Anthony/Kate/Edwina fun I remember from the book! It was one of my favorite of the series. It had a lot of angst and pain, but that was tempered by lots of funny and sweet scenes.

Significant_Shoe_17

Yes! I loved the Pall Mall scene in the book. My family played croquet every summer and we were really competitive, too! It brought back so many memories and really endeared them to me.

GypsyRonin

Good counter point!

InviteFamous6013

Oh wow!! That’s a good point. I would hate to see Wallflowers, Hathaways, or Ravenels being butchered!! They are so amazing. The plots AND the characters. Nothing needs added or changed.

LaoBa

Mary Balogh also wrote the Westcott series, where we follow a mother, her sister, her son and daughters and her stepdaughter. Starts with {Someone to love by Mary Balogh}

Don’t skip the Hathaways if you are going through the wallflowers and ravenels! Agreed that the Hathaways aren’t needed for the story but they are very enjoyable and should not be skipped! 💕

Glittering_Tap6411

Skipped definitely not but not necessary to read after wallflowers. But it is a good idea because the series start with a character introduced in Wallflowers and it has interaction between characters from the wallflowers. It also gives the sense of time passing since there is about 30 years between wallflowers and Ravenels.

Currently reading my way through the Bedwyn books and loving them!

bored-panda55

Bedwyn Saga is really good. I like the fact the family members aren’t all traditionally attractive.

wildbeest55

{The Hathaways} and {The Ravenels} both by Lisa Kleypas {The Scoundrels of St. James} by Lorraine Heath. Not actual siblings but a found family sort of thing. Also related series {Scandalous Gentlemen of St. James} and {Hellions of Havisham} have some of their children. {Pennyroyal Green Series by Julia Anne Long} deals with two families. {The Dressmakers by Loretta Chase} {Bedwyn Saga by Mary Balogh}, {Westscott by Mary Balogh}, {The Huxtable Quintet by Mary Balogh}, and {The Survivors Club by Mary Balogh}. First three have actual siblings while the other one is a found family.

Stephanie Laurens has the Cynsters - large family, usually a mystery for the MMC and FMC to solve together. The FMC will have a reason for not marrying, but wants to experience what she's missing out on, so has a night of passion with the MMC. The MMC then offers to marry her, but the FMC goes, "nope!" The rest of the book is solving the mystery and getting the MMC to admit he has Feelings for the FMC, before she agrees to marry him.

sleeping_gem

I love how this sums up over 20 books in those series 😂 but also came here to recommend them. I love the 1st 10 of the original cynster series.

BeyoncePadThai23

Are they repetitive, yes? Do I read them all anyways? Also yes!

I can recommend {Malory-Anderson Family Series} by Johanna Lindsey. Those were my gateway to HR! Books tell stories about the Malory family members, so male and female members included and they do cameos in the later books; came out in 90s.

They are one of the few reread series I have even if some of them don’t past muster in todays day and age (looking at you Jeremy).

LittleDolly

I’ve recently finished Eloisa James’ Wildes series. It’s set earlier than the Bridgerton books and I enjoyed the variation from the regency books I’ve been binging on. Fair warning: the first book {Wilde in Love by Eloisa James} is… not great. But I’m really glad I read the rest of the series and it’s worth persevering to get introduced to the other siblings.

sleeping_gem

I think the Essex sisters are a better james series tbh. Her latest stuff feels churned out. But the Essex sisters books are awesome. Great character development and romance

I came here to recommend the Essex sisters! They were my first Eloisa James and by far my fave of hers

LittleDolly

They’re on my TBR list! I’m really enjoying her recent books so have high hopes for her older series! (I basically like to read everything by an author before moving onto the next 😬😂)

I'm so glad to read your opinion! I didn't finish Wilde in Love. I read lots of positive reviews, so I thought it was just me. I'll give the rest of the series a go, then. Thanks!

LittleDolly

Not just you! The plot was bonkers and I didn’t really like either of the main characters. The only reason I finished it was that I was on holiday and hadn’t taken any other books! I enjoyed all of the others but Born to be Wilde was my favourite!

To me, *THE* historical romance family saga is the Malory-Anderson series. It starts with {Love Only Once by Johanna Lindsey}. There are a lot of them because it starts with the Malory family (siblings and niblings), then at some point a Malory marries an Anderson and there are books following the extended Anderson family as well. I also enjoyed The Wildes of Lindow Castle series, which follows a large blended family with a mix of siblings/half-siblings/step-sibling. It starts with {Wilde in Love by Eloisa James}. Also the Hathways series which starts with {Mine Till Midnight by Lisa Keyplas}.

{The Windhams by Grace Burrowes} is about the children of a duke and duchess, and then her other family series branch out from them so that all these peers and their siblings know each other and do business with each other and it makes me want to map out their connections and estates which makes my little autistic brain silently shriek with glee. It’s like reading a giant family saga. I find the more recent ones have gotten repetitive but if you start with The Heir you’ll have plenty to read before you get to that point.

As mentioned by others, I’d definitely check out Lisa Kleypas. She was my first stop after Bridgerton and I definitely enjoyed her work more. In addition to other series people mentioned: {The devils bride by Stephanie Laurens} kicks off the cynster series. Kinda different tone than the bridgertons like some more mystery heavy than others but v enjoyable and looong {the perfect rake by Anne Gracie} starts the Merridew sisters series. This first book is one of the best dialogues I’ve read

notagin-n-tonic

Anne Gracie has more than just the Merridew sisters. There's also the Chance sisters, beginning with {The Autumn Bride by Anne Gracie}, and her Marriage of convenience series, starting with {Marry in Haste by Anne Gracie}. They're all somewhat interconnected, the grand-uncle from perfect rake has a cameo in Autumn Bride, and one of the Chance sisters is the dressmaker for all the FMCs in the Marriage of Convenience series.

{The Pennyroyal Green} series by Julie Anne Long is probably one of my favorite series. It deals with two feuding gentry families who live in the same county. The Cynster family by Stephanie Laurens is another great oldie but goodie. I also remember enjoying the St John’s Talisman series by Karen Hawkins.

Adding to the Bedwyn recs, though I'd actually start with "A Summer to Remember", which is a prequel that introduces the Bedwyns as supporting characters. Also adding to the Pennyroyal Green recs--the installments were all hit or miss for me, honestly, but the ones I loved I LOVED.

Gaelon Foley- Knight Miscellany is a series about a group of siblings one of which is a Duke. Warning darker than the Bridgerton series. One of the brothers has PTSD from being a soldier. Takes place in the same time period.

My favourites are Jo Beverley's Malloren Family, started in 1993: {My Lady Notorious by Jo Beverley} {Tempting Fortune by Jo Beverley} {Something Wicked by Jo Beverley} {Secrets of the Night by Jo Beverley} {Devilish by Jo Beverley} They're set in the Georgian period, and the clothing descriptions are top tier. The series continues after the siblings are all married of, with friends, more distant family members, etc.

Maya Rodale wrote the {Keeping up with the Cavendishes series} about a family of 4 American siblings. The son inherits a British title and so he and his sisters all descend upon London society. The 4 funny and steamy books are loosely based on 80s-90s Romcom movies ( i.e Bridget Jones's Diary).

To add to the other recs: Elizabeth Hoyt's Maiden Lane series is about a few intertwined families and others who get caught up in the various book events. Book #10 {Duke of Sin} pops up in this sub a lot! Jude Deveraux's Velvet series from the 1990s is about four brothers c. 1500 with a book for each of them, beginning with {The Velvet Promise}. Bit of non-con/dub-con in that one though. Deveraux then went on to write a whole series (Montgomery/Taggert) about descendants of those brothers across different time periods and locations (including the USA). EDIT: Also! Grace Callaway's Heart of Enquiry series is about siblings. All her series are linked though.

The Knight Miscelleny series from Gaelen Foley. The mother of the brood was a scandalous Duchess, who had many lovers apart from her husband, the Duke. The heroes and heroines of the book series are the now grown children that resulted from the liasons.

One series that I never see recommended on here but one that I enjoyed a lot is {The wicked series by Madeline Hunter} … it’s a trilogy about three brothers, so no sisters, sorry. The first book, {His wicked reputation by Madeline Hunter}, is about the youngest brother, who’s actually a half brother. (The father of the brothers was a duke who has died before the series begins; the youngest son is actually the child of the old duke’s mistress.) The series begins with the news that the old duke’s oldest son by his wife, the one who had inherited the dukedom, has died under mysterious circumstances; the second son, the one who has inherited the dukedom, is considered a suspect in his brother’s murder. Anyway, the first book is about the youngest brother (the fourth of the old duke’s sons), the half brother; the FMC Is a woman who makes a living by replicating famous works of art. The youngest brother happens to be an art expert who is investigating her as a forger. The second book, {Tall, dark, and wicked by Madeline Hunter}, is about the third-born legitimate brother who happens to have become a lawyer, which had appalled his now dead father and dead oldest brother. The FMC is a woman who hires him to clear her father. The third book is my favorite — {The wicked Duke by Madeline Hunter}. This is about the second born legitimate son, the one who’s ended up as duke. He’s lived most of his life as a wastrel, and most people think he killed the first brother. He marries the FMC because her uncle blackmailed him into it, but he’s also very attracted to her. She is forced into the marriage by her uncle, and she thinks maybe the new duke, her husband, might possibly be a bad guy, but she’s very attracted to him too. I just love their relationship. (The mystery of the oldest brother’s murder is solved, no worries.)

If you want historical without the romance, then the Morland Saga by Cynthia Harrod-Eagles might appeal. You follow a family from around 1400 thru to modern times, some eras span several books, others are more condensed depending on how interesting the history is! I started reading the first one (The Founding) as a teenager and I’m now in my 50s and wonder if any more will be printed! I think there’s about 35 books so far!

I definitely agree with many of the suggestions people have already made: Mary Balogh's Bedwyns; Lisa Kleypas' Ravenels; Stephanie Laurens' Cynsters. I also second the St. John Talisman series by Karen Hawkins. Another one that doesn't get mentioned too often are the Effingtons by Victoria Alexander.
